As a health pioneer, I have been on the frontlines of nutrition for more than 30 years. Now I’m focusing in on metabolism at the level of the cell, because everything starts there!
If you describe yourself as a “slow loser,” you likely have some degree of metabolic damage. My new program is aimed at turning this around, especially for those with thyroid issues.
Here’s the thing: Thyroid problems are epidemic today.
Did you know, for example, that your thyroid depends on getting enough of the right fats to function optimally? In fact, fats are critical to ALL of your body’s vital operations. And it’s more than just the omega-3s that you hear so much about—the 3s, the 6s and the 9s all have their metabolic roles to play.
With my Spring QuickStart, you will flood your body with metabolically active fats and other superfoods—such as the long-forgotten bitters—that will heal and seal your gut, provide boundless energy and result in effortless weight loss. We will prime the pump with a tasty two-week program that includes your favorite Fat Flush meals, metabolism-maxing supplements, and beverages that help flush fat-binding toxins from your body.
It’s so simple! Here’s the plan in a nutshell:
Breakfast: A supercharged Energy Blaster made with cacao, coffee and coconut milk.
Lunch: A filling Creamy Frappe made with Fat Flush Body Protein or Whey Protein.
Dinner: A wholesome Fat Flush meal with high-quality protein, skinny fats and unlimited vegetables.
To further fire up your fat burners, you will select four days for doing mini-fasts. Don’t let the word “fast” scare you because hunger isn’t part of the plan—even on those fasting days! You will be amazed at how satisfied you become when your body is getting everything it needs. In no time at all, you’ll be reaching for those skinny jeans or that little black dress you’ve missed so much.
One of the program’s biggest assets is its support system. Studies show that support is critical to success in almost any endeavor. The Spring Kickoff to a Radical Metabolism is built around community. If you participated in QuickStart to get the year going, you’ll LOVE this recharge. If you missed it last time, this is your chance to participate in this limited-time, life changing program.
The program’s success rate is proof that support really does make a difference. Here’s what a few excited folks had to say:
Sandy F. says: “I am (almost) sleeping like a baby and there is a spring in my step that I haven’t had in years. I love the energy I am having to tackle the things I’ve been putting off for ages. Even my thinking is clearer.”
Juli J. says: “I aimed for losing 15 pounds and blew past that! I had to purchase skinnier jeans! Skinny wasn’t my goal, just cleaning up my diet and optimizing my health. This is the best because it changes the way you think about food. Stick with it and you will be rewarded in more ways that you can imagine.”
Laura M. [diagnosed with hypothyroidism] says: “I did it–I lost 15 pounds!”
Layne K. says: “Dear Fat Flush friends and supporters, I recently posted that I had lost 10 pounds on QuickStart. I am delighted with my progress this far! Thank you all for your good wishes!”

There’s a hidden danger to using fats for fuel for your body.
Have you gone “keto” yet? The ketogenic diet, a.k.a. “going keto,” is all the rage right now, with celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian endorsing it, calling it a “reset” or detox for the body. While it’s true that it resets the way your body uses nutrients, by burning fats instead of sugars, one question remains – why do people get so tired and “crash” after they’ve been on the diet for an extended period of time? It seems there is definitely at least one Keto con.
What is the keto diet’s fatal flaw? To understand this, first you need a good understanding of what the keto diet really does.
The Keto Diet Breakdown
In a nutshell, the keto diet is broken down into 75% fats, 20% proteins, and 5% carbohydrates. By eating macronutrients in these percentages, instead of burning carbs and sugars, you burn your body’s own fat stores. This is called ketosis, which your body recognizes as a type of fasting. Your fat cells are where you store toxins you are unable to process and your body dilutes those toxins with water to keep them from poisoning you.
Your liver is the source of the ketones being produced, and your kidneys pass them through to the urine, where you measure them as a sign of progress on the diet. The first weight you lose on a ketogenic diet is water weight, which causes the toxins in your fat cells to concentrate, often giving you symptoms that have been coined the “keto flu.” These symptoms range from digestive upset and skin rashes to headaches and body aches, similar to the symptoms you get from toxicities.
It isn’t long before your body is flushing out those fat cells and hopefully the toxins are flushing with them, rather than being redeposited into deeper tissues. At first, you feel good and the weight loss is a morale-booster. But after a while the fatigue sets in, often accompanied by anxiety, insomnia, and more. What’s causing these troubling symptoms?
Solving the Keto Puzzle
A friend came to me recently, remarking how much older a well-known doctor was looking after several months on the keto diet. “He has dark circles around his eyes but they’re white in the inside corners, his cheeks look sunken and he looks like he’s aged several years! What is it about going keto that does this, Dr. Ann Louise?”
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) gave us the answers to this question thousands of years ago with their practice of face mapping. Those are signs of mineral imbalances, including copper, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, and more, just in that one loaded question.
