I’m sure you’ve learned by now, that I’m a HUGE rescue advocate, as it is part of my daily grind as I am the Director of GDROMN. A lot of people have asked me questions and want to adopt a Great Dane but don’t know where to start, so hopefully this helps you. If you’re local to MN/WI, or the Midwest states, then you can search through two Great Dane rescue groups right here! Great Dane Puppy Food

So, you just got a Great Dane, or you’re getting a Great Dane, so the first thing you search is “Great Dane Puppy Food” in hopes of finding exactly what you need to feed your new pup. Hopefully if you got your puppy from a breeder, it was a quality one, and they are able to mentor you into what your puppy needs to eat in order to stay healthy. Now, if they did guide you, why are you here asking? Do you trust that they know what is best? How can you trust to buy your puppy from someone if you can’t trust what they have suggested you feed them? I sound judgey, and I don’t mean to sound that way ..read more

Preparing for your Great Dane is a must! But I’m here to share that as you start exploring everything that you need for a Great Dane, you’ll start to find that XL isn’t for a giant breed, and often even XXL doesn’t fit the needs for a Great Dane. Hopefully I can help! I’ve compiled a list of everything you need to prepare your home for welcoming a Great Dane. Young or old, these are all great items to have on hand. While some of this is just my preference, I’ve talked to many and have other perspectives as well. Crate   Crates can be controversial but ultimately we try to train all of our ..read more

Only a 40 minute drive outside of the twin cities, Willow River State Park is a dog friendly, must see! I had no idea what I as missing all this time, but you don’t know what you don’t know. Here’s what to expect– Difficulty 6/10 If you enter the park in the falls parking lot (the first lot to the right hand side as you pull in past the gate) then you don’t have much hiking to do so its seems pretty effortless! However, that hill you go down at first… you have to come back up that, so as you are out exploring keep that in mind! So, where does the difficulty come from? On this one I chose a hig ..read more

Signs of Bloat in Great Danes
Dane Good Blog

The most common fear in Great Dane owners is one word, bloat. I’m here to help dane owners understand bloat in Great Danes. If you have a Great Dane and haven’t heard of bloat, torsion, or GDV then listen up, you’re gonna want to hear this. Bloat is one of the top causes of death in Great Danes and also affects many other large chested breeds. Bloat is just the conversational term but the technical term is gastric dilatation and volvulus. Often times people will just say bloat, but whether their dog has bloated, or experienced torsion is very different. In the first stages of GDV, many dogs wi ..read more

Great Danes and Children

I often get the question, how are Great Danes with children? Well I can tell you who I usually trust more and it’s typically the dog. Kiddos are super unpredictable and Great Danes are very sensitive to that. Great Danes can carry so much fear and anxiety depending on their background and children typically don’t help them overcome that. In fact, I think that children can cause more issues with the dog. I have some pretty intense thoughts but overall, here’s what you need to know about Great Danes and children. Do I feel that Great Danes can be good with kids? Absolutely, I just feel like they ..read more

How is COVID affecting dogs?
Dane Good Blog

This whole COVID situation is affecting all of us in so many different ways, and it’s actually quite insane how much that COVID is affecting dogs and their behavior around us. The months of March and April have seen dog attacks and dog bites skyrocket by 80%. EIGHTY. PERCENT. EIGHTY! What in the world is happening here? I can’t pinpoint what the issue might be other than perhaps lack of structure with owners being home more often than not, kids being home, dogs feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Perhaps dogs are feeling the anxiety of owners and uncertainty in the universe. Another thought is t ..read more

“We’re working from home, stuck at home, now’s the perfect time to get a dog” Said everyone who doesn’t already own a dog. However, I am very concerned about people getting puppies in quarantine. I love the thought of it really, I do. Dogs in rescue are being saved left and right, and if its’ a family that has owned a dog, or a puppy in the past, I’m literally so happy for you! If you don’t have this experience, I’m a bit scared for you. Socialization Such a huge part of puppy ownership is socialization. Puppies need to see other puppies, other dogs, other humans, people coming and going from ..read more
