“The estimate that seventy-five to one hundred churches close each week brings an urgency to the matter.” – Eileen Lindner in Gone for Good I first read this quote and I had to stop. It hurt my brain, but it also hurt my heart. We’re part of such a small denomination that the thought of 75-100 congregations closing their doors EVERY WEEK seems rather impossible to me. And yet, I see the number of churches close. Yet, this congregation is also faced with the deafening battle that we’re not making budget every year for the last three years. That we’re struggling to find cohesion and mission a ..read more

Elvis Lives On! Boy does he! The Building Dreams – Transforming Lives First Christian Church U.S.I. campaign had a successful evening Saturday, March 23rd. The Elvis Experience Band came with a piano player, two guitars, a drummer, two backup singers, and well we all thought it was Elvis, but it was George Gray, an Elvis tribute artist. About 125 concert goes and 12 ROTC members were entertained for over an hour and a half of Elvis music. Elvis had audience members come on stage and he came down into the audience a couple of times. There were young people dancing down in front of the stage ..read more

Just the other week after church, when we were having our soup luncheon, one of the questions I asked everyone to think about was what their fears were for the church. The answers weren’t all that varied. We won’t be here There’s not enough money to survive Lack of evangelism Lack of young people There were more than just those four, but these four specifically were mentioned at every single table. But then I asked what the hopes were for the future. The most poignant one for me came from Parker. Parker is 8 years old now, and he’s kind of always struggled with church and feeling l ..read more

Nathan frequently tells me to get my head out of the future. It’s really good sometimes to focus on the present, and it’s really good sometimes to focus on the past. I’ve spent a lot of the last three years here learning about where we’ve been and how we as a church have been formed in our mission and witness. I’ve also spent a considerable amount of time in the last three years looking at where we are today. We have so many past moments of questioning whether or not we should stay open, whether or not to shut our doors and close as a church, and each time we voted to stay open and continue fo ..read more

The 21st century began on January 3, 2000, with the Executive Board meeting to discuss the church’s mission, “New Faith, New Life, and New Hope.” The dedication of the new Ministries building was held on Palm Sunday, April 16. Chris and Tammy McCoy were hired as custodians. On April 27-30, 2000, a very successful Rocky Mtn. Regional Assembly was held. Vera Hall was an inspiring, faithful Christian who had contributed generously to FCC for years. She died on Mother’s Day after a long illness. The Trustees opened a money market account at A.G. Edwards where funds would be liquid. In Sept. 2000 ..read more

As of September 12, 2023, we have $93,305.94 actual donations/ funds received and in the account at Edward R. Jones. The $111,910.00 pledged as of the same date includes money that will be received up through December 2026. The intent when the decision was made to Build the House for teenage mothers was, and still is, to give back to the Cheyenne community.... To GIVE our community a birthday present FROM First Christian Church to celebrate the 100 years of our church existence in this community. The intent is not that our church congregation would be responsible to raise all the funds -- but ..read more

Obviously, financial support is a major part of this effort and FCC has raised $96,767.59. Please don’t think that money is all you can contribute. We have all been given many gifts by the Lord and it is incumbent upon us to use them effectively. When I think of using and sharing our gifts, I am reminded of the commissary sergeant of the 23rd Ohio Regiment who wanted to contribute on 17 September 1862 as his unit participated in the terrible Battle of Antietam. He left a place of safety and comfort to help, as his gifts and opportunities allowed, and the 23rd Ohio was the only regime ..read more

First Christian Church has always been an involved community church. It has provided needed help to the community of Cheyenne, Laramie County and the State of Wyoming. We are not stopping either. We continue to donate tuna to Needs, a monthly meal to the Comea Shelter, and meals for Family Promise and other organizations. We'll be celebrating our church's 100th anniversary January 18, 2026. So mark your calendars. To mark this grand anniversary, we are raising money to give to a worthy non profit- Unaccompanied Student Initiative. The funds we raise will help to build a home for homeless teen ..read more

In 1990 the church held a dinner to celebrate the Centennial of the statehood of Wyoming. There were 30 members of the church who had been active members for 50 years or more. Two workshops offered were Financial Strategies and Beginning Country Swing. A computer was purchased for the office and the organ in the chapel was replaced. The Pulpit Search Committee voted to call Rev. Murray Frick as pastor; he began his ministry December 1, 1990, and was installed on January 6, 1991. Murray and his wife, Sue, were active in community activities: Little Theatre Players, Chamber Singers, and Murray s ..read more

Joy

Joy. I heard a video clip of Brene Brown talking about how the greatest fear out there is the fear of joy, and as much as I want her to be wrong, I’m not convinced she is. The scriptures tell us repeatedly to have joy in the Lord, and yet as a pastor and just being a person in the church and in the world, we’re often stuck in a cycle of pain and fear and trauma. Is joy really that hard? Remember that song from church camp, “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Where? Down in my heart!” We fear joy. And we fear it not just as individuals but also as a church group. We’re scared to ..read more
