Hernias are most commonly located in the groin or umbilical region. However, hernias may occur in any location in the abdomen. Many patients self-diagnose their hernias.

Pain or discomfort in the area of the bulge.
Limited ability to perform strenuous tasks.
When you feel these symptoms, you should contact your doctor. The doctor will perform a physical exam to determine if a hernia is present. The exam is usually performed in a standing position. The patient is aske ..read more

Yes, it is possible to avoid hernia treatment in certain cases. I do not recommend surgery for all hernias. You are probably surprised to hear that not all general surgeons recommend surgery for every hernia that they diagnose. However, before deciding not to have hernia surgery, you are better off first consulting a general surgeon; this is a decision that you should not make on your own.
Examples of hernias that may not need surgery include hernias that can be observed, such as umbilical hernias that have been present since birth and are not painful and have not increased in size. In some i ..read more

Sports hernias are not actual hernias but a painful dysfunction involving the groin, also known as the inguinal region or the region of the upper inner thigh. The initial treatment for all sports hernias is non-surgical. The non-surgical treatment consists of rest, cold packs, and anti-inflammatory non-steroidals. Once the pain has dissipated the “sports hernia” is often resolved. Now the athlete can resume the sport.
Professional athletes are more inclined to undergo sports hernia surgery to resolve their hernia than recreational athletes. On the other hand, non-professional athletes, common ..read more

A sports hernia is the result of repetitive twisting and turning. This injury occurs in the groin. Athletes who perform these motions at high speed are especially at risk. These hernias are common among soccer, hockey, and tennis players. Overuse of the groin muscles results in stress on the inguinal wall, which is located low on the pelvis. Muscles, nerves, and tendons may be injured even though there is no hernia. The injury can be quite painful. The pain persists as long as the athlete continues to participate in the sport. Likewise, the hernia symptoms are known to diminish during the off ..read more
