Your metabolism controls digestion, getting nutrients into the cell and waste products out. You can thank your metabolism for your body’s ability to detoxify itself.

Your diet matters because metabolic processes depend on the foods you eat. These nutrients are broken down to produce energy and critical proteins like DNA. Your body depends on specific nutrients to perform basic functions and if you can’t get them, or for some reason your body can’t use them, then systems begin to break down.

If you struggle with your weight, the difference between you and your friend who seems to be able to eat anything and never gain an ounce is that she has a more optimized metabolism. It’s important to realize weight gain is a sign of a deeper problem – your body’s way of clueing you in that something is wrong. Your body is sending out an SOS that you have a toxic metabolism and your cells aren’t getting the nutrients they need or the cells are toxic – or both.

Having a toxic body is like swimming in a pool that has a plugged filter. Toxic metabolism places great stress on the body from increased toxic burden, disrupted hormone signaling, and increased inflammation, which paves the way for obesity and a number of devastating illnesses.

You can reverse toxic metabolism and melt off those extra pounds so you’ll feel younger, healthier, and more vibrant and alive than you’ve felt in years! The boomerang bulge around your middle will stay away this time, because you’ll remove the cause and create what we all desire and deserve – a Radical Metabolism!

Are Your Cells Rusting?

If you want to boost your cellular energy, gain vitality, and accelerate fat burning, true health requires you to protect yourself at the source – the cell level. There are 3 ways a cell can be damaged: damage to the outer cell membrane (cell wall), damage to the power supply (mitochondria), and damage to the genetic code (DNA). All involve damage to membranes, which are your cell’s first line of defense against protecting the valuables inside.

No disease can be healed if your cell membranes – which direct nutrients in and poisons out – are weak and unstable. Cell membranes undergo damage from environmental toxins in the air and water, and of course from poor diet. If you eat poor quality fats, such as denatured vegetable oils and trans fats, your body actually incorporates them into your cell membranes within minutes of digesting them, which causes those membranes to deteriorate.

Because cell membranes are made of fats, they are susceptible to this damaging process called lipid peroxidation, where free radicals “steal” electrons from the lipids in cell membranes. Cell membrane damage is intimately linked to both insulin resistance and weight loss resistance, as your metabolism depends on proper cell signaling. Think of it as cellular “rust,” where your body is unable to keep up repairs of ongoing damage. Your body responds to this damage with inflammation, and that’s a big deal.

Much Ado About Inflamed Tissues

Cellular inflammation is an enormous problem. When a cell membrane is inflamed, toxins can’t be eliminated and become trapped inside the cell, essentially turning it into a garbage dump, and illness ensues. Inflammation drives cardiovascular disease, cancer, hormone imbalance, diabetes, weight gain, and so many other conditions that are rampant today.

Your cells will only be able to function again when they can purge their accumulated toxins, and for this to happen, their membranes must be healed. If your cells are constructing their membranes from poor quality fats and oils, their ability to transfer oxygen from the bloodstream into the cell is compromised, your mitochondria can’t produce energy, and your cell can’t prevent disease from invading. Typical commercial oils are so overprocessed and overcooked that they resist oxygen, rather than attract it.

When it comes to weight loss, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Breakfast is the meal that “breaks the fast” from our overnight slumber, and skipping it is known to cause a host of bad reactions in the body, from lack of concentration and lower energy to decreased insulin sensitivity and weight gain. Yet, over half of all Americans skip breakfast at least once per week, and nearly one-quarter of us skip breakfast daily. On the surface, the reasons for this appear to stem from our busy lifestyles and hectic morning routines, but in truth, studies show that a shift in our circadian rhythms has caused us to lose our morning hunger.

Your Body’s Internal Clock

Your body has a circadian rhythm, which naturally causes sleep and fasting during darkness, and wakefulness and hunger when it’s light out. Your body’s central “clock” is located in the hypothalamus of your brain, which regulates metabolism and energy balance based on the light/dark cycle, but also takes feedback from when and what you eat and how much you exercise. You also have “clock genes” located in nearly all tissues and organs in your body that synchronize their metabolic activity based on your master clock’s rhythms. This means every tissue in your body, from your liver and gut to your muscles and fat tissue, responds to the timing set by your brain that tells you when to be metabolically active and when to rest.

Here’s how your internal clock is ideally supposed to work: you wake up with the sun, eat your first meal at 8:00am – which should be 50% of your calories for the day, stay active during the day, eat lunch at noon followed by a short rest, more activity, have a light evening meal at least 2 hours before the sun goes down, start winding down by 7:00pm, then go to sleep when the sun goes down. This cycle allows each organ and tissue its time of rest and also allows for its metabolic activity to reach its peak. But, our current hectic lifestyles with influences from blue light, stress, erratic eating habits, lack of exercise, and late nights, are wreaking havoc on our body’s biological clocks, and our health is suffering as a result.

