The Harder and Smarter I Work, the Luckier I Become

It’s not unusual for a professional sports league to admit after a game and review, that officials made errors in not making the right calls. Some of these affected the outcome of the game, including playoff and championship games. Those calls and the results have never been retroactively reversed to my knowledge. The same holds true in our businesses and lives. “Upon review,” we find we were wronged, or not acknowledged, or misunderstood through  no fault of our own. There is no cosmic accountant up in the ethos with sleeve protectors and a visor in charge of rebalancing the injustice. T ..read more

You Can’t Prevent A Fire That’s Already Begun

People don’t seem to realize that it’s too late to take preventive action about climate degradation. We’re in contingent action now, whether we like it or not. (Ironically, we try to “cure” cancer instead of preventing it, when we should be doing just the opposite. We seem to have cause and effect pretty screwed up.) When a fire occurs, you don’t post more “no smoking” signs or se ..read more

To “anthropomorphize” is to project human qualities and traits onto animals, plants, and inanimate objects. Children do it to make sense of surroundings they otherwise can’t interpret. But adults do it fairly consistently, too, but for other reasons. (I’m discussing this with my white, German Shepherd, Royce, as I’m contemplating the next paragraph.) Please admit you engage is this, as I do, so that we can have an honest discussion. (I’m asking my computer right now why it seems slower this morning.) One net result of this mental pursuit is that it alleviates loneliness. It provides for a ..read more

Importance and Passion

Some things are important for the world around us, and some things are highly pleasurable and motivating. When those exist concurrently, we have a “calling” or an especially rewarding career. It doesn’t have to be lofty. Some people love carpentry work and construction, and it’s an important skill for society. Some are doctors and attorneys, or consultants and coaches. However, we’ve all met people in such positions who aren’t especially happy. When the job is important but there is no passion about it you have a “grind” or simply a “nine-to-five” job, or a “workaholic” attitude. When there is ..read more
