Last week, a member of the Puck Junk Facebook Group asked me if a Connor McDavid printing plate card that he pulled on ePack would increase in value if the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup. After thinking about it for a moment, I told him that his particular card would most likely not increase in value if the Oilers won the Cup because McDavid is a popular enough player – and one of the all-time greats – that his high-dollar cards will still be high-dollar cards regardless of team success. However, that made ..read more

Why 1993-94 Was My Favorite Season to Collect Hockey

Hockey Card Collecting was Less Complicated, More Fun 30 Years Ago It is the 30th anniversary of the 1993-94 season – and that was my favorite year to collect hockey cards and memorabilia. That was the last year before collecting hockey got so darn complicated.  During the 1993-94 season, the card company Leaf made its hockey debut with not one but two new hockey sets: the 440-card Leaf set and the 510-card Donruss set. What made the Donruss set so special is that it had the illustrated Ice Kings insert set and the Donruss Elite Series inserts, which was one of the fi ..read more

Should Upper Deck Change Its Redemption Policy?
Puck Junk

Topps Changed Its Policy. Will UD Follow Suit? Late last month, the Topps Trading Card Company announced that all redemption cards will now be valid for 10 years from the date of issue. This extends back to include redemption cards that were issued in 2021-22 products. Normally, a redemption card – a little cardboard “I.O.U.” that promises the collector a premium card – would expire after two years or so. This would take the luster off of buying sealed products that were more than two years old. Seriously, Bro…Do You Even Know Sports Cards? Back in March, I wrote about how Connor Bedard’s Young Guns rookie card was trending downward in value. I also posted the link to my story on X/Twitter…and boy, did that rub some people the wrong way! It’s still selling for mid 500s. Anyone who bought it at 1200 when it w ..read more