You can turn it all around and get synchronized again with one simple change – bring breakfast back.

What Happens When You Eat Breakfast

When you get in tune with your body’s internal rhythm, metabolically speaking, everything runs like clockwork. It all starts with breakfast, which ideally happens for your body at 8:00am. This is when the hormones are in harmony and the timing is right for:

  • Superior glucose tolerance and balanced blood sugar
  • Increased energy
  • Enhanced concentration
  • Increased thermogenesis which boosts fat-burning metabolism while protecting lean muscle mass
  • Balanced cortisol levels which result in better stress tolerance and less anxiety
  • Decreased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes

Breakfast sets the stage for 12 hours of increased metabolic activity, which then leads to 12 hours of rest and regeneration for your body. Our modern nutrition research and new understanding of chrono-biology may sound complicated, but it has simply uncovered the biological clock that has been known for centuries and practiced in many healing traditions worldwide. For example, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is also the perfect Yin/Yang 24 hour cycle, and they have a 24 hour clock showing the peak times and rest times for each of your body’s main organs.

What About Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is the hottest new trend in weight loss, and for good reason – it works. There’s no reason why breakfast can’t be an integral part when we use the 16:8 model for IF, rather than the popular 5:2 method that drastically reduces calories. The 16:8 form of intermittent fasting allows you to eat nutrient-rich foods without counting calories, as long as you fast overnight for 16 hours then eat all of your meals within an 8-hour window.

While this method is among the most popular and the most studied, the research shows a fasting window of 11 hours or more is enough to accomplish the hunger hormone reset and achieve your weight loss goals. According to the studies, eating 50% of your calories before 10:00am leads to optimal weight loss. You can simply adjust your intermittent fasting window to allow for earlier eating, and use the end of your eating window to eat a smaller meal. Isn’t it interesting, that when left to its own internal timing, your body naturally has you eat all of your calories within a 12-hour window, and leaves the other 12 hours for rest and regeneration?

Retrain Your Brain for Better Weight Loss

Skipping breakfast throws your body out of whack, similar to working the night shift or taking a transatlantic flight. The rise in cortisol, accompanied by blood sugar highs and lows, leads to weight gain, which is well documented in studies of night shift workers. While the hypothalamus is the seat of your body’s master clock and regulates the activity of your metabolism, it does take input from the peripheral clock genes in the body and adjusts itself. This means skipping breakfast and reducing morning calories may very well be responsible for the loss of morning hunger, and eating more substantial meals shortly before the rise in melatonin starts at night and signals the body to rest. Eating a large meal before the overnight rest bogs down digestion, metabolism, and fat burning, and results in weight gain.

Retraining your brain for weight loss is as simple as eating a protein-packed power breakfast to start your metabolism off right for fat burning. It sounds like a daunting task to go from skipping or skimping on breakfast with a sugary coffee drink or high-glycemic breakfast bar to a nutrient-dense, protein packed full meal in the morning, but it’s easier and more convenient than you think.

Candida yeast is like a super-villain with a secret identity.

Candida is everywhere. It’s in the air you breathe, in the foods you eat, and is a normal part of everyone’s intestinal flora. When your intestinal flora is thriving, candida exists peacefully in the mucus membrane of your intestinal wall and is kept in check as part of a healthy balance. But, when normal probiotic defenses break down and conditions are ripe for Candida to overgrow, it changes its form and goes into attack mode, wreaking havoc in your body and causing a whole host of symptoms and problems. The changing face and form of Candida is what makes it such a challenge to effectively treat and reduce back to peaceable levels.

The Many Faces of Candida

More than 20 strains of Candida have been identified in the human body, and this fungus takes on several different forms in order to protect itself from being eradicated. Candida normally exists as a mild-mannered single-celled organism, nestled in the mucus membranes of the gastrointestinal tract, feeding on excess sugar to grow and reproduce. This is the lens through which researchers view it, and how drugs and even natural approaches are developed to counteract it.

The problem is, when Candida becomes pathogenic and no-more-mister-nice-guy, it joins itself together in long strands called hyphae that drill into the walls of the intestines, allowing fungus, toxins, and other debris direct access to blood vessels and other organs. These root-like structures also bore into macrophages, the immune system cells designed to kill Candida, and render them helpless to mount a defense against this aggressive invader. As if all that isn’t enough, it then groups together and forms a protective shield around itself known as a biofilm.

This protective biofilm allows Candida to create an environment it thrives in, with just the right pH and plenty of food to keep doing its dastardly deeds and growing its population. As this yeast spreads, reproduces, and distributes its toxic entourage, it can affect virtually any part of your body and cause a wide variety of symptoms.

