Seattle Gdynia Sister City Association is looking for host families for the students from Gdynia who will be coming to Seattle to participate in the 2024 Washington Business Week. The students will arrive on July 27/28 and depart on August 11. Between August 4th and 9th they will be full time at UPC, where the program takes place. Hosting students from Gdynia, Poland is a great way to participate in citizens’ diplomacy, and a great way to develop long lasting friendships. Aniela Sidorska’s “Porcelain War” Wins at SIFF

The movie “Porcelain War” has won the Best Documentary and the Golden Space Needle awards at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival. Sidorska was the principal producer and the creative force behind the movie; she is also a member of the Polish community in Seattle. The film received the US Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and Best Documentary and People’s Choice Awards at the 2024 Boulder International Film Festival. The awards give the winner the right to enter the 2025 Oscar competition. Wendy Rader-Konofalski has several exciting art events coming up! This week she will be installing one large ocean scene painting called “Paradise” at the Caffe Ladro in Seattle’s 2 + U (at Second Avenue and University St).  This Caffe Ladro is across the street from the Seattle Art Museum. “Paradise” will be there till July 12th, 2024. Also, this month, starting April 30, Wendy will be showing a large number of paintings and collage work at the Creekside Senior Living Residence in Woodinville. The Kosciuszko Foundation is currently accepting applications for 2024 Summer Studies Abroad Program. The Kosciuszko Foundation offers Tomaszkiewicz-Florio and Wisconsin Study Polish Scholarships for students who wish to study Polish at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow or the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin. Ronald “Roman” Golubiec, a pillar of our Polish community, died on January 24, 2024 in Seattle of old age, he was 91. Romuald Golubiec was born in Riga, Latvia on July 27, 1932.  His father was arrested and taken away by the Soviets.  His mother later remarried to the Polish Consul, Boleslaw Golubiec.  After the Soviet Union invaded the Baltic countries in 1940 his stepfather was also arrested and sent to Siberia but managed to return to Latvia after the war. Kazimierz Poznanski, a well-known UW professor of economics, has died on March 26, 2024. He was almost 78 years old. Kazimierz Z. Poznanski was born in Germany in 1946, brought up in Poland, he came to the United States in 1980 at the invitation of the Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs at Princeton University. The Seattle Polish Film Festival welcomes back Dr. Michal Friedrich, one of the SPFF founders, as the Executive Director, who takes over from Zbigniew Konofalski, who was the Managing Director of the 2023 festival.
