Am I Allowed to Sell Plants?

Here's a rundown on basic plant nursery regulations for selling plants. To be fair, it's too broad a topic to cover completely, and there are some more general business topics (taxes, payroll) that I couldn't get into here. But if you're looking for the basics of starting your own backyard plant nursery or plant selling business, I'm happy to field any questions. Time for Fall Garden Cleanup?
Fraser Valley Rose Farm
by Fraser Valley Rose Farm

Is it time to prune back your perennials, clean up dropped leaves and put your garden to bed for the winter? There's a good case to be made that a "relaxed" attitude is warranted towards spent flowers, stems and foliage. It's an approach that can save time and effort, supports the health of most plants, and benefits wildlife too! There are a few exceptions, though, where you might consider some fall pruning or cleanup. Rose Care in October
Fraser Valley Rose Farm
by Fraser Valley Rose Farm

Let's go through the year month-by-month and discuss the tasks and topics relating to rose care in the garden. This is the first in a 1 year series to complete a full cycle of rose growing: activities, feeding/soil, watering, propagation, pests and the plants themselves. The timing of these activities in the series will follow my own PNW climate (coastal northern temperate climate, similar to Seattle), but I'll also be delving into the reasons *why* these steps make sense, so that viewers can adapt the approach to their own climate. Don't Let Them Bloom: Disbudding Young Roses
Fraser Valley Rose Farm
by Fraser Valley Rose Farm

A common strategy with young plants (and not just roses) is to pinch growing tips and young flowers to encourage branching - and focus the plant on healthy new growth. Here I'll demonstrate some of the common reasons this can make sense - and discuss whether it's also a good practice for the home gardener. Plant Theft: Dug Right from the Garden!
Fraser Valley Rose Farm
by Fraser Valley Rose Farm

Who would be so low as to steal plants from another gardener? Sadly, it happens, and in the case that I'll discuss in this video, it was a (relatively) rare rose dug from a public garden. Seemed like a good time and excuse for me to do something about our on-farm security. Reolink sent us a couple of wireless 4K cameras and the home hub so that I can access everything though the app on my phone. I'll also mention that it's super easy to repurpose the cameras for sharp time-lapse videos. Win win. Mower Dumps Its Own Clippings!: Mammotion Yuka 2-in-1 Robot Mower and Leaf Sweeper

Earlier this year I reviewed the Luba 2 mower from Mammotion, but when I saw one with a sweeper/bagging attachment that actually empties itself, I had to try it out. Meet the Yuka robot mower, also from Mammotion. It shares many of the same intelligent features of its cousin: wireless GPS/RTK navigation, 3d vision and obstacle avoidance & beautiful straight lines while mowing! While it doesn't feature all-wheel drive capabilities, it does boast the cool factor of the optional sweeping/bagging attachment. You can use in conjunction with the mowing to sweep up the grass clippings, or on its ..read more

Hard Summer Pruning Roses for Condition
Fraser Valley Rose Farm
by Fraser Valley Rose Farm

In this vid I'll explain and demonstrate remedial pruning in summer: pruning to improve the condition of an existing shrub when it's showing signs of stress or disease. Often I'll do my "major" prune in spring, but for some shrub roses (and ramblers, like this first one) I'll leave it fairly large for a more impressive display. In the example(s) shown here, the shrub began to show signs of stress after the spring bloom. No worries, a later prune (when justified by condition & circumstance) is just fine. It also gives me a chance to look for problems lower down on the stems or at the crown ..read more