Once mineral imbalances and deficiencies set in, it isn’t long before adrenal fatigue follows behind, and that’s when you start feeling tired from your carb restriction. A quick fix in the form of carb loading is often recommended, but it’s not the real answer. It isn’t the sugars and carbs your body is missing; it’s the mineral-rich, enzyme-loaded vegetables and fruits your body really wants, not to mention the essential fats present in seeds and nuts.
Mind Your Minerals
If you do a search for the ketogenic diet’s impact on adrenals, you will get hundreds of thousands of hits. But if you go to Medscape or PubMed and do the same search, you will come up with nothing. The reason for this is mainstream medicine does not recognize adrenal fatigue as a diagnosis. What it does recognize are mineral deficiencies, like sodium, for example, which causes fatigue, anxiety, and insomnia, among other symptoms. The solution for the sodium loss is good quality salt, like unrefined Celtic or Himalayan, but this doesn’t address the need for magnesium, calcium, and so many other minerals.
You see, while you’re losing that water weight and flushing those fat cells, the minerals you’ve accumulated are going along for the ride. At first, this can feel like a good thing if sodium retention has been causing you swelling. But, eventually the mineral loss is more than what your body needs and your sagging skin and TCM facial signs are showing you the mineral imbalances resulting from severe carbohydrate restriction.
Supplementing with minerals like salt and magnesium alone is not the answer – you need real food loaded with the proper balance of essential minerals. Continuing with the sodium example, once your body is excreting a lot of sodium, your body will send signals to conserve it. This causes potassium wasting, so now your potassium levels are dropping. Your muscles (especially the heart) and nerves need enough potassium to function properly. Too much or too little potassium can have life-threatening consequences.
As critical minerals are becoming imbalanced, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are affected, and this leads to what we call adrenal fatigue. If you feel tired all the time and are experiencing anxiety and/or insomnia, I strongly suggest getting an HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) done through UNI KEY Health as soon as possible to measure your mineral levels. Using a small hair sample, the lab generates a detailed report of which minerals are too high or too low and gives recommendations to get them back in balance.
Face the Fats
Staples of the keto diet include foods like butter, cheese, cream, eggs, and meat – a lot of saturated fats. While saturated fats are not the villains they were portrayed as for so many years, they still need to be consumed in balance with other fats. Your body can make most of the types of fats it needs, but this isn’t the case with essential fats. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats have gotten the most attention for their numerous, positive health effects, but there are other essential fats as well, including Omega 7 and Omega 9.
All of these essential fats have one thing in common – they are present in ideal ratios in nuts, seeds, and their oils. These foods are lacking in the typical keto diet, or are out of balance with the abundance of saturated fats. If your saturated fats are coming from grass-fed animals, then your Omega 3 fat consumption is better than most. But, you’ll still need to get your lesser-known essential fats like Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA), Omega 7 and Omega 9 from plant-based sources.

Given the right nutrients, your joints can repair themselves, which means less joint pain for you.
When your joints are stiff, aching and swollen first thing in the morning, either with age or overuse, you may have osteoarthritis, the most common form of joint damage. You are far from alone – an estimated 54 million people are told yearly they have some form of arthritis, and that number is expected to rise to 78 million by 2040. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, caused by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to bone rubbing on bone and wearing down.
The cushion in your joints between the bones is cartilage, which is made up of a combination of proteins and sugars. When it’s healthy, it allows bones to glide over each other and absorbs the shock of any movement. When your joints are inflamed, misaligned, or worn from overuse, this cushion of cartilage thins out, breaks down, and can no longer do its job, causing joint pain and osteoarthritis as the result.
Cutting Edge Cartilage News
Until recently, doctors believed articular cartilage, the cushion in our hip, knee and ankle joints, could not be repaired once it was injured. The job of this protective covering over the ends of our bones is to cushion our joints from the pressure we exert on them. For example, the pressure on your knees when you are walking on level ground is 1.5 times your body weight. So, if you weigh 200 pounds, your knees carry the weight of 300 pounds of pressure with each step you take, and the pressure goes up as your speed goes up or you walk on an incline.
Thanks to the work of doctors at Stanford like Constance Chu, MD, we have discovered that articular cartilage slowly but surely repairs itself; given rest and the nutrients it needs it takes about a year, according to her MRI studies. That’s good news to the 27 million arthritis sufferers in the US alone. Joint replacement surgeries are on the rise, and Dr. Chu’s goal is to make the next generation of joint replacements biologic – with proteins and stem cells, not artificial joints.
Before your turn to joint replacements of any kind, start by avoiding the medications that inhibit healing, while feeding your joints the nutrients they need to heal.
The Damage from NSAIDs
There’s no doubt that NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen, aspirin, Mobic, and so many others provide temporary relief from the joint pain caused by joint damage. But, did you know these NSAIDs also restrict the normal increase in blood flow that bathes damaged tissues in oxygen? It’s true, and even the smallest dose prevents healing at the cellular level. But that’s not all – NSAIDs prevent collagen formation, the “glue” that holds our cells together and is necessary for healing bones, tendons, and joints.
