Dear Sailheads, I’d like to sail (motor) the Rhine-Danube Canal. Can anyone give me the lowdown on captain and vessel licensing requirements? Surely they don’t allow just anyone who shows up at the mouths of these rivers to motor right on in. Thanks in advance, Ootr ..read more

For the schengen visa program, I am reading that you can only stay 90 days within a period of 180 days. I may be getting confused with Turkish rules that I read on noonsite. What I am wondering is does the clock start at your first schengen port or if you leave port and cruise on the sea for a passage of several days you can deduct those days from your 90 day limit ..read more

The new EU Schengan Touring Visa In mid 2015 the EU is looking at approving new Visa laws. Its time now to look at the proposed provisions carefully and if you have an interest make representations to ensure the laws are passed. If the law is passed it will not come into effect for 6 further months. It may mean your EU trips timing is important. The new EU Schengan Touring Visa will be very good IF its approved. But we will still be in a mess... because you can't do a Atlantic to Med... New EU Schengan Visa ..read more

3 years ago I sailed my OVNI 445 in Norway. Below are two anchorages which I really liked : - Hydra : 58°13.894N 6°32.109 E : small village on an island, the entrance is gorgeous - Valoyene : 58°20.361N 8°40.760E : a marvelous group of rocky islands, you anchor in the middle of this lagoon. Picnic on Valoyene with a fire at night ..read more

Best anchorage in my view around the Baie de Quiberon and Golfe du Morbihan : - Ile d'Houat : Grande plage. 47°23.145N 2°56.638W. In front of the most beautiful beach of south brittany. Quite popular though. Well sheltered from N-W-SW winds. - Hoedic Grand Mulon : Nice beach. Well sheltered from W-SW winds. 47°20.278N 2°51.581W. Visit the island and small village. Gorgeous. - Ile aux Moines : Grand plage. In front f the main beach from Ile aux Moines. A charming island with beautiful... Anchorage Baie de Quiberon ..read more

Scotland : Crinan Canal

We did this short piece of canal with my OVNI 445. This is a very narrow canal with 12 locks. Very romantic sceneries. You need to operate the locks manually (i.e. you need to push and pull the gates with your arms !) so better have a strong crew, or if you are traveling in couple, you should wait for another boat to do only half of the job. It takes a day to cross. I recommend this fun experience ..read more
