My newest solo exhibit, "Layers," is a modern commentary on layers of meaning, told in layers of paint.  New this year is a series of square sky paintings on cradled wood panels, framed in a fluted gold leaf frame.   "Love and Memories," oil on gessoed wood, 24x24"   As a young child, I remember lying flat on my back in the summer grass and gazing up at the expanse of the sky.  From this perspective, there was a visceral comprehension of how small I was relative to the panorama stretching out above me, giving me a sense of oneness with, and openness to, a universal presenc ..read more

"No More Pretending"   Every painter has their own individual style - a certain technique, approach, handling of materials, palette or subject matter which carries their unique stamp.  All of these elements combine to tell a story.   Sometimes the story unfolds over the course of the painting process, while other times, the story is clear from the beginning and is not as subjective or open to interpretation.  The true beauty in appreciating a work of art is in the power of the work to influence a viewer and inspire a personal connection through the story they see and feel ..read more

I hope you are well and enjoying this holiday season!   This has been an extremely challenging year for me along multiple fronts, and it has forever changed me and the way I view the world.   In July, on a beautiful summer morning, my son-in-law suffered a severe SCI (spinal cord injury) as a result of a mountain biking accident.   The Further In We Go   He is now a quadriplegic and has bravely faced a series of intense mental challenges and serious health issues which have slowed his potential rehabilitation. My daughter and two grandc ..read more

"The unexamined life is not worth living."  -Socrates   This past year has been laden with change and challenges that most of us could not even imagine coming to pass.  In response to the stresses and isolation that Covid brought to most of our lives, I found myself increasingly turning inward, evaluating and pondering everything.  A reclarification of priorities led to more time in my studio and working through the emotional backlog of difficult feelings that the end of cancer treatment and separation from vital family members brought up inside me.   Believe in Me ..read more

The following is a piece that I wrote for my 9th annual solo show at Kennedy Gallery.  Ironically, much of it still applies to my life today.   There are moments in my life which literally take my breath away.  I feel inspired, uplifted, energized, hopeful and renewed.  Many times, these moments follow a difficult period in life – one marked by struggle, sacrifice, and lost hope, of living less than optimally.   This work pays homage to those moments which have transported me to the other side, breaking the monotony and inevitable difficulties of life, and lifting me ..read more

Spring Tree Paintings

This past year has been especially challenging, and painting has definitely been a form of self-soothing for my anxieties.   I have been growing my studio practice by working almost daily, often late into the quiet hours of the night.  I fall asleep most nights with images of paintings in my head, sometimes even dreaming that I am still working to resolve a piece (no rest for the weary).   This spring, I was once again completely drawn in by the profusely blooming spring trees in my area. The paintings which emerged have a similarity to the deeply evocative and spiritual work o ..read more

I thought it would be interesting to go back in time and post a piece I wrote about my work in July 2019 for my annual show at Kennedy Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.   The Path Forward   “Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” -E. E. Cummings   My year began with an unexpected and serious health diagnosis that knocked me off my feet and led me to question everything.  Suddenly my life was filled with doctor appointments, endless internet searches, and overwhelming confusion ..read more

"Finding Solace," oil on linen panel, 16x20"   The open heart sees, feels, and absorbs the beauty of the world.  -Sonia Choquette   Living through a time of great uncertainty and change, many of us are seeking a sense of solace to restore a semblance of our former feelings of security and peace.  My show this year addresses my personal journey to create a safe haven, and each painting is its own self-contained source of sanctity and sanity.   Clouds are a continued source of inspiration as they are constantly shifting and changing in fascinating ways, often ..read more

Getting Derailed

I have not posted a new blog for ages, it seems.  I got derailed…in fact, I initially wrote this post in January.  My painting practice was also on an indefinite hiatus, with small spurts of infrequent hours snatched in the studio between other more pressing tasks and concerns.   For me, getting derailed means that I lost my practice of regular painting time in the studio, as well as my attention to posting on social media to stay connected to the painting world.  Being disconnected from the painter in me can happen for many justifiable reasons:   illness (in thi ..read more

"Turning Point," oil on gallery wrap linen, 10x10" (sold)   For the month of September 2017, my work was featured in my 8th annual solo show with Kennedy Gallery and Custom Framing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Entitled “Transitions,” this year’s show included more seascapes than in the past, as well as a smattering of my signature cloud-infused landscapes and a few close-up floral pieces.  Some unframed gallery-wrap paintings as well as a selection of mini paintings in eclectic frames were new products for my show this year.   My life is in the process of transitio ..read more