Whenever possible, avoid NSAID medications and turn to supplements and foods to nourish the joint tissues and promote healing.
The Collagen Connection
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, holding together our tendons, muscles, bones, cartilage, joints, skin, and more. But, by the time we turn 21, our collagen production slows down and declines as we age, causing thinning and weakening of the cartilage in the joints, which leads to arthritis. The good news is daily weight-bearing exercise like walking enables cartilage to repair more easily and keeps collagen strong. This type of exercise is essential to rebuilding and repairing our joints as we age.
Though it’s often described as the “glue” which holds our tissues together, collagen is actually a fiber that’s stronger than steel. What makes it this strong are fibers that cross-link with sulfur. When these cross-links are missing, we make keratin instead, a somewhat strong protein normally present in hair, skin, and nails. Unfortunately this protein isn’t as strong as cartilage, and the result is scar tissue that’s easily damaged and re-injured. DMSO can be applied to the skin over a painful joint twice daily, and significant relief is usually the result, thanks to its high sulfur content and ability to penetrate into deep tissues. Alternatively, MSM is the oral form of this sulfur-rich supplement and can be taken in doses of 500 to 1,000mg 3 times daily with meals.
Beauty and the Broth
No conversation about collagen is complete without bone broth. All collagen comes from animal proteins, and is found in the “gristle,” the toughest, most difficult to eat cuts of meat that are available. When you cook these grass-fed beef bones, you cook the collagen, which creates gelatin. This gelatin is one of the main reasons bone broth is so nutritious. As you get your bone broth in daily, you will notice over time that the youthful glow to your skin will return, which is the “beauty” of having enough collagen.
The best bone broth is the one you make at home, with grass-fed beef bones, roasted and then cooked slowly for many hours on the stove or in the slow cooker. A good bone broth will become thick and jiggle once it’s chilled, indicating it has a high gelatin content.
My favorite brand to buy is Kettle & Fire, which was the only brand I tested that did not have high levels of heavy metals. All animals store environmental contaminants like fluoride, lead, arsenic and other heavy metals in their bones, so it’s essential to have a clean source for your broth. For this reason, I cannot recommend any of the bone broth powders on the market; they’ve all tested high in heavy metals and contaminants. Real, unadulterated bone broth is key to relieving your joint pain.
If collagen protein powder is a better fit for your lifestyle than pure bone broth, then Great Lakes Collagen is the only tried and true, clean brand I recommend. Great Lakes Gelatin is rich in glycine, the most abundant amino acid present in collagen, and can be used in cooking, baking, and even making healthy gummy snacks, which is a great way to supplement collagen in children.
The Protective Effects of Hyaluronic Acid
Your joints not only have cartilage as a cushion, but also a thick, viscous liquid lubricating them and protecting the cartilage from wearing down. Hyaluronic acid is the starchy substance in this fluid that thickens and creates the viscosity similar to grease or motor oil that is the hallmark of its joint protective effects. People with osteoarthritis have been found in studies to have low levels of hyaluronic acid in this fluid, which leads to the characteristic joint damage. While there are hyaluronic acid joint injections available for the knees, a good oral supplement like Baxyl has been shown to be effective in reducing joint pain within a month of taking it. These supplements also show an increase in hyaluronic acid in the joints over time. The studies done have cautioned against using too much, which is amounts of 200mg or more. The amounts present in Baxyl are well within the safe and effective range.
Anti-Inflammatory Healthy Fats for Healthy Joints
Omega 3 fats found in fish oil are superstars for joint health. Studies show there are benefits for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. In both cases, the Omega 3 fats reduce the amount of inflammation present in the thick fluid that bathes the joints. With the high prevalence of contaminants and heavy metals found in our waters, I only use UNI KEY Health’s Super-EPA because I trust their testing and quality.
As important as it is to get the right fats in to nourish your joints, it’s equally as important to avoid the wrong fats. The inflammatory Omega 6 vegetable oils like canola, corn, and soy need to be eliminated from our diets because the ratio between these inflammatory fats and Omega 3’s needs to be balanced to reduce the body’s overall inflammation levels.
Although it takes time, with rest and nourishment from bone broth, hyaluronic acid, and omega 3 fats our joints do repair and rebuild themselves without surgery or anti-inflammatory medications. A little care from the inside will help ensure you live your life in freedom from joint pain.

Your teeth have a lot to tell you about the overall health of your body.
Your mouth/body connection is a lot stronger than you think. Your oral health can tell you a lot about what’s happening in your body. It seems like a stretch to think the health of your mouth affects the health of your heart and blood vessels, but it’s true – it’s been 30 years now since the link between oral health and heart disease was published in mainstream medical journals. And it doesn’t stop there – your mouth affects your brain, liver, gut health, immune system, and the rest of your body.
