Hi Recently done a EICR Test and a full rewire was recommend, the house is semi detached constructed in 1930 and the whole side of the house has been extended in 1970, therefore some of the wiring could be new and some old, not 100% sure but the consumer unit is located in the newer extension. I have attached some images of the report and there are many C1's: - 1.1.2 Earthing arrangement - 3.1 Presence and condition of distributor’s earthing arrangements (542.1.2.1: 542.1.2.2) - no main... Hello there. I’m enquiring on behalf of a friend who has just taken over a small takeaway. Inside the place there is a plate heater (I’m not sure if the wattage but it’s quite large and similar ones online are around 2KW) that the previous owner had plugged in to a fused spur. **edit** He’s just told me it’s not a fused spur. It’s a homemade extension spur with a plug - about 2 feet of 1.5 cable - socket. When they took over the plug from the heater was all melted so they changed the... Read more ..read more

Securing back box in plasterboard

I’m replacing a dimming light switch with a regular rocker type switch and the orientation of the back box is causing a challenge. The lugs that secure the back box behind the plaster board are orientated at the top and bottom, apparently due to the plasterboard being undermined at the sides, meaning the lugs won’t hold the box securely in that orientation. Given that the lugs determine the screw position, this means the new rocker light switch has to be 90° out. As the dimmer switch was... Read more ..read more

Hi I cannot get this MCB to reset. I tried to rewire a previously blown power tool and it tripped the breaker. But now no matter what I do I cannot get that to come back on. I've turned everything off connected to the kitchen sockets, but no luck at all. Does that breaker need replacing? Thanks ..read more

Some of you might have read a thread where the OP was asking about cutting off a moulded plug tops from an oven. I personally had been advised before by a few manufactures, in doing so would invalidate the warranty, another member had been told the exact opposite. There have been other threads about the subject, in recent times, where the predominant view was cutting off moulded plugs would not invalidate a manufactures warranty. I have been told before that the warranty will not be... Read more ..read more

Hi Folks – I’m trying to solve two problems on a hallway three light circuit, where Lamp 1 doesn’t switch on at all, one light works find, Lamp 3 is permanently on. There are three light switches (with three core and earth wiring) and three ceiling lamps (see basic diagram), each having 2 core and earth cabling. Image attached of my basic wiring diagram. Lamp 2 works fine (it’s switch on/off by any of the three switches). Lamp 1 does not turn on at all (image below to show pendant wiring... Read more ..read more

New oven with plug, but got wall socket hardwired cable

Hi, Had an old integrated single oven that was hardwired into the wall with fuse switch by the kitchen worktop. New oven arrived today with a standard plug in the cable. I was thinking I should use the cable already coming from the wall socket and wire into the back of the new oven after removing the supplied attached standard plug cable. However, the pain is the wiring in the back of the new oven has crimps for connectors, where as the current old wall cable has loose wires. So should... Read more ..read more

How do I use this connector block?

A silly question I know but I want to replace the terminal block in my garage so I bought one of these - it’s where the 2.5mm cable enters the garage and connects to another 2.5mm cable. I thought it would be the same setup - a connector block inside a plastic case. No screws though, just seems to be a spring loaded connector. Push the lever down, insert the wires from either end then just let go. Is that it? Does it just grip by spring tension alone ..read more

Single FCU to Double FCU

I have a single FCU (Fused Connection Unit?) in the garage that provides power for the garage door opener, it has a 13A fuse. I want to add a smart garage controller to it that also requires power. Can I convert the single FCU into a double FCU using two modular FCUs (https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-13a-grid-fused-spur-white/29759) in the original box using a modular faceplate (https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-13a-grid-fused-spur-white/29759)? They would have a 13A fuse for the... Read more ..read more
