Been boondocking at a small airport with a turf landing strip in PA. No hookup for 36 days so far, and haven't needed to run the generator. Solar is doing much better than expected ..read more

Solar Power Efficacy?

How effective are solar electrical systems in RVs? Presume they work best with a correctly sized generator for back up. Are they worth it or should I save the weight for more propane to power the generator? I presume the batteries can also be charged from the tow vehicle while driving...? Does the electrical management system typically tie in with the generator to recharge storage batteries as needed when sufficient sun light is not available? Thanks ..read more

Next week I'm picking up an Aliner Scout. All of the parks that I have found open in May so I'm looking for places to boondock. Logging trails, fire access roads, etc. I want to start out in my neighborhood, so to speak, before I head west ..read more

I can't believe it's not possible for us to boondock!

We have a 2021 Jayco Eagle 321 RSTS 5th wheel. According to DH the problem is that we can't store enough electricity. We have two Honda 2000 watt generators. We have a single AGM 105 amp hour battery. DH doesn't think we have enough reserve in order to keep things charged overnight. BTW we have a residential frig. As I said, I can't believe we can't boondock with our new 5th wheel. Somehow we managed to boondock with our old 2012 Cougar 5th wheel. Thanks for your technical advice ..read more

Inverter generator with CO auto-shutdown

I'm looking at buying a couple of ~2500 watt inverter generators with a parallel kit for an upcoming (this summer) trip that will include some camping in no-hookup campgrounds for a number of days (not true boondocking, but close). In on-line reviews, I find that the now ubiquitous built-in CO detect "feature" is a common source of frustration; constant shut-downs every half hour and the like. The manufacturer responses tend toward things like wind direction causing the CO-detect circuit to... Read more ..read more

How/where to empty my black tank

My RV is parked on my land in a rural area. I don’t own a truck to tow it or a septic tank with a cap to dump into. What are my options? 1. A waste service comes, empties it, and hauls it away. Is this a thing? 2. I drive a portable tank on a flatbed to a campground dump station. 3. I dump a portable tank into a makeshift barrel septic tank somewhere on our land. 4. ??? Thanks & happy camping ..read more

I am hoping to get a new forum started particular to Old Trailers that are 'tin can' type. If you are interested find the post "FIXIN' OLDIES" under "Trailers and Fifth Wheels", and weigh in. New forums are started according to traffic on any particular subject. I believe we need another forum exactly like "FIBERGLASS RV FORUM" but for old "tin can" types. Weigh in on the subject and hopefully we can achieve that. Ray M ..read more

We've just bought a 22' hybrid, haven't had it on the road yet. Because of this, on faccebook I got an ad for boondockers welcome, gotta love the big brother feel of the internet. I like the idea of staying somewhere other than a large campground, at least if I'm looking for a stopoff point on a longer trip. Two questions for those who have used this: If you're travelling to several areas and have filled your plack/grey tanks, how do you dump, are there public places to do so? Second...