Every nutrient and probiotic you take in to your body comes in through your mouth, and it’s also the gateway for heavy metals, infections, and more. Choosing the right diet, supplements for oral health, and dentistry options are paramount to the health of your mouth, your immune system, and your body.
The Mouth Microbiome
Over 600 species of bacteria are living in your mouth right now, making up what’s called your oral microbiome. This mouth microbiome is one of the most ecologically diverse populations in your entire body, housing a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. All of these microorganisms are fed by the carbohydrates you eat. Salivary amylase is the digestive enzyme in the mouth that breaks down carbohydrates into the sugars your microbiome uses for fuel. Unlike other digestive enzymes, the amount of salivary amylase you make does not decrease with age – as long as you are salivating, you will have this important enzyme.
Scientists have come to understand that dental caries (cavities) in your teeth are caused by a biofilm, which is a collection of potentially harmful bacteria that coat the surface of the tooth and cause decay. Cavities are a bacterial infection. The building up and tearing down of enamel on the surface of the tooth is a normal physiological process that is ongoing, but when the biofilm is out of balance, there is more tearing down than building up and tooth decay is the result. Your gums also have a biofilm on them, and periodontal disease is the bacterial infection that results from a disruption in gum bacterial balance.
The answer to these infections is not to kill off all your bacteria with antibiotics and antibacterial mouthwashes, but to cut out processed foods, sugars, and fruit juices, and re-balance the microbiome with oral probiotics and traditional fermented foods like unpasteurized sauerkraut. In a sense, better oral health can indicate better overall health. My probiotic of choice is UNI KEY Health’s Flora-Key, which contains lactobacillus reuteri, a healthy bacteria shown in studies to fight the harmful strains that cause tooth decay and bad breath. When it comes to choosing probiotics, the magic number is 10 billion CFUs (Colony Forming Units); any more than this can interfere with immune function, so more is not necessarily better in this case. I enjoy the light sweetness of Flora-Key and sprinkle it on my food, which is a great way to bathe the mouth in these healthy bacteria.
Hidden Dental Infections
Teeth are a living tissue; although they seem solid, they are porous, with fluid constantly flowing through them to cleanse all the layers of the tooth. This creates the environment for the microbiome to live in. When the infection from tooth decay reaches the root of the tooth, the choices are to do a root canal or have the tooth extracted (pulled out). Both of these choices can lead to hidden infections near the bone, which leads to systemic disease in your body.
Weston A. Price was a 20th century dentist who did extensive research on the impact of dental infections on the body. As one of his experiments, he took a tooth with a root canal from a patient who had recently died of a heart attack. He embedded the tip of this tooth under the skin of a rabbit. That rabbit died of a heart attack. He then repeated this with a total of 100 rabbits and all of them died of heart attacks shortly after the tooth was implanted under their skin. His findings were published in 1910, but the American Dental Association continues to state the root canal procedure is safe even today.
The tooth Dr. Price used looked healthy, but hidden infection was present. A tooth with a root canal no longer has fluid flowing through it, which allows unhealthy bacteria to grow deep inside, near the bone. The tooth is essentially dead with no oxygen flowing through it, and this provides the perfect environment for a long term, low-grade infection to persist. This can contribute to autoimmune disease. These infections also travel to other parts of the body, like the heart, which is a known cause of heart disease and heart attack.
Cavitations are infections of unhealed bone where a tooth has been extracted. If the tooth cavity is not cleaned thoroughly and the periodontal ligament isn’t removed when the tooth is removed, the infection that caused the tooth decay moves into unhealed bone, and can even form a cyst that is a potent source of infection. These hidden infections are hard to find; they occasionally show up on an x-ray, but more commonly they’re found by a biologic dentist who knows what to look for.
The best treatment I’ve found for these hidden infections is ozone therapy. Once the root canal is removed or the cavitation is cleared, ozone injections are administered by a trained dentist to kill the remaining bacteria. My experience with this has been a positive one. I had a cavitation I was completely unaware of, and my excellent dentist was able to find it and treat it effectively with ozone.
Heavy Metals in the Mouth
When you have a cavity, the dentist uses“silver” fillings as the material of choice. This filling material became popular because the 50% mercury content in it immediately killed the nerve pain, making it much more comfortable to eat afterward. However, as we know, mercury is a potent neurotoxin, which is mobilized throughout the body when you chew or drink hot liquids. There’s another problem with these fillings though, which started in 1975. The American Dental Association claimed adding a high copper content to the mercury amalgam created a “state of the art” filling material, which released no mercury. However, European studies showed this new compound caused mercury to be released 50 times more than the previous amalgam material, and the prevalence of autoimmune diseases skyrocketed.
If you have mercury amalgams in your mouth, I highly encourage you to have them removed and replaced with a composite material. Taking a scoop of UNI KEY Health’s Daily Greens Formula can help to gently escort these mobilized toxic metals from your body after the process. If you have suffered with fatigue, depression, anxiety, hair loss and loss of appetite, you may also have excess copper from these amalgams. I highly recommend doing some research in my book Why Am I Always So Tired? to learn more about what excess copper does and how to eliminate it from your body.