Signs You May Have a Candida Overgrowth

Candida has won the popularity contest as the most common fungal infection, with one in three adults having an overgrowth. While it typically starts in the digestive tract, symptoms can be wide-ranging and varied, as it changes form and spreads to other areas of the body. You may feel:

  • Intense fatigue, headaches, insomnia, weight gain or loss, mood swings, pain, jittery feelings, appetite loss, agitation;
  • Bloating, flatulence, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, stools with mucus;
  • Burning, frequent, and/or urgent urination, recurring bladder infections, cystitis;
  • Cramps, irregular periods, depression, severe PMS symptoms;
  • Itching, burning, white vaginal discharge;
  • Dry mouth, rashes, sore and/or bleeding gums, white patches, white or brown coating on the tongue;
  • Nasal itching and sinus congestion;
  • Psoriasis, rashes, acne
  • Burning sensations in the eyes, blurry vision, floaters, chronic inflammation, tearing, sudden changes in vision;
  • Loss of hearing, fluid in middle ear, recurring infections, ear pain.
Yeast Overgrowth Risk Factors

Candida overgrowth is so prevalent, with such a variety of symptoms, it makes it difficult to zero in on the causes of this stealth infection. Fortunately, we know several risk factors, which greatly increase your chances of overgrowth. In truth, most of our difficulties with yeast are the unintended consequences of lifestyle habits and choices that were supposed to improve our health or help us lose weight. The most common risk factors include:

  • Repeated course of Antibiotics
  • Impaired Immunity, including from immunosuppressant medications
  • Hormone Fluctuations
  • Female Anatomy
  • Diet high in Carbohydrates and Sugars
  • Underactive Thyroid
  • Nutrient Deficiencies
  • Living in a Cool, Damp, Rainy Climate
  • Other Fungal Exposure, like Mold in Your Home
  • Heavy Metal Toxicity
Could You Have Excess Yeast? Take the Quiz!

With the wide variety of symptoms Candida overgrowth can cause, it can be confusing to determine if Candida is truly at the root of your issues. While this quiz can’t give you a definitive answer, it is helpful in narrowing down its potential role. This survey was originally created by the late William Crook, MD, a wonderful personal friend of mine who was considered a pioneer in researching the role of Candida in a plethora of health issues, and authored several books on the subject.

If your answer to any of the following questions is “yes,” write down the number of points for that question. At the end, add up the total points. Your final score indicates the probability of a yeast connection to your health issues.

  1. Have you taken repeated or prolonged courses of antibiotics? (4 points)
  2. Have you been bothered by recurrent vaginal, prostate, or urinary infections? (3 points)
  3. Do you feel “sick all over,” yet the cause has not been found? (2 points)
  4. Are you bothered by hormone disturbances, including PMS, menstrual irregularities, sexual dysfunction, sugar cravings, low body temperature, or fatigue? (2 points)
  5. Are you unusually sensitive to tobacco smoke, perfumes and colognes, and chemical odors? (2 points)
  6. Are you bothered by memory or concentration problems? Do you sometimes feel spaced out or in a brain fog? (2 points)
  7. Have you taken a prolonged course of prednisone or other steroids, or have you taken birth control pills for more than 3 years? (2 points)
  8. Do some foods disagree with you or trigger your symptoms? (1 point)
  9. Do you suffer with constipation, diarrhea, bloating, or abdominal pain? (1 point)
  10. Does your skin itch, tingle or burn; or is it unusually dry; or are you bothered by rashes? (1 point)

Women’s scores: If you score 9 or more, your health problems are probably linked to yeast overgrowth. If you score 12 or more, your health problems are almost certainly connected to yeast.

Men’s scores: If you score 7 or more, your health problems are most likely linked to yeast. A score of 10 or more indicates that your health problems are almost certainly connected to yeast.

Break the Biofilm to Beat the Candida

Recent research shows biofilms make yeast much more resistant to treatment and hide it from your immune system. When Candida groups together, it’s more aggressive and doesn’t respond to treatment the same way a cell on its own would. A large, well-established population forms a biofilm that seems to withstand most of what you throw its way. The longer the Candida is allowed to overgrow, the stronger the biofilm and the more it can resist treatment.

Biofilms are matrices made of complex sugars called polysaccharides. One-third of a biofilm is comprised of glucose, the sugar your body uses the most. So, Candida not only feeds on sugar to grow and reproduce, it also uses it to form the protective shell around each colony. It would seem the logical approach is to cut the sugar out of your diet and use anti-candida herbs, but because of the strength of the biofilm and its ability to use your body’s own blood sugar supply, a more coordinated, 4-pronged approach is needed to beat the biofilm and truly tame Candida into submission.

