How understanding learning styles can be integrated into copywriting

I’m knee deep into writing a white paper at the moment and one of the topics included is learning styles. I’m sure the educators among us would know a heap about this and understand the many different learning styles that are debated. But I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t really thought much about it and had never really analysed my own learning style. The more I think about it though, the more I realise that as copywriters, we should consider different learning styles to appeal to various audiences. What are learning styles? Learning styles are a theory that proposes that people have a ..read more

7 small changes to make a difference in 2024

2023 has been a wonderful year for many, but I think we can safely say that on a global level it’s been pretty awful. The war in Ukraine continues, there have been an increasing amount of natural disasters that are directly related to climate change, and I don’t even want to get started on the atrocities going on in Gaza. In Australia the headlines have been pretty dire too – COVID-19 drags on (anyone else infected by the recent 8th wave?), cost of living is through the roof and those interest rates keep rising and rising. It’s enough to make us all feel pretty depressed. But it’s the end of ..read more

My fave parts of the Content Byte Summit

I was lucky enough to head to the Content Byte Summit over a Friday and Saturday in September. Billed as the summit for journalists, content writers, copywriters and other freelance creatives keen to futureproof their freelance income, it was such a great mix of content and chats and AI related learnings. I’ve reflected a lot about what my favourite parts of the summit were. Here’s a mini summary: Adding more value Co-keynote speaker Ed Gandia spoke about how offering strategy as a service can set you apart in the age of AI. He examined all the ways to add more value and charge for it. This h ..read more

What I’m learning from the Women’s World Cup (and it has nothing to do with football)

Photo: Football Australia Like millions of others, I have been captivated by the Women’s World Cup over the past few weeks. I knew the World Cup would be good, and I knew it would inspire my young daughters to love football even more than they already did. As soon as tickets went on sale last year, we bought a pack of Sydney games so we could share this moment with our three daughters. We were thrilled to be at the first Matildas game against Ireland. We also watched the Germany vs Colombia and the Netherlands vs South Africa games which were just as memorable and action packed. I never ..read more

After an action packed 2 day copywriting conference, the moment had come. The award ceremony. I was a finalist for 2 awards – Content Writer of the Year and Copywriter of the Year. I have to admit, I wasn’t all that hopeful of winning an award. The level of competition was intense – the other finalists in the two categories (Clare Hastings, Justine Northcott, Kirsty Russell, Sarah-Joy Pierce and Leanne Summers) are extremely experienced and successful writers. They’ve all worked hard in their businesses and I knew that any of them were deserving winners. Secondly, this has sort of happened be ..read more

What is tone of voice and why does it matter in healthcare marketing?

Regardless of whether you’re a doctor or a disability care provider, your number one goal is to provide the best care possible. You want your patient or client to trust you so you can provide the care and attention they need. Part of building that trust is making sure your communication is clear and consistent. That communication takes place in many ways. In a consultation of course or over the phone when they’re booking an appointment. It can also take place through writing on your website, patient information materials, emails and social media. How that communication sounds is ..read more

7 things I learned from the Australian Small Business Champion Awards

On Saturday night, I frocked up and braved the squalling rain to attend the Australian Small Business Champion Awards. I was a finalist in the Copywriter Business award and I was pretty excited to attend with some of my fellow Copywriting finalists, Melissa Gerke and The Rural Copywriter. We were placed on table 2, right front and centre. We could practically see up host Peter Overton’s nostrils we were that close. If the nose bleed section is right at the back of a room, I’d call being right at the front the ear bleed section considering our proximity to the speakers!  As we were so clo ..read more

2022 year in review

Wow 2022. I think we will all look back on this year with mixed feelings. It was the year things ‘opened up’ after lockdowns and for many, this was exciting to live life a little more freely. For many, that was quite anxiety provoking and meant making personal decisions about how much risk we were willing to take in our lives. For me, it was a combination of both. I tried to get out there, live my life and make up for the past few years. But now in December, it’s led to a whole new level of… exhaustion. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been more ready to take a break and recharge for 20 ..read more

What I hope for my daughters this International Women’s Day

I grew up in the type of home where being a girl didn’t seem very different from being a boy. Both of my parents worked full time in demanding careers and distributed labour equally. My brothers, sister and I were treated equally around the house and all had opportunities to pursue whatever sport, artistic, or academic interests we wanted. This continued on throughout high school, where my feminist girls’ school taught us we could do and be anything. Our accomplished alumni, including Nicole Kidman, Justice Lucy McCallum and Catherine Martin, show how important it is to give girls an environm ..read more