Your Mouth is the Gateway to a Healthy Immune System
Much of our ability to recover from any health problem depends on the burdens we place on our already overworked immune system. We talk about how important diet, supplements and exercise are to boost our immune system, but we don’t hear enough about what we can do the lessen the burden on our tired immune system. As a result, we suffer with a high degree of inflammation and feel fat, sick, and tired most of the time. Reduce the burden on your immune system by taking good care of your teeth; support your mouth microbiome, identify and treat hidden infections, and have toxic dental amalgams removed. Pay attention to your oral health, it really could change your life!
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you already know how I feel about tap water. But, if you’re new to my blog — yes, you read that right. There’s a chance your water is contributing to your weight issues. Sounds crazy, right? But, I assure you, it’s not. In fact, there’s a lot you probably don’t know about how your water impacts your health. My friend, Dr. Roy M. Speiser is one of the world’s leading “water experts,” and today I want to share his wisdom with you. Dr. Speiser has advanced degrees in biology, biochemistry, bacteriology, certifications in biomechanical engineering, water specialist and over 30 years combined experience as a research scientist and holistic healthcare practitioner.
Dr. Speiser, as we know, most Americans consume tap water on a regular basis. By and large, they are all led to believe that this is a perfectly healthy option. It is water, after all, which at first blush, seems a better option those most of sugary alternatives. But, we know better don’t we? What is your take on this?
“The notion of safe drinking water is a myth. The fact that your tap water gets a passing grade from the EPA doesn’t mean it’s safe—in fact, far from it. Our drinking water has become a repository for toxic waste. Agricultural run-off is flushing heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers into the environment which then seep into our water supply. Industry illegally dumps chemicals into the ground and waterways.”
Could you elaborate on that, please?
“Due to our country’s rotting infrastructure, water suppliers have had to add more and more chlorine, resulting in higher levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Disinfection byproducts such as chloroform have carcinogenic effects leading some to be EPA classified as Class B “probable carcinogens.”
New emerging contaminants have also made their way into our water supply, such as PFOA (from Teflon); flame-retardant chemicals; industrial agents such as PFOS, 1,4-dioxane, MTBE, perchlorate, and a glut of noxious drugs. Dumping by hospitals and pharmaceutical companies sends countless drugs into the environment that are finding their way to the tap.”
So, how does this affect the average American family?
“More than 250 million Americans are drinking water with unsafe levels of various toxic contaminants.
Based on research conducted between 2010 and 2015, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found nearly 50,000 American public water systems contaminated with hundreds of harmful chemicals, including arsenic, chloroform, drugs, and others. Of the approximately 500 contaminants tested, they detected a whopping 267 in US drinking water supplies. (Click here for EWG’s Interactive map to see what’s lurking in your local water supply.)
An ongoing Associated Press investigation detected 46 different pharmaceuticals in the US drinking water supply, exposing more than 41 million people to antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, anticoagulants, sex hormones, and the list goes on.
It’s been 20 years since the EPA last passed any new drinking water regulations, and only a meager 8 percent of violations are enforced. In terms of water quality, the US is approaching “Third World” conditions.”
What does this mean for Americans when it comes to health and wellness?
“Cancer-causing chemicals in our drinking water are of grave concern, but the damage to your health is not limited to cancer. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can wreak havoc on your hormones, compromise your thyroid, and make you pack on the pounds. Fluoride is a prime example.
Fluoride is a neurotoxin and an endocrine disruptor and has no benefits for the body. Despite a mountain of evidence about its health-destroying effects, about 75 percent of the US population still receives fluoridated water. Most developed countries do not fluoridate their water—and for good reason. Fluoridated countries do not enjoy less tooth decay than non-fluoridated countries.
Water suppliers are now using more toxic forms of fluoride, such as hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFSA) or even aluminum fluoride. HFSA is a poisonous pale-yellow liquid that is corrosive enough to etch glass.
Fluoride can lead to weight gain and obesity by blocking the iodine receptors in your thyroid gland, which impedes your body’s synthesis of thyroid hormone. Fluoride is such a potent suppressor of the thyroid that it was actually used to treat hyperthyroidism up until the 1950s!”
But, Americans have long been taught that fluoride is a good thing – and beneficial to our children and their oral health. Are you saying we’re unwittingly harming our health? What else does fluoride do?
“Just like other halogens, fluoride can hasten the development of thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), as well as autoimmune thyroiditis. Research to date suggests fluoride exposure may be driving up the prevalence of diabetes in this country. Fluoride exposure can also damage the brain. Babies exposed to fluoridated water in-utero via the mother show grossly abnormal brain development. These mothers drank fluoridated water that was within “safe guidelines” as set by the EPA—the same water we drink today. A recent study involving Mexican women found that children with prenatal fluoride exposure have lower IQs.