  1. Cut Off the Food Supply. All carbohydrates can be broken down into the sugars Candida feeds on. So it’s not only essential to eliminate all obvious sources of sugars, but also to severely restrict carbs in the diet. This includes fruits, juices, alcoholic beverages, and not just processed grains but whole grains that contain gluten as well. I also recommend removing mushrooms and fermented foods (except raw apple cider vinegar) while you are cleansing your body of yeast, because these also encourage Candida overgrowth.
  2. Add Enzymes to Break Down Biofilms. Proteolytic enzymes are enzymes that “chew up” and break down the bonds holding the biofilms together. Lumbrokinase, nattokinase, and serrapeptase are among the most powerful biofilm disrupting enzymes we’ve discovered to date. Anti-inflammatory enzyme products like Wobenzym and Inflazym are also heavy hitters when it comes to breaking down biofilms. Anytime you break open a biofilm, the toxic contents are no longer walled off and your body is exposed in proportions it’s not accustomed to. It’s akin to cracking open the shell on an egg. This means you may experience a worsening of your symptoms temporarily while the toxic contents are being flushed out. While this is unpleasant, it’s a good sign you are on the right track.
  3. Use Antifungal Supplements to Eradicate Candida. Once the biofilm is broken down, Candida is wide open for attack.   4. Reinforce Your “Good Guys” with Probiotics. The environment outside of you has a direct impact on what’s going on inside your body, including your mental health.

We have unknowingly created a world that disconnects us from everything we need to be healthy and happy, and replaced it with what makes us fat, sick, and depressed. Toxins are everywhere around us – in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Invisible threats to our health wear us down over time, like radiation and EMFs, lack of exposure to sunlight, not enough time in nature and the outdoors, artificial light at night disrupting our sleep, over 80,000 untested chemicals in our homes and environment, digestive issues that impair our immunity and block our ability to absorb nutrients, and so much more.

We look at celebrities like Robin Williams, Kate Spade, and Anthony Bourdain, who seem to have it all, but are suffering so much inside. Robin Williams was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and ended his life for that reason. Kate Spade lived in New York City, where toxic fumes and moldy buildings abound and these may have contributed to her mental health issues. Anthony Bourdain ate exotic foods all around the world, undoubtedly exposed to a variety of parasites, as well as heavy metals and unwanted invaders through his history of heroin abuse. The truth is, we’re all exposed to toxins, no matter where we live, and how they wreak havoc in our bodies can unfortunately lead to unthinkable consequences.

All hope is not lost, however. By understanding and identifying the underlying causes of depression and anxiety, you can change your environment and turn your mental health around for the better.

1. Your Gut Rules Your Mind

If you’ve ever been so anxious over an event that you’ve lost your appetite or even experienced digestive distress, then you understand the power of the gut-brain connection. The trillions of microorganisms that make up your intestinal flora known as the microbiome produce and communicate with the hundreds of neurochemicals that your brain uses to regulate your moods, thinking, and countless bodily functions. Did you know over 90 percent of your neurotransmitters are created and used in your gut? GABA, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters familiar to those who struggle with depression and anxiety, and all are made by your intestinal flora.

These probiotics carry on a constant 2-way communication with your brain and nervous system, directly affecting your moods, emotions, how you respond to stress, and more. Changes to even one strain of bacteria in your microbiome can directly lead to anxiety. Consuming sugar, being under stress, overusing antibiotics, taking steroids and other medications, hormone changes, exposure to toxic mold, parasites and other “bad bugs”, and having chronic illness can all harm the helpful bacteria in your intestines and disrupt the delicate balance of your microbiome.

The solution is simple: regular cleansing like our ancestors did every Spring and Autumn, a nutrient-rich diet that is high in fermented foods and low-glycemic without all the processed foods and sugars, learning how to manage all types of stress, and supplementing with probiotics to keep healthy populations at optimal levels.

Enjoying a warm cup of tea on a cool morning reminds me of being in England. Though the British are famous for their love of tea, countries all over the world have traditions that celebrate this ancient soothing beverage, making it the most widely consumed drink in the world after water. While a little fluoride is good for your teeth, a lot will shut down your thyroid. If fluoride shuts down your thyroid, then you’re not doing your metabolism any favors by getting a daily infusion in your tea.

Instant tea and teas from China and India tend to be the most contaminated, as China is the world’s top pesticide user. Japanese teas tend to be better, but since the Fukushima disaster, we need to keep radioactive contamination in mind. Organic teas will have fewer pesticides but may be high in fluoride. If you have thyroid issues, tea may not be the drink of choice for you because of potential fluoride exposure.

I recommend limiting your tea intake to 2 cups per day, and choosing the cleanest varieties you can find. Fortunately, I’ve done the legwork and research for you on this and have found some of the purest and most polyphenol-rich teas available.

The verdict is in: antioxidant-rich coffee helps you shed those unwanted pounds!

