As you of course can understand from the pictures the shooting was done in close proximity to the nest and was this year restricted to shooting flights towards the open sky (since I don`t like nesting pictures). The project was applied for and approved by Finnish wildlife authorities as one of 4 admitted European photographers. My whereabout was performed wit ..read more

Lions of Maasai Mara specialise on taking down buffalos. A medium sized lion pride will in average kill one buffalo every third - fourth night. Eventhough its a fairly common drama, you rarely see it in full daylight. Nikkor 400 2,8, f/2,8, 1/320, ISO 100 Maasai Mara NP, Kenya, March 8th, 2022 : My good friend Big John Siololo, Mr Maasai Mara himself, respected guide and skilful driver in MM over decades and co-owner of Oltepesi Camp having spent his entire life in the Mara ... told me that he had only ONCE before in his lifetime seen lions take down a buffalo in full daylight. As a humble visitor to this ecosystem you have to be mentally prepared for this ... because it will affect you emotionally ... no matter is you're hard nail or a sentimental wimp.  The story along ..read more

The seal has just brought the big cod to the surface ... alive D5, 600 mm 4,0, f/4,0, 1/320, ISO 3600 I had this extraordinary experience on the morning of February 1st. My house located in the dead end of the Oslo Fiord, "Bundefjorden", and is only 5 m from the sea. As I got out ... in the snow ... with slippers ... tho feed "my" seagulls (I feed them every morning through the entire winter, I spend a fortune on dogfood for them !) ... there was this harbour seal (steinkobbe) battling around very close to the shore ... with a decent sized codfish !! The fish was so big that it actually too ..read more

German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) "Of various reasons" I spent some time at Gran Canaria, Spain, in Nov / Dec 2021. A lazy life with great climate ... but also boring. I needed a project, but beeing in the dezert-zone of central Sahara there is little wildlife at Gran Canaria ! However I did see some cockroaches from time to time, and as I started to upgrade my knowledge on them my fascination for these dreaded insects took off !! Cockroaches thrive in the filthiest of all filthy corners, especially in sewage systems with optimal temperature and humidity conditions ... and they ofte ..read more

Nikon 200-400 4,0 /350 mm, f/9,0, 1/800, ISO 900 As some of you already may know : I have a big heart for snakes, and the reason for this is complex :  1) Snakes have a very interesting biology, 2) Snakes live a hidden and very secretive life, 3) Snakes are beautiful animals, 3) Many people have irrational fear for snakes and human cultures & religions around the world have given snake supernatural traits and finally 4) : Some snakes are dangerous and claim a lot of re ..read more

Heavy snow I Nikon D5, Nikkor 400 2,8, f/3,5, 1/640, ISO 2200 As photographer the Pandemic Life has been a bit difficult for me ... as I miss Africa, I miss tropical snakes, Spanish raptors & my good friends in Finland. It`s not always so easy to create new, interesting projects locally where I live ... but I have been so incredibly lucky to get to know this local capercaillie. He really saved my "photographic winter." This bird is a bit crazy as his hormones are going bananas with him. I have paid him many visits through February & March 2021, I`ve had him in low backlight, soft ..read more

Golden Eagle. A heavy snow shower is a blessing for any photographer Nikon D5, Nikkor 600 4,0, f/4,0, 1/1600, ISO 5000 My friend Leiv Arne Åkset runs a commercial photo-hide up in Marnardal in southern Norway. His place is well known for amazing sparrow-hawk photography in the autumn and as well as for winterly action with golden eagles and goshawk. I spent 3 days in his hide in mid February and tried to time it with white winter and snowy weather. One interesting option in his (comfortable) hide is the low camera openings from floor level. This can, if coordinated with vegetation an ..read more
