Last week, Get Tight Lounge in Richmond was packed for a sold-out show featuring none other than Dale Watson, the torchbearer of classic honky-tonk. The atmosphere was electric, and the crowd was buzzing as photographer Ben Lahoussine captured an unforgettable evening.
For those not in the know, Dale Watson was born on October 7, 1962, in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in Texas, Watson has made it his mission to keep the heart and soul of country music alive and coined his own genre, “Ameripolitan,” to distinguish his sound from the pop-laden tracks coming out of Nashville these days. It went from warm to hot real quick, but that doesn’t mean Richmond concert-goers are going to skip the outdoor concerts! It appears to be indie Friday with Mitchy Rich & The Coalminers headlining Friday Cheers, then that night Twen takes over The Camel with a few other indie artists to turn it into a pretty stacked evening. Then in the same spot on Saturday Night, Destructo Disk is doing something bizarre, and it’s hard to tell quite what.

As any exciting story begins, it was a Monday night and my plans had just been canceled. With the news of my new availability, I decided to take up a friend on an offer. The scene takes me to a familiar spot, a beautiful home across the river with a small lit sign guarding the driveway. In large letters, “Chilton House,” and resting below it, “Peter Jesperson and Tommy Stinson.”
Walking in, I find myself the youngest person there—myself, a fresh 21, and most of the crowd about double that (with a decent amount triple)—but we are all here in common cause and origin. We had our lives chang ..read more

There’s a lot of love surrounding Richmond rap legend Noah-O. Spend five minutes in his shop, Charged Up Flagship Store and you’ll understand why. The sense of community is infectious, connecting art and culture in a way that gives far more than it could ever take. From food and clothing drives to mental health screenings for youth and young adults, Noah-O and his team have become an integral part of the cityscape — true Richmond originals. All of which is culminating in this weekend’s Charged Up Fest 2024, a block party (running through June 2) that will “highlight independent artists and fos ..read more
