Letting Go and Finding Your Yoga
Higher Ground Yoga Blog

I have been asked several times recently to write a follow-up to my first blog The Blue Yoga Mat, which was a glimpse into my early yoga practice and recovery and lessons learned.  I conveniently skip from that time to sharing my vision as an instructor.  What lies in between is a story of letting go. Sometime, a long time ago, after finding a yoga studio that felt comfortable and safe, I attended a “Recovery Yoga Training”.  It was at the studio with about 25 people in attendance from all backgrounds, not just recovery.  I remember my insecurity, curiosity, and almost obse ..read more

Hello Yogis! At Higher Ground, "How are you doing?"  is not just a casual greeting but a heartfelt inquiry. Our studio is a sacred space where we not only stretch our bodies but also extend a genuine curiosity about our fellow practitioners.  I write this as I am reflecting on the increased attendance of our recovery yoga class and all of the classes on our schedule.  It seems that many of us are seeking nonjudgmental spaces where we can be with others with no agenda and feel supported as we share the yoga practice.  I am humbled and grateful for you and your presence at th ..read more

There is no shortage of studies that prove the positive links between yoga and health, mindfulness and stress reduction, or a consistent wellness practice and overall wellbeing. According to the National Institutes of Health,  Research suggests that yoga may help improve general wellness by relieving stress, supporting good health habits, and improving mental/emotional health, sleep, and balance; relieve low-back pain and neck pain, and possibly pain from tension-type headaches and knee osteoarthritis… Help people manage anxiety or depressive symptoms associated with difficult life situat ..read more

True Freedom

The idea of freedom is one often tossed around. The dictionary offers the definition of freedom as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” But when it comes to the path of yoga — the quest for inner knowing and a connection to the interconnectedness of all things — the idea of freedom takes on more than an externally-sourced power that circumscribes a right to act or think. Freedom, in this light, can be thought instead to pertain to the internally-sourced power of self-truth and self-knowing. Only when we take the time to investigate our ..read more

Cheryl Spera’s Higher Ground Story
Higher Ground Yoga Blog
by Lisette Cheresson

When, after two decades in recovery, Cheryl Spera relapsed, it was yoga that helped her maintain sobriety again for good. It took her five long years of moving from relapse to sobriety and back again before she had the courage to roll out her mat, she says, and while she may have stayed sober without yoga, she credits the depth and meaning provided by yoga as integral to her commitment to sobriety.  “The sense of guilt, shame, anxiety and depression that I felt early in my renewed recovery was powerful,” wrote Cheryl in an email. “Yoga helped me process these feelings and continue to stay ..read more

Saturday, September 11th was not only the remembrance of 9/11, but was the day of the Overdose Awareness Day and Memorial Walk.  On this breezy and sunny day, we walked with TenTen Truth Yoga to remember loved ones lost to accidental overdose.  The banners of photos of thousands of mostly young people who lost their lives was a chilling and bold reminder that each beautiful face on the banners had families and friends who loved and missed them. The burning tears in my eyes and sickness in my stomach only reinforced my mission that day to be in service to the recovery community. I rem ..read more