The dots have also been connected between fluoride and Alzheimer’s disease and several forms of cancer (uterine, respiratory, bone, and oral). Fluoride demineralizes bone, promoting skeletal fluorosis or bone destruction. Sadly, the list goes on.
When it comes to crimes against your thyroid, fluoride does not act alone. Firm evidence exists that PCBs, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), brominated flame retardants, and perfluorinated chemicals also damage the thyroid, and all of these are making their way into our tap water.”
All that would mean that, quite literally, the water we drink on a daily basis may be contributing to weight gain?
“When it comes to weight loss resistance, the estrogen-mimicking chemicals in your drinking water can really do a number on you. Estrogenic compounds are so notorious for causing weight gain that they’re referred to as “obesogens.” These compounds are ubiquitous today from plastic products, processed foods, drugs such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants, and many other sources.
Although oral contraceptives have been accused of being a major source of synthetic estrogens in our water supply, they are actually not the primary source, according to findings from the University of California San Francisco. Researchers determined that far more significant sources are chemicals arising from the conventional agricultural industry—herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, drugs fed to livestock, and so on.”
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about what’s lurking in our water?
“Atrazine is the second most commonly used herbicide in the US and one of the most prevalent in drinking water—one in six Americans are estimated to be drinking atrazine-contaminated water. Atrazine is linked to infertility, a variety of birth defects, several cancers (including ovarian and thyroid), mitochondrial dysfunction, and weight gain.
Any one of the above EDCs would be cause enough for concern, but an even greater problem is cumulative toxicity. With the Environmental Working Group’s study finding 267 different chemicals in the nation’s water supply, it’s clear that people are not being exposed to just one chemical at a time. The science to date confirms that chemical mixtures often have dose-additive effects in the human body.
For example, combinations of EDCs such as phthalates and pesticides are able to produce significant effects, even when each chemical is present at a low enough level to not individually produce a measurable effect. A 2016 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives was the first to show a strong association between combinations of EDCs and breast cancer risk. Another study showed a similar link between exposure to multiple EDCs and disrupted reproductive development in male rats.
We have no real data about the potentially far-reaching effects of all these toxic chemicals in our water supply—and we haven’t even talked about those in our air, food, and household products.”
In your opinion, how should we address this situation? What is the solution?
“If you want to achieve a healthy weight and avoid a thyroid slowdown, you simply cannot drink toxic water. Effective water filtration is critically important if you are challenged with any serious health condition.
In attempting to navigate the maze of misinformation, millions of consumers are buying filters that are entry-level, or minimal, filters such as pour-through pitchers and refrigerator or faucet filters. These devices are not capable of removing the wide array of contaminants found in today’s drinking water. They may reduce small amounts of chlorine, lead, bad taste and odor, but when it comes to fluoride, parasites, heavy metals, chloramine, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals, they are simply not up to the task.
The best protection requires a multi-barrier filtration system that can effectively eliminate even the smallest particles from your water. When it comes to water filters, there is no one-size-fits-all. Different contaminants require different filtration technologies. For example, THMs and pharmaceuticals are best removed by special carbons. Reverse osmosis is good for metals but not effective for industrial chemicals. Ceramics are best for parasites, which chlorine does not kill.
The most effective system is a filtration tank on the main pipe containing different filtration materials to remove industrial chemicals, chlorine, DBPs, and start the process of removing heavy metals. If your water evaluation showed special contaminants, specialized filters can be added.
The next step in the treatment chain is to add filtration at the sink, which removes additional contaminants such as fluoride, bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, and special toxins. In an apartment, a shower filter removes free chlorine—not the ammonia part, but the chlorine, which is a major factor in the formation of disinfection byproducts. A multistage system is so effective that by the time your water reaches the tap, the contaminants are essentially non-detectable.
When it comes to choosing a system, my advice is to purchase the best filter you can afford with the latest filtration technology for handling the more challenging contaminants, including fluoride. My favorite new technology is MetalgonTM, which utilizes a combination of top quality activated carbon plus other superior adsorbent materials, melded into a solid block with a dense, high-performance pore structure.
It is time we stop taking our water for granted. The water we drink today sets the stage for our health tomorrow. Chronic disease rates, as well as the obesity epidemic, suggest we are in dire need of a course correction. Without responsible and effective solutions, the cost of water will become prohibitively expensive to the average family, who will then end up paying the price with their health. You alone are the one who must safeguard your family’s health by taking steps to improve the water quality in your home.”
This subject literally applies to every single American, young and old. That’s why my partners at UNI KEY Health offer a number of options for ensuring your water is safe and healthy.

If winter has you feeling down and cravings carbs, there are natural solutions that can help.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it can be hard to leave the comfort of your warm bed in the morning. But for some it goes beyond this, into the Winter Blues, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). If you feel tired, depressed, anxious, and lethargic only in the winter months, then you may be among the 20 percent of US adults who suffer with some form of winter depression. Overeating carbs and gaining weight are also common in this disorder, where 4 out of 5 sufferers are women.
