Friendships become more complex when girls hit middle school. It can be difficult to establish new friendships or to create lasting ones. There are a TON of friendship shifts, and girl drama ramps up.
Having worked with teen girls for over 30 years, I know how important friendships are for girls. When they can’t find good, trusting friendships, it can cause issues with confidence, self-esteem, anxiety, and overall mental health.
With the right relationship skills, though, your daughter can have wonderful friendships that lift her up and enrich her life.

Imagine that it’s a month into summer and you have a spurt of energy. You decide to do some major cleaning. That’s when you see it. Your son’s backpack that wasn’t cleaned out at the end of the school year. You aren’t sure what you’ll find, so you slowly open the zipper and hold your breath. It’s like the jump scare moment in a horror film. There are a ton of crumpled papers, stinky socks, and something moldy that is unidentifiable. The stench is unbearable. Rather than cleaning it out, you zip it back up and toss it into the garage.
Just like your son’s backpack, you have your ..read more

HOW TO BOLSTER SELF-ESTEEM SELF-MASTERY
In a healthy adult/child relationship, the child’s self-esteem is bolstered by interactions and encouragement from the adults in their lives. However, beginning in the 1970s and fully blooming in the 1990s, society began to go overboard with praise (Yes, that is possible!) and began creating a false sense of self-esteem. A skit on Saturday Night Live by Stuart Smalley summed the movement up, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
What is self-esteem and why is it so important? In a nutshel ..read more

ARE YOU SPEAKING THEIR LANGUAGE?
Like many parents, you might be worried that you are losing your connection to your teen. You try to connect in a variety of ways, and it seems to fall flat. You take them for Boba. Try to give them a hug. Ask to play a board game. Nothing changes. Sadly, you might feel like giving up after a while, especially when your efforts to connect are continually “rejected” by your teen.
If you are feeling discouraged or if you worry about the disconnection, it might be time to learn how to speak your teen’s love language.
According to Gary Chapman, there are 5 love lan ..read more

It’s the not knowing that creates that knot inside your stomach. When you ask your daughter how she’s doing, she answers with “fine”. She seems distant, cold, quiet. When you look in her eyes, you can see that she just isn’t herself.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF SHE’S OK?
You can’t force your daughter to tell you what’s going on, or to open up, or to let it all out. There is no magic word to open up the lines of communication. It is important, though, to not give up and let it go. The parental SPIDEY SENSE is strong and very accurate.
