Thoughts We popped our heads up at Oxford Street and walked straight into a pro-Palestine protest rally. NOTE: The shooting of the images and the rally in no way represent my political views or my stance in any way. I'm simply doing what I always do ... photograph people doing stuff. Street Portraits - No Reason

Thoughts I don’t have a reason for shooting some of the Street Portraits I do. I’m referring to portraits of people who are often challenged in some way. Don’t get me wrong, my conditioning, or my ego if you like, is always at play, coming up with one cliche reason after another for capturing the images I do. “You’re doing it to shine a light on society’s faults”, or “these people are human beings and deserve to have their portrait taken as much as the next person”, and so on. What I refuse to do is hold on to any of these reasons. Anything I come up with would be a fabrication. You see, th ..read more

The FLICK Watch the MOVIE The CLICKS Check out the full spread of images below. It was a quick trip to Leigh-on-sea. Katie and I were meeting up with Jill, a Dare graduate, I only had around 45 mins to shoot the stills + my YouTube video. Challenges are great though and as I've said in the past any kind of constraint is a wonderful thing for creative growth. You have to innovate and think on your feet. You have to be sponteous and trust youself. I shot the day with my FujiXT4 and the 16mm f/1.4 lens. My main goal, as always, was to capture some street portraits. I hope you enjoy the images ..read more

So I head into town, London, to watch my brother run in the Landmark Half Marathon. I was buzzing to cheer him on and I also wanted to grab some stills and movie for my next YouTube video. Things went cuckoo, obviously, and I ended up missing my brother. I even chose a point on the map where I knew if I missed him one way I’d probably catch him the other side. Nope. I know, I know, it's terrible, but I was so caught up in eating cookies at Pret A Manger that I lost track of time. On the bright side, I did manage to steal some frames and some cool video for the channel. Let’s go ..read more

What are you gonna do this year?

WE DON’T NEED MORE INFORMATION I spend a lot of time talking to people about the Dare Photography experience. The reason I do this is not simply to make money. I could do that a lot easier by doing shorter one-day workshops. I do it because it changes people’s lives. Dare isn’t an everyday kind of workshop. It’s not more information. God knows we don’t need any more of that. And if we want answers … we can google that stuff. Dare is an experience. This is why it’s a tough sell. I don’t give too much away. I can’t articulate exactly what it is because it’s an experience and you can’t articulate ..read more

Street Portraits and Post Production
Lashmar Creative Photography Blog

So I’ve shifted into a new way of creating portraits that requires a little more post-production than I possibly did in the past. I’ve always been a little hesitant about over-editing my work and yet in recent times, I’ve fallen in love with the editing process again. It’s no longer the bad guy, or separate from the taking of the photograph for me, not at all, it’s as important as taking the photograph itself. Back in the day we never separated the taking of the photograph from the developing of it in the darkroom so why should editing on the computer be any different? I also think if ..read more

I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to upload this shoot as it’s one of my favourites from 2015. I took every single one of these photographs at my Dare Photography Workshop in Palm Springs California of February that year. Trigs and Olivia were the models you see. It’s kind of difficult to put into words how special this workshop was. It was special because of the location. It was special to me personally because it was a dream of mine to facilitate a workshop in California. It was special because I have my one year old son with me. Most of it was special because of the participants and n ..read more

Less is More - 9 Portraits of Misa
Lashmar Creative Photography Blog

I’m really working on slowing down with my portraits. I want a more refined output. I’ve started to post less and focus more on the quality of what goes out. I think one of the dangers in photographing weddings for so many years is that you can get into a hurried, machine gun, way of editing and working. If you’re not careful this can spill into your other work and life in general. This is contrary to my ideal of less is more. Simplifying and detracting from a scene is so important. I love photographing Misa. We’ve been creating together for around 6 months now and we quickly formed a a ..read more
