National Cartoon Gallery: What now?

I learnt sometime last month that there was trouble afoot at the . And from the numerous phone calls I have been receiving since then, it seems that there is substance to the talk: the Gallery has closed down. However, there seems to be a great deal of uncertainty about what the future holds. Depending on who you talk to, there seem to be a variety of options and opinions for moving forward. Will it re-open? Has it closed for good? If it does re-open, can it remain viable? Will a new Board make a difference?  What circumstances led to its closure?  There is a link to a ). I've been struggling over the past few months with many competing interests and issues, leading - if you are a faithful reader of this site - to some neglect of news. That's not to say nothing has been happening (just the opposite!), it's more about trying to find time to attend to all these things. There's time needed to work on personal relationships (always a fragile environment, especially when I'm not always as "100% present" as I ought to be). Sadly, I'm sure my children (and grandchildren) recognise this. There's the time that paid employment takes away from said relationships (and the ..read more

I was asked at little notice – a couple of days prior – if I was interested in announcing the recipient of the I say "no"?! However, I was bamboozled. could I say? Inspiration arrived at 3 a.m. on the day of the ceremony! Here’s what I said (for posterity): “I’d like to relate to you all tonight a true story. You may think it’s funny, but it “There’s a cartoonist I knew who lived in Gympie. It was a time in my life where I was going through a little trouble in my relationship. He wanted to offer me some advice. “This cartoonist is now in his third marriage." (Knowing that would get their atten ..read more

Best Australian Original Comic of 2023

I'm typing this in the middle of assessing which Australian comic creatives will be judged the recipients of the , to be announced later in 2024 at the . My fellow judges and I are still in the process of making our decisions. It's more difficult each year seeking to find consensus in trying to get everyone on the judging panel to agree to, or at least be satisfied with, the selection of the eventual winners. Australia has/has had so many great comic creatives! It's becoming equally as difficult in the selection of the annual of the past twelve months. Especially in 2023. Given that I am the s ..read more

It's That Time of the Year...

A lovely cartoon from the artist behind "Iron Outlaw" 's Greg . This is a great pity, as the comic was when it appeared in the newsagents of the day. Which may mean, the book will have to carry all hallmarks of that less-than enlightened age. I was hoping a page showing the original artwork (perhaps alongside the published page) might have proved educational. But, alas, it may not be. Still, better to see the book in print, than never at all (as I was contemplating earlier this year)... (my acceptance speech for 's Ledger of Honour Award), my presenting it to them when I visited Melbourne soon ..read more

And that's not to mention something that I'm not even going to mention here yet... Something to do with a cloak. and my visit to Melbourne to both drop off the . And to talk of my present projects with an "S". And maybe that the problem: I have so many (too many?) things on the go. I do like to keep readers of this blog the opportunity to hear news here first, but clearly I am lagging behind. Maybe I ought to stick to the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words and just be quiet for a moment ..read more

I am, to say the least, totally overwhelmed by the support that my comic has received on (when I was working night duty), it has ... as I write this ... raced past 80% of my target goal in less than 24 hours! One of the two stories has been taken from of the reasons why you ought to obtain a copy of your own! Here's the link ..read more
