Hawke’s Bay golfer Mike Trass has won the 2024 New Zealand Seniors Championship at his home track to claim his first national title.
Trass conquered the record 240-player field, which represented 75 golf clubs and seven countries at Hastings and Hawke’s Bay Golf Clubs over the three days of competition, winning by three strokes over Englishman Stephen Jensen at two-under-par.
The leading 160 players and ties pegged it up at Hastings Golf Club for Saturday’s final round, chasing the overnight leader Glenn Coughlan, a four-handicapper from Templeton Golf Club, who led at two-under.

A fresh name will be etched onto the New Zealand Men’s Seniors Championship trophy, with six-time champion Brent Paterson absent from this year’s event in Hawke’s Bay.
The four-time defending champion will not tee it up at Hawke’s Bay and Hastings Golf Clubs on February 8 - 10 as he is attending his son’s wedding. Paterson’s name has dominated the trophy in recent years following victories in 2013, 2017, and 2020 through 2023, and his absence leaves a huge opportunity for the 30 internationals and Kiwi favourites to write their names in New Zealand seniors golfing history.

Kyle Maihi and Te Rongopai Clay won their third Maori national titles at the New Zealand Maori Nationals yesterday, with Maihi earning his place in the New Zealand Open field again and Clay winning the stroke play and match play double.
Poneke hosted the 86th staging of the popular Maori event, with over 300 golfers vying to be Maori national champions in their respective divisions held at Shandon and Te Marua Golf Clubs. The Men's Interprovincial team have again finished 3rd at the National IP event held across the Paraparaumu Beach and Waikanae courses, a repeat of last years semi final result against Auckland, a narrow 2 - 3 loss, as Auckland powered their way onto the title, beating the 2022 champions BOP in the final.

Golf New Zealand has named strong New Zealand men’s and women’s senior sides to take on Australia for the Tran-Tasman Trophy in Taupo next year.
