I don't post much as I love to read the good information (mostly) that you all put out there! here's the situation: I cut the floor deck out of my J16 because I suspected water in the foam- and boy am I glad I did. I removed 400 pounds of soaked foam (from the transom to about 3/4 of the way to the bow). ripped it all out- cleaned it-... After many years of dreaming and procrastinating, finally bought the moulds. It's designed for rowing (or small outboard) boat. One measures at 9ft, another 10ft. I was expecting to get some information about building process, but got very little from late owners wife. She told me, that her husband was using 2 layers of 600g fiberglass, some parts 3 layers. What I would greatly appreciate, is the whole laminating schedule for that boat, and materials needed. Anyone would be willing to... Starting rowing boat building business ..read more

Hi Like i've said in another thread, i'm new here. I was looking for any information available or does anyone knows Flare Boats? I was kind of bored and started to look for a project boat. I found this boat and bought it to make it a real one, just got here from Florida. I took everything out. The hull is in really good shape except for the floor wich had a couple of soft spots. I've cut the floor out, and found some rotten wood because the previous owner didnt seal the holes on the floor... Flare Boats ..read more

Hi, I have a good female mold I can use to make a 19 feet long hull (mono-hull). This mold is normally used to make fiberglass and polyester resin only hulls. To make it stronger and durable I want to make it in epoxy and fiberglass only. Believe it or not I can’t find any resources to help me doing it this way! I can find only resources about how to build with polyester or wood covered with epoxy and fiberglass. Any help is therefore much appreciated on this project. The boat must be... Hello. So i've been searching around the internet and stumbled upon this small scale boatbuilding company that uses temporary female moulds made from fiberboard, as said in the blog of the owner-they are suitable for at least 2 hulls made without any severe problems, but because it was a blog -there was no info on the process of making whatsoever, so the question is-where can i read about it? ... Hello! I am new to the forum. I am an avid BWCA canoeist and have started construction of a male canoe plug this winter. This plus is constructed of plywood bulkheads with foam stringers. That was then sanded and a single layer of 6oz fiberglass epoxyed over. I am now doing body work on the plug and getting it very straight and to a high quality finish. My intention is to create a multi part female mold from this plug. I then plan to lay up multiple Kevlar canoes from this mold. I know the... Female Canoe Mold Questions ..read more

Is this worth fixing?

I’m looking at this pirogue for a very low price. It looks like whoever owned it prior drilled 3 rather large holes in the bottom roughly 2 inches in diameter to either hang it as a display piece or another purpose. The pirogue is fiberglass and I’ve never worked with it. Any insight on a way to patch the holes or if it’s even worth the trouble would be appreciated. Im currently trying to upload a photo ..read more

Epoxy fade

Hi all, I used a carbon tape to join the deck with the hull of a kayak (see attached picture) with epoxy measured very carefully. I add a little bit of Silica in the first (bottom) layer then added the tape and then more epoxy on top of it. After 3 days I took the kayak out in the water for a test as this is a prototype. Once I return after a few hours I noticed that nearly the whole tape/seam took a fade/grey color, I don't know how to describe it properly but you can see in the picture.... Epoxy fade ..read more

So here is my question, I am building a houseboat, it's not really going to go anywhere, it a timber frame, ie osb3 and a timber frame. And then I will coat it in fibreglass. So the first question is shall I use chopped strand mat in sheets to coat it or twill? Next question is if you suggested CSM then should I go with 300, 450, or 600 grammes per square metre? And how many layers do you think it might take to get a decent hull? I think that covers it, Ciao ..read more
