LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Local leaders have wanted to construct a juvenile detention facility in Tippecanoe County for years, and on Monday, the Tippecanoe County Commissioners approved its development. The juvenile detention center will either be a 15,665- or 20,103-square-foot facility near the county’s Cary Home for Children facility located at 1530 S. 18th St. in Lafayette. The overdoses were concentrated downtown before spreading across the city. Officials in Austin, Texas, are investigating an “outbreak” of deadly drug overdoses spreading across the city. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) and the Austin Police Department (APD) said they received a total of 51 calls for suspected overdoses as of Tuesday afternoon, with four suspected deaths related to the surge, according to local ABC News affiliate KVUE. The Marion County Juvenile Detention Center is located right in the middle of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. It saw more kids admitted in 2023 compared to 2022 according to the Marion County Probation Department. Chief Probation Officer, Christine M. Kerl said last year they saw mostly teens between the ages 15-17 with an average stay of about 22 days.
