I have a Windows 2016 server with 2x 2TB Intel P3700 SSDs + 36x 8TB Spinning Rust. They were configured as a tiered RAID6 using Storage Spaces (not Storage Spaces Direct) using code similar (but not exactly the same) to this: Bash: $ErrorActionPreference = "Stop"; $StoragePoolFriendlyName = 'Middle Chassis 36 Bays'; $StoragePool = Get-StoragePool -FriendlyName $StoragePoolFriendlyName; $PhysicalDisks = $StoragePool | Get-PhysicalDisk; # NOTE: Two of the $PhysicalDisks were marked... S2D slow write (no parity & NVMe cache)

With S2D I am getting terrible writes no matter what I try. This is not a post about slow writes because of a parity setup as I have my stuff configured as all mirror. It seems like the cache devices are never written to. At first I thought I needed to use SOFS but I am using this in a hyper converged setup and going by Deploy Storage Spaces Direct (Step 4) it is not required. I... I have one hyper-v server and then I install guests. It's for small business (software) Host is pretty bare-bone software-wise. The only installed software/configs is: 1. Dynamic drive mirror for VMs 2. Backup solution for VMs (Cloudbacko) 3. ISOs share That is it. Everything else (including file share) is in VMs Idea is that I can restore VMs pretty quickly while host doesn't need much configuration. How do you manage this? Do you add any other responsibilities to host ..read more

Testing out the Hyper-V role within Server 2022 in the lab, with it I've got a pair of storage spaces mirrored SSDs for VM storage but I'm looking to pass-through a SAS2008 device to a VM and hitting a wall. --------------------------------------------------------------------- $pnpdevs = Get-PnpDevice | where {($_.Class -eq "SCSIAdapter") -and ($_.FriendlyName -like "LSI*")} Disable-PnpDevice -InstanceId $pnpdevs.PNPDeviceID Set-VM -HighMemoryMappedIoSpace 6Gb -VMName $myvm Set-VM... Rebuilding a server and would prefer to use 2022 instead of 2019. My 2019 license key doesn't work. Is it possible to "upgrade" a 2019 license to 2022? I would also need to do the same with CALs. Any ideas? Thanks ..read more

Unable to get 10Gb speeds on Hyper-V

Hello folks! I've create a 2-node Windows Server 2022 cluster for Hyper-V and Storage Spaces Direct. Each node has a ConnectX-4 dual 25Gb. One of those ports are connected directly to the other node on 25Gb mode and is used for RDMA on the S2D storage traffic. The other port is dedicated for the VM compute traffic (Virtual Switch) and is connected to a 10G switch upstream. The OS reports the ports are on the correct speeds: Get-NetAdapter Name InterfaceDescription... Unable to get 10Gb speeds on Hyper-V ..read more

Feel like I stepped in dog poop. I created a storage spaces pool then decided I didn't want it. Now it's holding my disks hostage and I can't find how to kill it and free my disks. The problem is it's a primordial pool and searching for how to delete it returns nothing but gibberish. HELP !!!!!!!! Never mind. I found out how to retire a dive. Had to retire each one individually, all 24 of them, but it did free them. Never again will I consider using Storage Spaces. It's just another piece... In the next few months, I'll be migrating a Windows Server VM to a new ESXi host. Before I attempt this, I want to get your opinions on how this move/migration should be carried out. The VM in question has multiple services on it, and I have been considering splitting them between multiple VMs. While the current services function/perform satisfactorily on one VM, I wish to consider best practices moving forward. Keep in mind, this is for a home server (not a true production environment)... Windows VM Split-Up ..read more
