Davy Fitzgerald is set to receive a four week ban for an incident with referee Liam Gordon at the end of Waterford’s loss to Clare in the Munster senior hurling championship a fortnight ago. Waterford lost the game by one point and Fitzgerald encroached onto the field to have words with the Galway referee after the final whistle. A controversial and crucial 65 was awarded to Clare in the game’s last play – it was later revealed as the correct call – and many felt this was the managers’ bone of contention but he has in the mean-time stated that it wasn’t. Fitzgerald told the Irish Times that hi ..read more

The victorious Kilkenny and Mayo minor captains didn’t make speeches at the weekend. The GAA have reminded the various county boards of the rule that inter-county minor teams are not to have captain speeches after games. Croke Park issued a note to provincial councils recently to bring to their attention a longstanding policy relating to U-18 players, according to the Irish Independent. The policy was first brought into play in 2010 by the GAA’s National Awards and Presentation Committee – chaired at the time by current Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Jarlath Burns – but having not been enfor ..read more

Brought to you by oneills.com Local rivals Tipperary and Offaly will meet in next Saturday’s oneills.com U20 GAA All-Ireland hurling championship final. It’s a repeat of the 2022 minor decider, with many of the same players involved, when Tipperary’s Paddy McCormack broke Offaly hearts with the last puck of the game. Nowlan Park is again the venue as the neighbouring counties face off with the aim of becoming All-Ireland champions. Tipperary qualified for the final thanks to the heroics of their star forward Darragh McCarthy, with the Toomevara ace denying Cork with a late winner that was as s ..read more

Donegal were sensational in their 0-21 to 0-14 win over Tyrone in the first round of the All-Ireland senior football championship on Saturday evening. Peadar Mogan was the star-of-the-show, kicking three from play in a swashbuckling showing from wing back but it was a team effort. Oisin Gallen, Jason McGee and Ryan McHugh also showed well for Jim McGuinness’ side, who continued their winning run on the back of their recent Ulster championship triumph. There was a huge Donegal support in Ballybofey on Saturday as the upbeat mood regarding the county’s footballers continued. Interestingly, rathe ..read more

Joe Brolly was disgusted by Gareth McKinless’s sending off against Galway Former RTÉ pundit Joe Brolly says he ‘can only apologise on behalf of the Derry GAA community’ after Gareth McKinless was dismissed for a ‘shocking’ stamp on Galway’s Damien Comer in yesterday’s All Ireland Football Championship fixture. McKinless left a sneaky stamp on the ankle of Comer moments after fouling the Galway forward in the 21st minute. Following a consultation with the linesman, Mickey Harte’s men were reduced to fourteen men and the disadvantage showed as they went on to lose 2-14 to 0-15. It was the second ..read more

Crowd at Leinster semi-final shows Offaly U20s are one of GAA’s best supported teams

The Offaly supporters are certainly fully behind this team. Offaly hurling supporters have endured something of a famine over the last twenty years. They’ve been starved of success. The Faithful county experienced many glorious days in the 80s and 90s when, spearheaded by the likes of Brian Whelahan, John Troy, Pat Fleury and the Coughlans, they won four All-Irelands. The last of those came in 1998 and while Offaly made it to another final in 2000, their status slipped badly over the next two decades. But the wheel is turning in their favour again. Having made it to the All-Ireland minor final ..read more

As the start of the All-Ireland senior football championships coincides with the Tailteann Cup and the business-end of the provincial hurling championships – throw in the Joe McDonagh and the All-Ireland U20 football final for good measure – it won’t get any more wall-to-wall than this.
