Hi..  Help please.  I have 9 Neps and the other 8 are doing grand on my bathroom window sill.. This young Hookeriana however seems to be struggling and I have significant browning of leaves throughout etc.  I have today taken it out of the soil it came in from the supplier and which to me seems quite boggy and dense. I have repotted into 50 / 50 sphag moss and perlite.  Views / suggestions appreciated.  Please note the white spots are from the perlite re potting stage.  Thank you. Not a great pic.  ..read more

He is kind of laughing, isn't he?! Or she, for this plant, again, came without a name tag, just a dutch producer's tag. Its still a toddler, hairy pitcher lids and all, but the strap like, reddish-brown leaves, tapering slowly into the tendril, let me think it could be a fairly common hybrid like 'Rebecca Soper'.  Growing fast, the next pitchers not only will be laughing at our fine summer temps but hopefully reveal the real identity of this plant. If it was RS, I'd have two dark pitchered Nepenthes. Time to get a green or yellow one ..read more

Recessed brown patches on one side of my ventricosa x hamata; is this sunburn or something more serious?

Hi all, I was away for a couple of days and I found that my ventricosa x hamata developed these brown patches on several leaves on one side. Now, while I was away, it was in a bright spot that gets maybe an hour of direct sunlight per day. However, it was rainy and cloudy when I left, but I returned to full sunny days so I guess it may have played a role. Anyway, I can live with it, but I would like to be sure that there isn't something more concerning going on so here are the photos: https://i.imgur.com/S5K5j5W.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3Tl0Bip.jpg ..read more

Amazing observations in N. reinwardtiana and N. pervillei

Nepenthes reinwardtiana: Sexy Eyes (English subtitles provided) We investigate the function of the prominent eyespots of Nepenthes reinwardtiana, a pitcher plant common in Borneo and Sumatra. The spots obviously have different physical characteristics than the surrounding, very smooth and fluorescent tissue inside the pitchers. In contrast to this water-repellent (hydrophobic) surface, the hydrophilic eyespots effectively accumulate small water droplets suspended in the air during fog or heavy rain. As a result, steadily growing water droplets form there, eventually hanging over the edge of th ..read more

Too humid for bicals? Condensation on leaves

I’ve got a few small bicals in a temporary lowland terrarium to quarantine away from my other plants. Temps stay above 26.5 all the time and go up to about 30 so the plants themselves are thriving and adjusting well. Humidity in the terrarium is currently sitting at a more or less constant 93% (they were used to 85%+ before I received them). My only concern is that I’m getting condensation building up on the plants themselves and I’ve never had this occur before. I know bicals love swampy warm conditions so I just wanted to get some advice if this will damage the plants long term (and I should ..read more

Nepenthes pitcher problem

Hello, I have owned a N. X Ventrata for around 6ish months but not once has it pitchered for me, for a while I sprayed it around 4 times daily however recently I purchased a humidifier. I recently repotted it into sphagnum and orchid bark 2 : 1 so it is going through a bit of shock. one theory I have for the lack of new pitcher is that when I was on holiday the person looking after it mistakenly cut off all of the lowest biggest pitcher embryos. If there is any way I could induce pitchers fast I would love to know. thanks in advance ..read more