While scientists don’t know what causes it, the good news is there are natural therapies that work well to fight the fatigue and boost your mood.
Shedding Some Light on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Even though scientists don’t agree on what causes SAD, most of their theories revolve around one main factor – lack of sunlight. When the sun is shining, the light hits the retina at the back of the eye and messages are sent to the hypothalamus – the area of the brain responsible for appetite, sleep, temperature, mood, and sex drive. When we are exposed to less sunlight, these functions slow down. The amount of light you need to maintain your moods may vary from person to person, which explains why some people get depressed while others don’t.
We also know people with SAD have lower levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter considered the “feel good” chemical. When serotonin levels are normal, our general sense of wellbeing increases, cravings are controlled, and we feel full faster when we eat. This lower level of serotonin is thought to come from the input from the hypothalamus, in response to lower levels of light.
Another area of the brain affected by light is the pineal gland. This gland produces melatonin when we are exposed to darkness, causing us to sleep. The increase in darkness during the winter months triggers an increase in the release of melatonin, which causes us to sleep more. Even people without winter depression sleep more, though it doesn’t appear to affect everyone’s moods the same way. The difference seems to be in how it affects your body’s internal clock, known as your circadian rhythm. Your body’s internal clock uses sunlight to time important functions, like your sleep-wake cycles. In people with SAD, it seems their circadian rhythm has been disrupted, causing the desire to sleep during daylight hours.
Light Up Your Life
The most natural remedy for Seasonal Affective Disorder is to increase exposure to light. Studies show that increasing daily exposure to bright, full spectrum light in the morning decreases melatonin levels. Start by taking a walk in natural sunlight in the morning hours for at least 20 minutes. The exercise increases serotonin levels, while the morning light stimulates normal circadian rhythms and lowers melatonin levels. Make sure you aren’t wearing sunglasses so the light can reach the retina and stimulate the hypothalamus.
In many parts of the world, sunlight is a rare commodity during the winter months. Full spectrum light boxes have traditionally been recommended for use during winter months, and while I agree with their effectiveness, a new solution, which is also anti-aging, has caught my attention. Near Infrared (NIR) sauna combines the benefits of phototherapy (light therapy) with heat therapy. NIR also helps your body detox and repair at the cellular level, similar to how plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue. I recommend Sunlighten 3-in-1 Saunas, which combine NIR, MIR and FIR and all their healing properties together. Exclusively for my readers, Sunlighten is offering free shipping on any sauna purchase through February 28, 2018.
Unfortunately, incandescent light bulbs are a thing of the past, and gas discharge lights (limited spectrum fluorescents) are becoming more common. Replace those compact fluorescents with full spectrum lighting wherever possible, or halogen bulbs if full spectrum isn’t available. Be sure to dispose of those fluorescent bulbs per your city regulations, because they do contain mercury, a potent neurotoxin.
You Are Not Deficient in Prozac
While some people find relief through pharmaceutical antidepressants, the side effects can be overwhelming and they don’t get to the root cause of the depression. When it comes to seasonal depression, my go-to is Ultra H-3 from UNI KEY Health. This supplement is based on the original Gerovital H3 (GH-3) formula by cardiologist Ana S. Aslan, MD, developed more than 60 years ago. Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society in 1973 showed that GH-3 relieves depression by inhibiting MAO, an enzyme that blocks serotonin and other brain chemicals essential for our vitality and wellbeing. I recommend 1 to 2 pills in the morning, followed by another 1 to 2 pills in the afternoon before 4pm.
If sleep is your number one issue when it comes to SAD, then taking melatonin at night and limiting exposure to blue light from your electronic devices may be effective for you. By taking 3 to 6 mg of melatonin at your normal bedtime, then using light therapy upon waking, you reinforce your body’s normal circadian rhythms and can reset your internal clock.
Glycine is the best-kept secret when it comes to brain health. Glycine is an amino acid and a neurotransmitter. During depression, glycine levels have been found to be low while taurine levels are high. Glycine is present in high amounts in Whey Protein Powder and bone broth. Natural, grass-fed gelatin is also high in glycine. When supplementing, I recommend 2,000 to 3,000mg of glycine in the form of TMG (trimethylglycine).
If you are suffering from the Winter Blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder, try going for a walk outside in the mornings, taking a 30 minute sauna in your Sunlighten 3-in-1, supplementing with Ultra H-3 and glycine, and taking melatonin at bedtime while limiting nighttime exposure to electronic devices for renewed vitality and lighter moods. Springtime and longer days will be here before you know it.

One out of every five adults has come down with the flu this season.