For most of human history, mankind had to worry about getting enough nutrition, but we are in such a time of abundance that now obesity is a leading health problem. Many overweight and obese people have a condition called metabolic syndrome, which can be a precursor to multiple dangerous diseases. For example, people with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease and 5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Fortunately, new research has come out that drinking coffee can contribute to fat loss, and by shedding pounds you can reverse or prevent many diseases. Let’s look at what the latest research shows, with 3 ways scientists have determined coffee contributes to weight loss.

1. Coffee Curbs Your Appetite

Two molecules are major indicators of how hungry we feel, as well as how much food it takes to satisfy us: serotonin and ghrelin. You may have heard serotonin discussed in reference to various forms of depression, but what you may not have heard is that serotonin is one of the molecules that makes a major difference in human appetites and satiety levels.

A lack of serotonin in your system can often lead to increased appetite and weight gain. This is why people with depression caused by low serotonin levels may struggle with weight gain as well. When the body has higher levels of serotonin secretion, the appetite is suppressed and people feel fuller after eating less food.

A recent study1 used these satiety markers, as well as DNA and BMI measurements and found that coffee had significant impacts on body fat levels and food intake. For a specialty blend of coffee that included select green beans and a dark roast high in chlorogenic acids (CGAs), the weight difference was more pronounced than with just a regular store blend. The fact that the specialty blend had the most impact suggests that the CGAs in coffee may play a major part in aiding metabolism and suppressing appetite.

2. Coffee Makes Binge Eating Less Likely

A bad day at the office or sheer boredom can often trigger eating far too much in one sitting. Binge eating can have very damaging effects when done regularly, but even occasional binges can inhibit weight loss efforts. One chemical that is correlated inversely with binge eating is oxytocin. This is another molecule associated with mental and emotional health, often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical that is associated with affection and feelings of connection.

DNA analysis in subjects of a 2016 study2 found that “single nucleotide polymorphisms” (SNPs), which are a form of genetic “instructions”, are correlated with certain psychological traits. People with those SNPs and psychological traits accounted for a 37% variance in overeating, and also have lower levels of oxytocin in their systems. This correlates a deficit of oxytocin secretions with a greater tendency to binge eat.

Studies have found that the caffeine in coffee actually plays a part in generating more oxytocin in a person’s system. Caffeine’s function as an adenosine inhibitor (the chemical that makes you sleepy) excites the oxytocin neuron in the process. A study published in 2017 found this effect to be true in mice, and also noticed that this had the added effect of decreasing the mice’s dietary obesity. Coffee inhibited their appetites and increased their energy expenditures, and researchers stated that the increased oxytocin in their systems played a major part in that result.

3. Coffee Fights the “Battle of the Bulge” with its Anti-Inflammatory Effects

The same function that makes coffee a health tonic – preventing multiple diseases – makes it an effective tool in the fight against obesity. Obesity has a proven association with inflammation and oxidative stress, which are associated with its frequent comorbidities like type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases.

Chlorogenic acids (CGAs) are antioxidants, which means they fight the oxidative stress that leads to inflammation. Free radicals from everything including pollution in the environment to a low-quality diet, and even too-high levels of nitrogen or oxygen, do damage our cell membranes. Antioxidants work at the DNA level to counter the damage done by free radicals, and therefore can affect the very genes that can contribute to inflammation and weight gain.

According to one study3, “Regular coffee consumption affects the transcription of genes associated with obesity and/or inflammation. Metabolites of chlorogenic acids as well as genetic polymorphisms may be relevant influencing factors.” These researchers tracked weight loss and coffee intake, and not only did they correlate the two, but they also noticed markers for inflammation. Factors like TNFα, IL6 and hepatic C-reactive protein (CRP) were reduced as well. That’s good news for weight loss as well as a mother lode of other disease prevention.

Optimize Your Coffee Intake for Weight Loss

While this sounds like great news for all coffee-lovers, results vary with what kind of coffee you drink and how you drink it. For one thing, be aware of what you are putting in your coffee. Additives like sugar and cream (or getting your daily dose of caffeine in the form of milky espresso drinks) can add excess calories to your diet that will counteract weight loss effects. Studies have shown that even using artificial sweeteners can contribute to a larger waistline4.

Secondly, be sure you are drinking coffee with the highest number of CGAs possible. Coffee with the highest amount of chlorogenic acids has the greatest effects on reducing inflammation and suppressing appetite. Discover the natural solution to cell phone pollution.

My old friend Dr. Andy Weil once said, “Electromagnetic pollution may be the most significant form of pollution human activity has produced this century, all the more dangerous because it is invisible and insensible.”

When Dr. Weil made this statement in the early 2000s, the understanding that long-term exposure to EMF radiation from cell phones causes harm was not that widely known, and what was understood was diminished and hidden by cell phone manufacturers. We now have a thorough understanding, backed up by decades of scientific research discussed in detail in my book Zapped, that cell phone radiation is indeed incredibly dangerous.

