Our Design Process: Furnishing & Styling

Understanding the process is an important first step to a successful relationship between client and designer and it all hinges on something that can be difficult to nail down — expressions of personal style. Every designer seeks to express him or herself through their creative work while also tapping into the client’s personal style and meeting their needs through the finished design. We want our clients to feel that their spaces are an extension of themselves, so open communication and attention to detail are the foundations of our work. As a client, your first step is to know your potential ..read more

We are very excited to reveal the main living spaces in our City Slickers project! Our clients are a young family -- they added a baby while we were working on the home! -- who decided to leave New York City a bit earlier than they planned during the Covid-19 pandemic. They purchased a beautiful, traditional white Colonial home in New Jersey, and wanted to give it a fresh, NYC-spin while maintaining the traditional East Coast style. The scope of our work was purely decorative -- the house has beautiful, traditional bones that we left intact, and it was done largely remote, utilizing our new o ..read more

Ideas for a Functional, Beautiful Mudroom

August and back-to-school time almost feels like a second chance to start good habits (or drop bad ones!) and finally make good on that promise to get -- and stay! -- organized. In a busy household, there is no space better suited to helping us with that than a mudroom. Meant to be the transition from outdoor to indoor life, they hold shoes, bulky outerwear, backpacks, endless amounts of sports gear, pet accessories, and often overflow storage for pantry goods or small appliances. The jobs for a mudroom can seem endless but with careful assessment of your needs, we can create a space where eve ..read more

Our Favorite Countertop Materials

Not only is the countertop material one of the biggest expenses in a kitchen, it is one of, if not the most touched surfaces in the home, and choosing the wrong material could be a costly mistake. Of course, there is not one right choice, and it largely has to do with your own tolerance for maintenance and patina. Today we're sharing everything you need to know about our three favorites. #ProjectCobbler'sKids | Photo by Stylish Productions Marble If you love the look of a Parisian cafe table worn by years of people enjoying their day as much as we do, you're probably already enamored with mar ..read more

We're back today to share the rest of a home we decorated for our clients, a young family that has recently traded their urban NYC life for a stately Colonial home in New Jersey (check out the first floor living spaces here). The house has beautiful traditional bones, so our goal was to furnish it stylishly, comfortably, and practically, and I think we nailed it! Primary Bedroom Remember how I've said in the past that our process begins in different ways for different rooms? This space is a perfect example. The custom upholstered bed became the jumping-off point for this room. Once that was fi ..read more

My Favorite Artists

I have a real love affair with art - sometimes I can't get enough of it. It's the topping of a room, the mood-evoking finishing touch. But often is can serve as the beginning - the inspiration! The world of instagram has allowed artists to emerge in ways unlike ever before, which I think is a beautiful thing. But remember there are also galleries all around the country who curate in a beautiful way. Find one with a similar vibe to you and you'll be happy with anything, I'm sure of it. I've never seen something I didn't love from the Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta. And the Artist Collectives are ..read more

How to Mix Patterns with Confidence

We are often asked by clients how we come up with our pattern pairings in a space. The honest truth is, half of it is just a gut feeling on the mix and trial by error. Creating a cohesive scheme with multiple patterns and colors is one of the trickier aspects of designing a space. When done well, it feels layered and effortless, but if It goes wrong, the space can feel unintentional and just plain wrong. Here are our tips for mixing patterns to create a space that is pulled together with plenty of visual interest. Establish a Color Palette We often start our designs by scheming fabrics for the ..read more

It's time for the first Britt Box of the year! Britt Box is a collection of seasonal accessories curated by yours truly that is designed to offer a quick, fun way to update your home. When the lockdowns first began last year, I immediately missed being able to pop into my favorite local shops to hunt for items to use when installing our clients' homes. Our clients and social media followers tell us that that is one of the most difficult layers for them to get right on their own, so we always reserve a portion of the full-service budget for that "last layer" of styling & accessories. It's easy to look at beautiful interior photos on Instagram and assume they were easily put together and executed. But, if you have endeavored to complete a room -- to say nothing of a renovation or new build -- you know well that's not the case! Whether you choose a smaller consulting role to help weed through a few decisions, or turn over the reins in a full-service project, a designer on your team can actually add value to your project. Here is how. #ProjectHouseOnTheHill || Photo by Raquel Langworthy Established Industry Connections Perhaps our greatest asset is simply our experience in t ..read more

Father's Day Gift Guide

Dads mean the world to us - they are our first real-life superhero, then they become our support system. Recently, I've been able to see my own father in a new light - caregiver to my mom as she fights to recover from a car accident. And my husband has shown how supportive and amazing he can be as he has picked up the pieces of our family so that I can be with her. Needless to say, he deserves the world and while I can't give him that, I certainly can give him a few cool things (or maybe all of them!) My favorite gift ideas this year to treat the special guys in your life... (And most you can ..read more
