Ruger Old Army - serial number puzzle

Hi all. I am new to this forum, thanks for adding me. I have a question about Ruger Old Army serial numbers, and would appreciate any help or feedback. In 1993 I bought a brand new in box Ruger Old Army in stainless, which I still have. Although a very fun revolver to shoot, I only managed to fire through it some 3-400 balls before work and family commitments forced me to put the shooting hobby on the shelf (or more correctly in the safe ). I am now so fortunate to be able to pick up... Ruger Old Army - serial number puzzle ..read more

Hello all, I had an Old Army 35 years ago and always missed that pistol. I just picked up another used and found that it seems to have a bit of a timing problem. I first noticed that with the hammer resting in the full-cocked position there was quite a bit of cylinder wobble. I've found that if I manually hold the hammer all the way back at full travel, where the pawl/hand is at the top of it's travel, the cylinder is then locked as rigidly as I expect (with the cylinder latch holding the... ROA ... is it 44 cal or 45 cal?

A recent thread about Ruger Old Army revolvers peaked my curiosity so I watched three different videos on YouTube and found the "alleged experts" didn't know what they were talking about on a few things and passed on erroneous information. Going back prior to the turn of the century (1890's), bore diameters were measured by the largest diameter rod you could insert in a bore. When the Small Arms and Ammunition Institute (SAAMI) was formed in 1926, they used the same measurement technique... ROA ... is it 44 cal or 45 cal ..read more

My brother came across this Jukar .45 tower pistol. He is not a shooter so I had the pleasure of seeing how this one works. The target at 15 yards shows the first seven shots. Yes there are six holes. Number seven must not have come down yet ..read more

When you see smoke come out through the trigger?

Shooting a .32 at the range and Inoticed smoke coming from out of the trigger assembly. They "locked up" and that was the end of shooting that rifle that day. Cleaning the gun I didn't notice anything unusual, and since I was out of state I was going to wait until I returned home to check the gun out. Fast forward to today. The "Drum" apparently had been drill too deeply. The backfire from the bore traveled down into the stock behind the side-plate and gummed up all the works. I... It's arts and crafts time ? I found these pine craft boxes at a Micheals for cheap, and stained them with Minwax. They're flimsy and can't be banged around, but they make cost effective little period looking organizers for caps, balls and wads for the range The boxes fit inside the large box and both of them fit in an Indian made leather bag I got off FleaBay, along with a flask for... Before shooting the Ruger Old Army at the range, should I lubricate the bore?

I was just watching this interesting YouTube video on quick cleaning: My question here - at 15:45 into the video, he shows how he lubricates the bore of his gun with "Bore Butter". When I first get to the range with a previously cleaned Old Army, should I run a patch down the bore with a little "Bore Butter" on it? Or, maybe just do this as the final step in cleaning at home? Regarding the video, I know it really doesn't apply to me - he's just doing... Before shooting the Ruger Old Army at the range, should I lubricate the bore ..read more

Ruger Old Army, trying to use it like a Bullseye Pistol - Dry Firing

I used to be reasonably active here, and with the help of a good friend at my range, I eventually got reasonably good at shooting my stainless 6" Old Army. The biggest problem I had was the stock grips were so tiny I had trouble holding the gun still. A new friend of mine from Altamont had a set made for his own Old Army, and you can see them in the above photo. Helped my accuracy tremendously. The question I'd like to ask here today is "dry firing"... Ruger Old Army, trying to use it like a Bullseye Pistol - Dry Firing ..read more

I will be at deer camp for two days next week prior to the opening of general gun season. Primitive weapons season is open as of Saturday. I took my old muzzleloader out shooting today. I was testing two loads today in my .45cal CVA. What I thought it was zeroed with was the old Great Plains 285gr HP over 80gr of Pyrodex. Nope. Couldn't hit a gallon jug at 100yds to save my life. Next up was a 200gr XTP in a sabot over 90gr of Pyrodex. Those were all over the 100yd target. ? I waited too... Frustration ..read more

Shooting a pair of Pietta .36 brassers

Luckily, I decided to bring these to the range at the last minute, because my Uberti Navy I've had for 15 years had a broken hand spring .....apparently it broke when I put it at half cock today, having worked fine the last time I had it out . Oh well, mechanical objects fail, it's life. These 2 "Schneider and Glassicks" that I antiqued always do the job. I admit that I use them as range beaters and don't really clean them that well , and instead... Shooting a pair of Pietta .36 brassers ..read more
