I have been reading a lot of posts and information on area sites about chinchillas. The information states that they can have a life span of 18+yrs. In reading posts from chin owners, I have not read anywhere when anyone has a chin older than 5 yrs! Is it common for them to only live a few years in captivity? I am already becoming concerned for the life of my 5 month old chin! Could members please send me posts of how old their chins are so you can relieve my concern? Thanks ..read more

Two times in the past, our oldest chinchilla, Bunny (5yrs old), has had injuries to her front legs. One time we thought it was an injury caused by her cagemate, and the next time we thought she had gotten her foot caught in the cage somewhere and tried to chew off her leg. Both times, the areas of the wound were clear of fur and her leg, chest, and shoulder had been chewed. We brought her to the vet both times and she was given oral antibiotics and a topical salve. Once again we have... Chinchilla biting leg ..read more

My chinchilla got a hair ring, I brought him to the vet when I found it. His area was dark, and wasn't going back into his sheath. He's on antibiotics and I've used lubricant to get it back into the sheath, but it isn't going back into his body. Is this normal? Is he OK? What can I do to help him more ..read more

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice on treating a Chinchilla with ringworm. He started losing fur around his nose a few days ago. I took him to the vet today. I was given Tresaderm and was told to put it on the affected area twice daily. I was reading about other Chinchilla owners' experiences who said that the Tresaderm did not help and the ringworm just got worse. Has anyone had any success using this treatment? I've seen a lot of online posts about mixing Tinactin with the... help my chinchilla ..read more

I have two chins about a 1 1/2 years old. One of them, the runt of the litter, keeps having these weird stroke-like convulsions. Where he cringes his body and sometimes it looks like one side of his body is paralyzed. Sometimes it looks like he's twisting in a weird way. His ears lay completely flat to his head And afterward he is really shaken and scared. He tries to run/walk it off and has trouble moving about because part of his little body won't work. Usually this happens after we give... Help!!! My Chin keeps having seizures ..read more