Through this research we have discovered:
  • Using a modern cell phone for as little as 500 minutes a month (most of us use our phones much more than this) can increase the likelihood of developing certain brain cancers by 140%-300%. (1)
  • Long-term exposure to cell phone radiation has been shown to cause leakage of the delicate blood-brain barrier allowing toxins to more easily penetrate and damage brain tissue. (2)
  • Using your cell phone regularly for as little as six years can increase your risk of developing a tumor of the auditory nerve by 50%. (3)
  • EMF radiation from cell phones has been shown throw off hormone balance in the body by increasing estrogen and adrenaline production. (4)

I could go on, but you get the point – seemingly harmless, invisible EMF radiation from cell phones is dangerous.

How EMF Radiation from Cell Phones Harms Your Body

We now understand that there are primarily two ways that EMF radiation from a cell phone harms the body:

  • Near Field Plume Radiation
  • ICRW (Information-Carrying Radio Wave)

The near field plume is what scientists call the extremely intense amount of extremely low frequency EMF radiation (eEMR) that “plumes” about 6-8 inches from the cell phone. Scientists have proven that this intense EMF radiation can penetrate extremely deep into biological tissue.

ICRW stands for Information-Carrying Radio Wave, and this is the actual radio wave that carries information from your cell phone to a cell tower, and onto the receiver. The information you are sending, whether you’re talking on your cell phone, sending a photo or video, or anything else, is carried by this wave. This combination signal vibrates at around 800-2200 megahertz and this extremely fast vibration is what has been shown to cause damage in the body.

Here is how that damage actually occurs:

The cells inside our body have their own receptors located within the cell membrane. These receptors are fully capable of receiving and being affected by chemical and vibrational signals. Our cells pick up on this EMF radiation and sense it as a foreign signal, dramatically inhibiting our cells’ ability to communicate, function, and even reproduce. This is one of the reasons that blood work such as dark field microscopy is such a powerful tool for deciphering how much damage cell phones cause, because we can see what the EMF radiation is doing to the cells.

Just like with any foreign invader, when the body senses EMF radiation it begins to do whatever it can to protect itself. One of the ways it does this is by inhibiting the active transport channels within the cell membranes, reducing their permeability and ability to function. This affects not only your body’s ability to get healthy nutrients into your cells, but also your body’s ability to kick toxins and free radicals out of your cells. As free radicals begin to build up inside of our cells, they lose the ability to repair and properly replicate DNA.

Also, this same cell phone radiation has been shown to dramatically increase the formation of micronuclei, which are essentially just DNA fragments that occur when cells are improperly formed. When these damaged cells die, called apoptosis, the contents of the cell are released and these contents are called micronuclei. Under healthy conditions this is not an issue because your body’s immune system sends macrophages out to get rid of these damaged cell contents. However, because the ICRW we discussed earlier inhibits your cells’ ability to communicate, this message is not received by the immune system.

Now these damaged cell parts sit idle, and over time in a nutrient-rich environment begin to clone exponentially. This process is believed to be the cause of dramatically increased tumor rates in people with long-term exposure to EMF radiation.

Symptoms from Cell Phone Radiation

The disruption of cell communication and replication from cell phone EMF radiation causes a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Brain Fog or Trouble Concentrating
  • Skin Irritation
  • Atypical Chest Pain
  • Stiff Muscles, especially in the Neck

Long-term health issues can include:

How You Can Protect Yourself

Let’s face it, smart phones are beyond convenient at this point, they are essentially mandatory for our modern world. There are many cell phone cases on the market that advertise blocking EMF radiation, but what they often end up doing is forcing your phone to work harder to maintain its signal. And for every bar of lost signal, your phone has been shown to increase its power by 1000 percent just to maintain a connection. This power boost dramatically increases the amount of EMF radiation the phone puts out, which increases the damage to your body.

Even if a cell phone case were to be created that didn’t cause this issue, it’s nearly impossible to block all of the radiation from getting to the body without inhibiting our ability to use the device. The key is not to try to block or absorb the radiation from your cell phone, but instead to change the waveform so your body does not recognize it as a foreign invader, triggering the domino effect of cell destruction.

I’m approached weekly about different EMF protection products, but very few prove their worth when the rubber meets the road. Best-selling antibiotics like Cipro and Levaquin may be doing you more harm than good.

On the morning of October 4th, 2010, Keri woke with symptoms of a UTI.  Being no stranger to this, she called her boss to tell her she was going to run by the minor emergency clinic and would be a few minutes late to work.  The doctor gave her a prescription for Levaquin. Within an hour of taking her first pill, the left side of her face was swollen, her breathing was labored, she was chilled to the bone, shaking, nauseous and her heart was racing. She took a Benadryl, called the doctor and was assured that the worst would be over soon.

