Recognizing the importance of agriculture and locally grown food in 2018 the residents of Duxbury purchased a property once known as the DeLorenzo Farm, a 27.32-acre parcel that was a turkey farm until the late 1950s. It took a couple of years to purchase the land, select a farmer, clear the land, install wells, and make other improvements to prepare the property for farming, and by 2021 these steps were complete. That seems pretty fast for this sort of project—but actually, the project was decades in the making, completed with the cooperation of a farm-minded landowner and thanks to the hard ..read more

It’s hard to imagine that in the abundantly beautiful region of Southeastern Massachusetts access to local food is not created equal. While many of us can jump in a car, drive down a country road, and pick up a few things at a local farm stand, if you are living in a city it becomes more of a challenge: in an urban environment such as New Bedford, where do you get fresh and local foods? Eight years ago, a nonprofit organization spearheaded work on these issues by talking with the urban community of New Bedford. The larger question was where do people who live within an urban landscape access fo ..read more

Born during the COVID pandemic, Brewery 44, located directly off Route 44 in Carver, is an authentic farmhouse-style brewery. Mike Johnson, the proprietor, indicated that he was “looking for a new opportunity” and “purchased some homebrew equipment.” He started brewing and giving the beers away at the Upland Sportsman’s Club in Plympton. After gaining a little experience, Mike bought some large-scale commercial equipment from a now-defunct brewery in Worcester and started Brewery 44. For a microbrewery heading into its third year, Brewery 44 has developed an impressive number of collaborations ..read more

Black Hat Brew Works opened its doors in 2015 in the middle of the Scotland Boulevard industrial park in Bridgewater. Paul Mulcahy and his brother Scott first started homebrewing out of a shed in Norton. Time passed, experience was gained, better equipment was purchased, and the rest is history. An Eagle Scout, Paul came from a community of civic-minded people. “Helping out youth soccer, raising money for the food pantry, and supporting our local first responders are what is important to me, and what truly matters,” he shares. by Annie Sherman. Mornings are a bustling time at The Boundless Bean café in Bridgewater. This morning—in the shadow of a snowstorm and elementary-school drop-offs and college students returning from holiday break—its 16 seats are practically a revolving door of customers. A few employees behind the counter pour coffees and triage orders. The milk sputters in the steamer. An employee mops the floor’s wet boot prints. Meanwhile, more customers shuffle in, eyeing the coffee menu and the bakery case with equal parts hunger and urgency. The goal is not a quick caffeine rush and breakfast to-go at ..read more
