Volume Four, Issue Twelve!
Funicular Magazine

Welcome to Issue 12! An even dozen. We can arrange each issue in a box just like donuts now. The mags are colourful enough. It would work really well! Funicular is better than a donut because it's more nutritious and you can enjoy it over and over again. Even sharing with a friend is more fun. I recently spent a week at a writing retreat in rural Saskatchewan. It felt nice to hang out with writers again. When they would share their writing with the rest of the group it felt so intimidating because they're so damn good! It's a helluva thing, writing. When it's really good you just want to lick ..read more

Once More, With Feeling
Funicular Magazine

Welcome to Issue 11. Has it been four months already? It must have been because I’m sitting here at this desk and Jeremy says I can’t leave until the letter is done. He is tough but fair. According to the Funicular website that I just visited for the first time this year, it says we published our first issue in 2019. That was basically four years ago now. Four years, eleven issues, one new office chair for Jason, a handful of new laptops for Jeremy who goes through them way too fast. Hey Jeremy, cool it with all the computers, would you? So yeah, we’ve been doing this for awhile. Although it ..read more

We are back! Did you miss us? Did you even know we were gone for a minute? We took a mental health break recently and we highly recommend you trying this. The lit mag grind wore us down a bit and it was just that small break that really helped us refresh and recharge. Welcome to Issue 10. This is a special issue because it’s the tenth issue. We have hit double digits! A big moment in the life of any prepubescent child OR Canadian Literary Magazine. We bring this issue to you while the world still insists on being the baffling ordeal that it is. People are going through a lot. Taking a break is ..read more

Welcome to Issue 09 of Funicular Magazine. This marks the final issue in our collaboration with the immensely talented Wenting Li from Toronto. We love collaborating with visual artists for our covers. We wish we could do more than one cover per issue. Wouldn’t that be fun? It would surely kill us. Let’s stay alive a little longer, shall we? This is our winter issue and it definitely feels like one. Sure there’s the content which might feel a little chilly and dark at times but we put together this issue in the very depths of some winter darkness ourselves, here at Funicular Headquarters. It s ..read more

It’s that time again—Issue Number 08 of Funicular Magazine! By the time you're reading this it will be three quarters of the way through 2021. In our part of the world, at Funicular Headquarters, we are very much ready for the pandemic to be over while many of our neighbours are being introduced to it for the first time. It’s a really fun place to be. The end of 2021 can come anytime it wants at this point. We are ready to move on. We are also ready for you to read this lovely issue we have made for you. This is probably as good a time as any to say how thankful we are for our volunteer reader ..read more

Welcome to Issue 07! Affectionately known to the editors as the seventh issue. This issue marks our first issue with a new cover artist (Wenting Li) and we are very excited to be working with her for two more covers after this one. As we write this letter it is nearly June and by the time you’re reading this, Summer 2021 will have officially begun. It feels like after everything that has happened to us all over the past year and a half that optimism is finally ready to pop its head out of the ground again like so many millions of cicadas. Is this even a literature magazine if we don’t regularl ..read more

We are a Factory of Words
Funicular Magazine
by Jason Norman

Issue 06 is here and it still has that "fresh off the assembly line" smell. We aren’t some artisanal literature magazine. We are a factory of words. We fly them in from all over the world and assemble them in our state of the art magazine assembly plant (MAP) with the help of mostly robots, with humans putting the final touches on things. As you can see, we are clearly losing our minds here at Funicular Headquarters. As we write this letter in January 2021, we are saying goodbye to Volume 2 of Funicular. Volumes are a thing you learn about when you start putting a literary magazine together ..read more

Issue 05 in 3...2...1...Go!
Funicular Magazine
by Jason Norman

Issue 05 is ready for you and it finally answers the question we’ve all been dying to ask: what has everybody been up to during the pandemic? The answer is: writing your asses off! We’re not going to lie to you and tell you that this issue is going to make you forget about your pandemic troubles (or troubleties as my niece calls them–Jason). There are a few pandemic-/COVID-/quarantine-related pieces in here, and they are excellent! This submission period we received more pieces than we ever have before. It feels like we just set that record, and now it’s already broken. The quality started hi ..read more

Four questions. Two serious, two not so serious. Our first guest is Funicular’s Volume 2 cover artist, Jenny Keith. 1 // THE SERIES OF PAINTINGS FUNICULAR IS USING FOR ITS COVERS ARE STRIKING IN THEIR COMPOSITION. THE ARRANGEMENT IS REMINISCENT OF A COAT OF ARMS, WITH EACH ELEMENT HOLDING SOME SIGNIFICANCE. WHAT INSPIRED THE SERIES AND, PARTICULARLY, THE UNIQUE LAYOUT? Funicular is using the rabbits from my "Seasonal Animal" series. I've created paintings featuring bears, foxes and rabbits, in each of the seasons. In each painting, the central animal is surrounded by elements that would be par ..read more