It was just the beginning.

Keri’s health began to deteriorate immediately. She had to leave her job and lay on the couch for a year as she suffered with:  abdominal cramping, headaches, shakiness, dizziness, loss of appetite and weight, nausea, hot and cold flashes, bouts of constipation and diarrhea, weakness, achiness, tinnitus, brain fog, sight problems, tremors, electrical zaps through her body, memory loss, heartburn, muscle wasting, strange rashes, back pain, tachycardia, fatigue, insomnia, joint and muscle pain, neuropathy, low blood pressure, food and chemical sensitivities, teeth breaking and more.

She told every doctor she saw that she’d been sick ever since a reaction to Levaquin and she believed them when they said it couldn’t be related – until she decided to look up the drug she had reacted to. She read so many stories like her own and finally knew what had plagued her body – Fluoroquinolone Toxicity. (Read more about Keri’s story here.)

The Shocking Truth

In 2008, the FDA issued its first Black Box warning for the Fluoroquinolones; this highly toxic class of medications was known for causing tendon ruptures. Since then, additional warnings have been given because “these medicines are associated with disabling and potentially permanent side effects of the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system that can occur together in the same patient.” Other serious and disabling side effects can include permanent peripheral neuropathy, worsening of myasthenia gravis, cardiac effects, dermatologic reactions, and hypersensitivity.

Reports of adverse effects to this class of antibiotics continue to pour into the FDA, and lawsuits against the manufacturers abound. Current investigations include association of these drugs with reports of retinal detachment in the eye and aortic aneurysm or dissection. If a connection is found, these former-chemotherapy-drugs-turned-antibiotics will go from warnings for being dangerous and disabling to outright deadly.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin), Factive (gemifloxacin), Noroxin (norfloxacin), and Floxin (ofloxacin) disrupt collagen synthesis and do damage at the DNA level. This effect comes primarily from the fluoride component of the drugs, which gives them their potency. Fluoride is also responsible for their ability to penetrate into deeper tissues and cross the blood-brain barrier, making them potent neurotoxins and affecting the brain and entire central nervous system. As high as 91 percent of patients taking these drugs have reported nervous system effects from dizziness to even psychosis, not to mention the musculoskeletal, sensory, cardiovascular, skin, and gastrointestinal reactions.

What To Do if You’ve Been “Floxed”

Sadly, Keri’s story is far too common. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs on the market, so reactions and adverse effects are numerous. If you’ve been injured by one of these drugs, here are 5 steps you can take to recover and restore your health.

1. Clean Up Your Diet. Reduce inflammation and start flushing out the toxins just by cleaning up your diet. Keep your freedom – age well and live at home into your “golden years” with these helpful hacks.

We tend to be complacent as long as everyone is functioning well. But no one thinks they’ll get sick until they get sick, or become injured until they fall. If you can foresee potential problems and head them off with these safety and wellness hacks while things are status quo, you can establish a proactive plan that everyone agrees to and help your parents (and you) to age well, at home, for as long as possible.

Most of us don’t even think about where we’ll spend our elder years until we face that reality with one or both of our parents. As time takes its toll on their bodies and minds, the challenge comes of deciding whether they can stay at home with modifications or if an assisted living or nursing facility needs to be considered. A lot goes into a decision like this, including whether good quality, natural health care options are still available in a residential facility, which is honestly a rare find.

I sat down with Lynda Shrager, OTR, MSW, CAPS, the author of Age In Place: A Guide to Modifying, Organizing, and Decluttering Mom and Dad’s Home (Bull Publishing, April 4, 2018), to get a better perspective on this increasingly common issue. Her newspaper column, Mom’s RX, has appeared in countless newspapers across the country, and she is a featured columnist for Everyday Health, one of the country’s leading online consumer health websites.

Should They Stay Home?

Today, some 90 percent of people age 65 and over say they want to spend their senior years in their homes, continuing to make independent choices and maintain control of their lives. Aging in place has psychological benefits in that it allows seniors to remain involved in activities of daily living in a familiar environment. This includes access to high quality, natural and integrative health care options that promote wellness and longevity beyond what mainstream medicine alone has to offer.

It also has financial benefits, as assisted living facilities cost an average of $50,000 annually. You can do a lot of natural and nutritional therapies for the “wellderly” for that amount of money yearly to hold on to optimal health for as long as possible. Integrative care and healing diets are also very popular with seniors who no longer want to take so many meds, finding side effects unbearable, and seeking more natural alternatives. Preserving independence at home is essential to maintaining access to these complimentary therapies.

