I am note working on the car myself. I don't have storage space for another car otherwise I'd get the owner to have the car dropped off and try to remove it using a method like you are mentioning. I’ve heard gravity sometimes helps, on install to have the split in the C clip facing down. So in your case if it isn’t going rotate 45° and try again, then repeat. My S60 was a bit stubborn coming out, I used two pry bars at once to spread the load—wider the pry bar the better as to not risk cracking the transmission case. I have been asked for help by a friend with this car. He had it at a Volvo specialist and they said he needed a new LHF (AWD car) axle. I have since found it was replaced about 60,000 miles ago with an aftermarket one. The issue is they can't get it out of the transmission and have now effectively destroyed the axle so it could not be re-built on the car. I have heard of axles being stuck in the older P80/P2 models I am more familiar with, but usually they eventually come out.
