Max Emiliano Gonzales—also known by their artist name “GEMS”—can be classified as an activist, art educator, muralist, graffiti writer, printmaker, curator, and more. Originally from the Southwest side of Chicago, and raised in Latino communities, Gonzales came to Pittsburgh in 2012 to attend Carnegie Mellon University’s Fine Art program on a full-ride scholarship. We’re thrilled to have completed our project with the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). We’ve been working closely with CCAC and artists who have ties to the institution for months on a large consulting project, and we’re excited to announce that this project is a wrap. We’ve acquired many artworks from Pittsburgh-area artists, and they’re now up at CCAC’s Workforce Development and Training Center. TASC’s Art Handler Apprenticeship program is well underway. Our candidates are learning the necessary skills and gaining intel on how to be art handlers working within the art world.