To help them stay in their home for as long as possible, family members and caregivers need to ascertain if mom or dad are having any physical or cognitive problems and what plan they need to deploy before there’s a crisis. Aging in place can become risky, and getting aging parents on board with modifying their routines and surroundings can be a challenge. If your parents aren’t ready to budge from their place of residence, yet you sense a decline in either their home upkeep or self-care, it’s best to be proactive.

Doing the Detective Work

Their answer to “How are you doing?” will most likely be “We’re fine.” To make staying in their home viable, you’ll need to go on a fact-finding mission. This requires more than a phone call to check in with them.

Your sleuthing begins with an in-person visit to their home. Spend time with them as they move through their daily routines. Do they “furniture surf” when moving around the house? Are they unsteady on the steps when they go out to get the newspaper? Did their lost car keys end up in the refrigerator?

Once you’ve finished the walk, then it’s time to have the talk. While parents are never eager to hear that their abilities are becoming compromised, a presentation of your findings – stated within the context of addressing safety issues so that they can stay in their home – will help bring them on board.

Steps for Safety

Here are some issues you may find you need to address as you do your detective work:

  1. Attack the clutter to de-stress. Keepsakes are often what makes a house feel like a home, but cherished belongings accumulated over a lifetime morph into clutter. Clutter takes up precious space needed for moving around the house safely. The disorganization also contributes to stress. To make the case for decluttering, role-play with your parents that you’re first-time guests in the house. With fresh eyes, get them to notice where stacks of paper have accumulated, dusty trinkets have collected and miscellaneous items have gathered.
  2. Make modifications to aid mobility. Point out where you’ve observed any instability in your parents’ movement as they walk through their daily routines. Share ways to address how to improve safety and facilitate their mobility. Installing a handrail along the steps will improve stair-use stability. Install grab bars to help with exiting the tub or shower, and also opposite the toilet to provide leverage for sitting and standing back up. If using a suction grab bar, remember that it’s only for balance, not for bearing weight. In addition, insist on a safe step stool with one step only – any more may cause issues with equilibrium. If they use hard-to-access items regularly, move them to a counter or tabletop.
  3. Up the wattage to improve visibility. As we age, we need more light in order to see adequately. Good lighting is a key safety feature. Encourage mom and dad to increase the wattage of light bulbs in high-use areas, such as near the chair where dad sits to read or the desk where mom pays bills. A nightlight to illuminate the path from the bed to the bathroom is a necessary precaution. For hard to reach lamps, consider clapper-type lamps. And, if their dog tends to lie in the pathway from the bed to the bathroom at night, a glow-in-the-dark collar can keep him from becoming a tripping hazard.
  4. Delegate financial and household duties. If you sense that your parents are becoming overwhelmed with managing the bills and general household maintenance, your helpful hacks should include how best to delegate these duties. It may be time to assemble a team of helpers. Do they have a handy man who can make regular calls?

Finances may need to be relegated to a family member to whom they give power of attorney. It’s now easy to remotely assist them by setting up online banking, direct deposits of Social Security or pension checks and automatic bill payments. Help them create a “treasure map” of where important records, documents and belongings are kept. Create duplicate house keys, plastic access cards, electronic door openers and combinations to any locks. Label keys and be sure to distribute copies to designated friends and family.

  1. Keep emergency numbers close at hand. Help mom and dad create an emergency list containing phone numbers for local ambulance companies, fire, police and hospital emergency rooms, and post it in a prominent place. Both of you should have that list, plus contact information of all family, friends and neighbors who live close enough to get to them quickly. Keep the list accessible at all times, and make sure to keep the various contacts updated.
Wellness Hacks for Seniors

We now have such a healthy sub-group of seniors, I refer to them as the “wellderly.” Whether they are relatively new to healthy eating and boosting metabolism with nutritional supplements or are old pros at being holistically healthy, they share many of these characteristics:

  • Take charge of their own health. The wellderly do the research and seek out like-minded practitioners who treat their issues within their naturally-minded healthcare beliefs. They ask questions, both of their practitioners and of others who have successfully healed from the issues they face, and make their own decisions on their treatment plans. They get regular screenings to head off any nutrient imbalances before they become a full-blown diagnosis.
  • Stay social. These seniors don’t isolate themselves from family and community who seek to support them and build them up. Nurturing these relationships is essential to thriving in their advancing years, and they keep them up through everything from group activities to social media.
  • Keep moving. It’s true – if you don’t use it, you lose it. Healthy, active older adults know that to keep your mobility and balance, you need to move your body through daily stretching and exercise. Staying active helps you stay flexible, strong and healthy at any age. Exercise has amazing health benefits for the body, mind and spirit whether you are 1 or 100.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is the key to rejuvenation and cellular repair, and is essential for healthy aging. Insomnia responds well to natural therapies from mindfulness and massage to nutritional supplements and daily exercise.
