In a recent study by University of Michigan and other institutions, including Washington University in St. Louis and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, identified distinct biomarkers that could help to identify and diagnose unique subtypes of renal cell carcinoma. The study, published May 3 in Cell Reports Medicine, was headed by Alexey Nesvizhskii, professor of bioinformatics and pathology, and focused on identifying a rarer category of the cancer to help to develop more specific treatments in the future.  Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately nine out of 10 cases of ..read more

The report, shared with City Council in February, assessed the potential ben ..read more

The Michigan Daily

In March, Jazz Parks, interim superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools, announced that there would be a $25-million budget deficit projected for 2024. Last month, the Board of Education voted to approve a plan that would save $20.4 million through large cuts to staff, music programs and elementary-level specials classes. This vote came after several hours of public commentary from teachers, parents and students, who addressed the board, asking them to reject this plan. Several factors contributed to the budget shortage, including $14 million in state support from last year’s budget that was ..read more

Electronic dust and museums: My crush on physical photos
The Michigan Daily
by Joshua Nicholson

In Netflix’s 2017 “Kodachrome,” an ode to the end of Kodak’s film stock of the same name, fictional photojournalist Ben Ryder (Ed Harris) makes an apocryphal observation. “People are taking more pictures now than ever before,” the character muses. “Billions of ‘em. But, there’s no slides, no prints. They’re just data, electronic dust. Years from now, when they dig us up, there won’t be any pictures to find. No record of who we were, how we lived.” Ryder, inspired by Steve McCurry — the photographer of “Afghan Girl” — was, in some ways, a swan song to a philosophy of permanence, a time when a ..read more

I kind of don’t hate my hometown anymore
The Michigan Daily
by Anna McLean

If you had asked me at any point before approximately two weeks ago what I thought of my hometown, I would have given you a 10-minute spiel on how I would never return to that god-forsaken place. But, as I stood in my driveway at 3 a.m. two Tuesdays ago amidst the brisk, 60-degree air and smelt the faint scent of lawn fertilizer and oak trees, crying over a Dollar General that hadn’t been there over winter break, I would tell you that my answer has changed.  If you had asked me a month ago to tell you about my experience growing up in Spring Lake, Michigan, a sleepy town not even five mi ..read more

Everyone and their mother are crushing on Chappell Roan this summer. With celebrity endorsements ranging from the past month to 10 years ago — including Elton John, RuPaul and Troye Sivan — she is truly your favorite artist’s favorite artist.  Although I’d been scrolling past buzz about Roan for months, I didn’t hop on the bandwagon until I came across a clip of her Tiny Desk Concert while lounging around one weekend this past March. Soft afternoon light filtered through my window as I scrolled on my phone and encountered the post. “You have 50 seconds to live,” it read, captioning a vid ..read more

A love letter to my 2002 Honda CR-V
The Michigan Daily
by Paige Wilson
2d ago
I’ve cried over plenty of different things since I was 16. Long forgotten fights with friends, bad test scores and high school dances gone wrong have all left mascara streaming down my cheeks. Not to mention all the happy tears I’ve shed for college acceptance letters and from laughing too hard in the Walmart parking lot. But for four years, the location of my tears has remained the same: the driver’s seat of my 22-year-old Honda CR-V. She’s been practically on her deathbed since she first came into my possession, but I like to believe I’ve been willing her to keep on living just for me. I ha ..read more
