“I’ve heard this NBS conference in Brisbane has an amazing lineup to explain it all. In plain English, too!” That’s right folks, with the evolution of the National Carbon Farming Conference to include the nature repair / biodiversity markets, this Inaugural Nature-Based Solutions Conference & Expo is shaping to be the best education, and inspiration, around. Carbon farming for carbon markets is now worth over $3 billion to the economy, and having gone through its ‘teething’ issues, the stage is set for a deeper, more comprehensive, and inclusive market. The famous Chubb Review o ..read more

Applications are open for the Queensland Government’s carbon farming advisory grant scheme The Queensland Government is offering farmers who wish to access carbon farming advisory services from approved advisors the ability to receive up to $10,000 as a grant. The good news is that CFA (Louisa Kiely specifically) is an approved advisor under this grant scheme. Having just completed our most successful conference yet, we are ready to assist farmers to further their education and aspirations in this space. Under this scheme, CFA can develop a whole of farm carbon plan f ..read more

“The best ever CFA conference” “I learned so much” “Really well organised with great content and speakers” Yes, we were blessed to amass some wonderful experts and put together content never before seen at the inaugural Nature-Based Solutions Conference & Expo. All designed to educate and challenge. And none too soon. While there is still discussion around when/how to use credits, there is simply no doubt that the agriculture sector is the ONLY one ready and willing to scale up the drawdown of atmospheric CO2e. AND we have robust, well-thought-of methods, backed by rigorous government com ..read more

But WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Having just had a large issuance of Soil Carbon Credits reported, another tranche has been issued! (AND we’ll have the project landholder at the Nature-Based Solutions Conference & Expo!) Soil takes its own time. We know that. Arguably there has been large scale neglect of what soil needs in a biological sense. We’ve ‘balanced’ the soils using NPK and other chemical nutrients, but neglected biological soil health drivers, like microbes and fungi. Another critical KPI for soil health has been neglected. It is widely known that our soils are depleted (in general) of carbon over a long perio ..read more

New markets – it’s about choice! And the claim.
Carbon Farmers of Australia Blog

You choose the breed of animal you run, for which market, right? AND make the claim – ‘grass fed’ or ‘fine wool’ etc. Why not learn to choose how you interact with the new carbon farming economy? The carbon farming and biodiversity markets are just that – new markets. Nothing more. They trade in new products – CO2e, methane, biodiversity, etc. AND the beauty of it is that you can participate in this market AND keep the product on farm. E.g., Let’s look at methane reduction – you are rewarded for reductions in methane, you improve productivity and you still have the ..read more

When considering carbon farming, look at your farm as a whole

As the sophistication of the new carbon markets grows, it’s important to plan for the future. We have already seen methods come and go. We’ve seen large $$ being made in the market, and we are starting to see some action around paying farmers for positive environmental management. But there is the future to think of as well. How will carbon farming evolve next? There is potential for doing more than just carbon. Or indeed, not doing carbon, but nature repair. And ALSO, the question of regulation. If there is no engagement with the carbon markets within ag, i.e., if it’s not a net gain ..read more

Can ACCUs be part of succession planning?
Carbon Farmers of Australia Blog

Farmers are free to negotiate terms with any service provider as to their preferred treatment of ACCUs. What if I want to keep them? Often the benefits of ACCUs are shared between a service provider and the farmer. Sometimes in income sharing. But farmers are coming to understand that there may be other structures /uses of ACCUs that are attractive to them. And why not negotiate? It’s not well known, but I have always thought that ACCUs could be part of a farming family’s succession planning. It’s not always easy to navigate who will get what when some members don’t want to stay on farm but ..read more

First large-scale numbers of Soil Carbon Credits issued!
Carbon Farmers of Australia Blog

After a huge effort over many years from farmers, advisors, and others, Soil Carbon Credits are a reality AT SCALE! As we know, the soil is one of the last great carbon sinks yet to be understood and built to its potential to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate. All while improving productivity. This has all changed with the news from Beef Central last week. As noted in the release: ===== “It has taken new legislation in 2011, three methodology changes from 2014 to 2021, strict compliance with the regulations and the courage of the early adopting producers to reach this ..read more
