Godzilla is no stranger to crossovers. In his comic book appearances, the Big G has gone up against the Power Rangers, The Avengers, and even Charles Barkley. But this year will see him go up against a group of heroes he has never faced before: The Justice League. At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, DC Comics announced that Godzilla and Kong will be making their way to the DC Universe to face off against Wonder Woman, Batman, and, of course, Superman. Written by Brian Buccellato (The Flash, Injustice) and drawn by Christian Duce (Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point), Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. K ..read more

Third Season’s the Charm: A Spoiler-Free Review of Netflix’s ULTRAMAN Season 3

Ultraman has defeated many monsters and aliens, but he couldn’t blast COVID-19 with a Spacium beam. Last year, Netflix released season two of the CGI anime from Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts based on the manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi—and it was Ultra-manhandled. The six-episode season, which had been delayed by the pandemic, was a poorly-paced, overstuffed mess (You can read that review here). However, within days of its release, a third and final season was announced with an ominous trailer. Given Netflix’s penchant for canceling animated series after only a few seas ..read more

Review of Shin Kamen Rider

I almost didn’t want to write this review. For one, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Director Hideaki Anno’s most well-known and prized work, Evangelion. Secondly, his take on Godzilla also didn’t thrill me the way I had hoped back when I saw it in theaters. To top everything off, my theater-going experience was less than stellar. After waiting an hour past showtime the workers at the theater were finally able to start the movie only for us to discover they started playing Fast X instead. Eventually, I was able to see the movie I’d gone to see but there was a lot of pent-up frustration by t ..read more

The giant monster genre is currently experiencing a fascinating period of success, popularity, and experimentation around the world. Between the MonsterVerse and Japan’s continued output of tokusatusu productions both largescale (like Tsuburaya’s recent hit Shin Ultraman) and independent (with filmmakers like Minoru Kawasaki and Yoshikazu Ishii leading the charge), there are more kaiju wreaking havoc on theater, TV, and phone screens now than in any other point in recent memory. One of the benefits of a genre boom is the opportunity for unlikely players to enter the field and make a splash. W ..read more

Review of shin ultraman

Editors note: This is a spoiler review of Shin Ultraman which had a two-day release earlier this month. Spoiler Warning There's a moment in Shin Ultraman where the lead characters point out that the enemy monsters Pagos, Gabora, and Neronga featured similar characteristics. I giggled. I was the only person in the theater to audibly laugh. The original 1966 versions of these creatures were brought to life by modifying Toho's Baragon suit. Of course, they had similar features! Anyone close enough to this genre (i.e. way too close) would pick up on that. After all, this movie is another one of t ..read more

Gamera is finally making his triumphant return, only this time as an anime series on Netflix. The streaming service has released a teaser for what audiences can expect when it comes to the Guardian of the Universe’s return. The short tease gives us a glimpse at the animation and tells us that Gamera will face five different kaiju over the span of six episodes. With Gyaos already confirmed to appear, the question remains who the other four could be? While Godzilla has gone up against Mothra, King Ghidora, Rodan, and MechaGodzilla countless times, the creators behind Gamera have chosen to intro ..read more