This year’s flu season is being touted as the worst in almost a decade, since the 2009 swine flu pandemic. As a result, droves of people want to know how to prevent the flu. The predominant strain this year is the Hong Kong flu, which has been documented for at least 50 years and is known to be one of the more virulent strains. Because I faithfully take Para-Key and Time-C, I don’t expect to come down with it, but here’s what I would do if I did have the flu.
Influenza is a virus. Viruses are different from bacteria, in that bacteria attach themselves to the outside of a cell, while viruses inject themselves into the cell. Antibiotics are lifesavers when it comes to bacterial infections, because the bacteria can be targeted without harming the inside of the cell. Viruses, on the other hand, don’t respond to antibiotics. They are housed safely inside of your cell, where antibiotics can’t reach without destroying the cell.
Viruses cannot multiply without a host cell. Because of this, the most effective flu fighters and preventatives focus on strengthening cells and their membranes. A healthy cell is like a fortress that doesn’t allow a virus to invade.
An Ounce of Prevention – How to Prevent the Flu
First, common sense measures to avoid exposure are the easiest to start with. The flu virus enters in through your eyes, nose or mouth. So, if someone with the flu sneezes or coughs and the infected droplets are breathed in through your nose or mouth, you’ve just been exposed to the flu. If those infected droplets land on a surface where you rest your hand and then rub your eye with that hand, that’s also a flu exposure.
As much as possible, avoid crowds and areas where people with the flu may go. Reschedule preventative visits with your doctor until flu season has passed; if you need something from the pharmacy, use the drive thru or have it mailed to your home. After shopping, wash hands thoroughly. These things are especially important if your immune system is already compromised. Remember, more than one strain of the flu circulates every season, so it is possible to catch another type while your immune system is already down.
Alkalinize Your Cells
If you really want to know how to prevent the flu, it’s time to think about your alkalinity. The optimal pH for the flu to inject itself into a cell is 5.0, which is acidic. You can safely assume if you have the flu that your cellular pH is acidic. My favorite remedy to correct your cellular pH is my cran water, and you can find out more about the amazing cranberry and the recipe for cran water here.
Another great strategy is a detox bath. This is a therapeutic bath that was recommended by my mentor, the grand dame of alternative medicine, Dr. Hazel Parcells, who lived to the ripe old age of 106. She was an advisor to the Oppenheim team in the early 1940s. This particular bath has been used for over 25 years by my students, followers and readers. Don’t take more than one bath a day, and don’t mix the formulas.
The salt and soda bath is quite relaxing and very simple to implement:
Run a tub to the hottest temperature you can manage. Dissolve 1 pound of salt (table salt – NOT Epsom salts) and 1 pound of baking soda in the water, and begin to soak.
Sip a glass of warm water mixed with ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda for internal pH balance to counter the flu’s acidity.
Get out of the bath when the water is cool. Don’t shower for at least four hours.
Glutathione has been called the master antioxidant, and is a strong supporter of both the liver and lungs. Because the flu targets the lungs, it’s important to keep them strong and healthy. My favorite supplement for this is N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC). A dose of 600mg twice daily during the flu also decreases the intensity of flu symptoms and the length of the flu. This study showed in elderly patients who took NAC, 25% came down with influenza-like symptoms as compared to 79% who did not take NAC. If you are already concerned for pneumonia, I recommend seeing your integrative doctor and getting a prescription for NAC for the nebulizer, as well as taking the oral.
Cleansing Coffee Enemas and Colon Hydrotherapy
Another way to boost glutathione is with coffee enemas. They stimulate the liver to produce glutathione while cleansing both the liver and colon of the cellular debris and toxins that are produced when you are sick with something like the flu. Many of the symptoms that come with the flu come from the body flushing toxins and by supporting the body in this important job you can reduce your symptoms and help the flu run its course more quickly. Coffee enemas and colon hydrotherapy will temporarily reduce a fever and keep your detox pathways open. One colonic or two coffee enemas per day may be all that’s needed to give your system a boost to fight or even prevent the flu.
Elderberry to the Rescue
When you catch the flu, elderberry’s immunity-boosting properties can reduce your symptoms and speed recovery. According to virologists, this antioxidant-rich extract contains a compound that ‘coats’ viruses and prevents them from invading and infecting healthy cells. In fact, elderberry extract has been shown to be effective against more than 10 strains of the influenza virus. In an Israeli study, 93 percent of subjects taking elderberry extract were symptom-free within 48 hours, while patients given a placebo took at least six days to recover. I suggest supplementing with 2 teaspoons of liquid black elderberry extract twice daily.
Fight Flu with Vitamin D
People with enough vitamin D heal from the flu faster than people with low levels of vitamin D. According to this study, people with vitamin D blood levels above 38 ng/mL recovered from influenza in an average of 2 days, as compared to people with vitamin D levels below 38 ng/mL who took an average of 9 days to recover from influenza. Vitamin D also calms the inflammatory response of the immune system to the flu, which decreases the rate of pneumonia and other deadly complications. I recommend 2,000 to 5,000 IU daily while fighting the flu.
