Addressing the conference, H.E. Dr. Matar Hamed Al Neyadi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Industry UAE, said: “The steel and construction industries in the UAE have matured since their foundation decades ago, as is evident by the incredible projects and mega-structures completed across the nation. This maturation presents a host of new opportunities for both sectors. These include increasing international exports, enhancing sustainable manufacturing and construction, and developing innovative smart technologies that will positively impact the steel and construction sectors.”
“Looking ahead to 2030 and beyond, regional investments in hospitality, healthcare, education and infrastructure are likely to continue on an ever-growing scale. Steel and construction industries are well positioned to take advantage of this opportunity to continue contributing to the region’s long-term economic prosperity and diversification. By investing in sustainable practices and innovative smart technology, the steel and construction industries will be able to maintain their historic momentum by offering unique products, services and solutions that will enable sustainable construction and the development of smart cities,” added H.E. “Looking to the future and the ongoing global decarbonization effort, the steel and construction industries will play a critical role in enabling the emissions reductions outlined in the Paris Agreement. As an industry, we have a great opportunity to work hand-in-hand with governments and international organizations to share best practices, enhance sustainability and develop cutting-edge smart technologies that will, for example, facilitate the construction of Zero Energy Buildings. This will allow the steel and construction industries to remain at the forefront of global economic growth for decades to come,” added Eng. Al Remeithi.

His Excellency Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, has addressed more than 500 local and international energy leaders and decision makers at Australian Energy Week 2019, which took place in Melbourne between June 11 and 14. His Excellency outlined Abu Dhabi’s programme for energy transformation and plans to diversify energy sources and promote renewable energy. H.E. Al Marara also tackled the opportunities and challenges facing the energy sector locally and globally.
The DoE delegation attended the event as part of an official visit to Australia that sought to strengthen partnerships and foster a greater exchange of expertise between the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and leading Australian government entities.
“The spike in global demand for energy is an opportunity to align efforts and increase reliance on clean and renewable energy,” H.E. Al Marar said in his speech, noting that having the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters in Abu Dhabi is testament to the Emirate’s efforst to cement its position as a global leader in clean energy.
The DoE Chairman also outlined the tremendous progress that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has made in the energy sector at the regional and global levels as part of its programme to transition towards clean energy. This initiative was launched in 2013 when His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, inaugurated Shams 1, the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant in operation. On the heels of the Shams 1 launch, work began with building the Middle East’s first peaceful nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi, which houses four reactors with a capacity of 1,400 MW each.
H.E. Al Marar highlighted Abu Dhabi’s dedication to investing in renewable energy, citing the Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Power Plant, launched in early 2019 to be one of the world’s largest independent solar power plant at a cost of AED3.2 billion and with a production capacity of nearly 1,177 MW. These projects are in line with the Emirate’s plan to increase its dependence on clean energy sources to 7% in 2020, then 25% in 2030, and 50% in 2050, H.E. explained.
Furthermore, the DoE Chairman’s speech underscored the Department’s role in setting plans for the energy sector in Abu Dhabi that align with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. This includes setting strategic initiatives to diversify and secure high-quality energy sources at low cost, which in turn helps ensure economic, environmental, and social sustainability. The DoE is committed to collaborating with local and international partners who are prominent in the sectors the Department of Energy is involved in, such as renewable energy, electric power, water, and district cooling.
“Abu Dhabi has an ambitious programme to promote renewable and clean energy sources,” said H.E. Al Marar. “Our participation in the Australian Energy Week offered us a prominent platform to showcase the tenets of this programme, and to introduce industry leaders from Australia and the world to Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s capabilities, infrastructure, logistics, and appeal to investors, underlining its geographic and strategic importance as a global energy capital.”
The delegation from the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy met with several officials from the Government of the Australian State of Victoria, as well as with representatives of various entities tasked with regulating the energy sector in the country, most prominent among which were Australian Energy Regulator (AER), the Energy Efficiency Council, and Australia Energy Market Operator. Furthermore, the delegates held extensive meetings with executives from major Australian energy companies, as well as prominent businesspeople and industry professionals.

In Abu Dhabi, Etihad connects its flights to and from Germany with destinations throughout Asia, the Indian sub-continent, Australia and the Middle East.
In addition to these services, Etihad has codeshare partnerships with Lufthansa German Airlines on flights linking Frankfurt and Munich to a range of other European destinations, and deliver passengers to and from Germany on behalf of other codeshare partner airlines.
Last year, Etihad entered a codeshare with German rail services from Frankfurt to four key German cities – Liepzig, Nuremburg, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
