As it's name suggests, a microvia is just a very small version of a typical via, but the structure is a bit different. Microvias have conical frustum shape; the via slopes inwards as it makes a layer transition and terminates at a pad in the next layer. Ideally, microvias will only span a single layer for maximum reliability.
