Outdoor Flea Returns — District Park Sunday
Providence Daily Dose

The Providence Flea will take over its new spot in the 195 District Park on the west side of the river this Sunday. You know the drill: vintage, artisans, and makers. And food and beverages. (The new site will be across the river from its previous location on South Water Street.) The Flea has also become a popular foodie destination with its rotating lineup of food trucks, bake shops and other purveyors. To add to the community atmosphere, local farmers and non-profits are also featured at each market. The Flea is always free to enter. No tickets are required. It is easily accessible by publi ..read more

RISD Craft Fair Saturday
Providence Daily Dose
by Beth Comery

The annual RISD Spring Craft Fair will be taking over two blocks of Benefit Street, between Waterman Street and Hopkins, this Saturday. Look for ceramics, furniture, fine art (2D and 3D), glass, apparel, jewelry, textiles, stationery, and paper goods. Selecting an image for these posts is always fun — the glass and ceramics are so vivid — but this year it was the plush toys of Sarah Evans (2006, Illustration) that spoke to me. I was also drawn to the fish rubbings of Stephanie Mason (1979, Textiles) see below. This is a good time to avoid driving around the colleges on the East Side. Last week ..read more

Full WaterFire Lighting Saturday
Providence Daily Dose

The WaterFire season kicks off Saturday night at sunset with the ignition of over eighty braziers, with onshore programming starting at 6:30pm. The first full lighting of the 2024 season is set to honor the commencement of RISD’s class of 2024 and celebrate the school’s reunion weekend. Has it been 30 years? In a recent mailing, WaterFire founder and executive artistic director Barnaby Evans recalled the sculpture’s humble beginnings: “Three decades ago, on New Year’s Eve, I welded together some fire pits, stuck them on stilts in the Woonasquatucket River, and set them on fire.” Those new to t ..read more

Patriots Court At Brown
Providence Daily Dose

This alumni memorial was dedicated in 1952 to members of the Brown community who had died in service to the nation. The inscription reads: “In memory of the men of Brown who have died in the service of their country since 1775.” The wreath consists of red roses, white mums, and blue delphinium (and was more beautiful without the ribbon). Patriots Court is a section of Wriston Quadrangle, tucked away west of Thayer Street north of Charlesfield. ****************************** Facebook 0 Twitter 0 LinkedIn Reddit 0 Email Print The post Patriots Court At Brown appeared first on Providence Daily D ..read more

Mako Motorcycle Plates Nearing Production

Time for you bikers to kiss the wave goodbye and enhance your street cred with a new badass shark plate. Put one of these on your Vespa Ciao and watch the other mopeds scatter. The Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI) announced Thursday that they had recently taken their 500th order for the commercial and motorcycle versions of the wildly popular mako shark plate, bringing them close to the 600-order threshold needed to begin production. Nearly 10,000 of the mako passenger plates and combination plates are already on our roads. For commercial and motorcycle plates, the Rhode Island DMV requires that ..read more

Homegrown For Unique Plants
Providence Daily Dose

Not everybody will be going to barbecues and beach parties this weekend; serious gardeners have other plans. Homegrown owner Russell Stafford was out in the sales yard today when I dropped in to survey the rare and unusual plants on offer this spring, and everything was lush and healthy. Russell propagates many hard-to-find plants, mostly from seed, mostly native, many shade-lovers. Some inconveniently timed construction blocked traffic on the street recently! It was fine today and there is always parking on Alfred Stone Road, so try again. Follow Homegrown on Facebook where he has great photo ..read more

Action In The Nesting Box
Providence Daily Dose

This was a first for me. I had been watching the four awkward teenagers preening and flapping when the father flew in on the left with a chunk of something for lunch. The young ones had barely had time to react when the mother swooped in, snatched the piece out of the father’s beak, and flew off. The four brothers appeared nonplussed as if they had seen this routine before. (I am guessing at the gender of the parents, but for the brief time they were perched next to each other, the one on the left was noticeably smaller, so I think that was the male. Plus, that’s the story I want to tell.) The ..read more
