What do American deer hunters need to know about chronic wasting disease?

1. Where can a hunter have his quarry tested? 2. What is done to safeguard the meat until the test results are gotten? I would hate to spend money on deer processing only to find out the animal tests positive later on. Can the meat be preserved before butchering while the CWD testing is in progress? The threat of CWD seems to make deer hunting a gamble, not only to human health but to a hunter's savings account. A deer found positive could make the harvest turn out to be a costly flop. You... A friend and I decided to make the trip out to Ohio and try some bow hunting on public lands in the midwest. We both got saddle hunting gear and practiced in the back yard all summer waiting on the last week of October. We arrived at our Air B&B on saturday after noon and got to drive around a little to check out the area. It definatly was different than back in new england. We talked with our host and he told us about a spot close by that we would check out in the morning. We decided to... Read more ..read more

My buddy and I have 3 preference points. We are starting to look for a place to hunt. Some zones need 3 to draw and some need 4 points. So we are looking at 2020 or 2021 season. We are contemplating DIY, Leasing and outfitters. We would love to get in a situation sharing land with other hunters where we have a few groups hunting different years as we all draw tags. If we could get four groups of 2 to 3 guys all splitting a lease each group gets the land to themselves on the... Read more ..read more

My father in law has been going to Ohio for 20 years now for shotgun season. In that time, he has shot one 8 pointer, tons of doe, and a few small buck, all on state land. Well, after all that time, he shot a beauty this season. 13 pointer shot opening morning on state land with my Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70. I couldn't be more happy for him. I wish I could have been there to share that moment with him ..read more

Some of you have followed along with my ks trips over the past few years. It's that time of year again! We will be headed out early morning of 11/5. Pretty excited to say the least. Really hoping to see better age class this year. Ehd really took its toll in 2012. Been rebuilding ever since. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk ..read more

On my first Ohio bow hunt. Seeing deer, passed up a small buck, had a corker come in behind me two nights later, no shot. Lots of buck sign too, everything I hoped for. Except getting a trail cam stolen. Hunting public land so I knew there would be other hunters, just naively thought everyone has the same values. Cheap, older Tasco, but that's not the point! Day and a half to go, if that 4 pt comes back he's in trouble ..read more

How is the muzzleloader hunting in OH on public land? It looks like the last of the "firepower" seasons. Wife wants to go on a out of state hunt, so was wondering about Ohio. We would like to do it ourselves, not having the kind of money outfitters are getting. Any information on public lands and accommodations is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance ..read more
