The Replacements

In 2015 I built a pair of speakers for the daughter of some best friends while she was attending Amherst. The speakers I built for her were small 2-ways built around the Dayton ND105-4 neo woofers and finished with a mix of white and black Duretex that came out as a bluish gray. Small two ways. She absolutely loved them and claimed she had the best sounding speakers in the dorm. Fast forward and she's got her PHD and she and her boyfriend can work remotely and they plan to travel for an extended period of time. She puts everything she owns in storage except for her speakers because she doesn ..read more

Another post about impedance jigs

It is often mentioned that you can build a DIY impedance jig for $5 to $15 and there is a good "sticky" thread over at Parts Express Tech Talk. However, I have noticed there and on some other forums that beginners, if they try to build the jig, don't have problems building the jig but rather run into problems making the correct cabling connections. After @4thtry thoroughly documented his build a dual-channel jig I thought I would take the plunge. To better understand how the jigs worked I made a few different versions. I have documented in elementary terms, step by step, how to build a DIY imp ..read more

A comparison of some measurement mics and pre-amps

I don't think there is much new or interesting to those who have been around awhile, but I did a little study comparing some mics and pre-amps. Partly for my own interest but also for those beginners who are thinking about getting measurement gear for the first time or maybe upgrading their measurement gear. (Dual channel only, no USB mics) Its quite long (although mostly pictures) so here is the bottom line: (1) A cheap mic is fine for crossover work as long as you have a good calibration file. But ensuring you have a good calibration file either requires decent money or getting a mic from so ..read more

Is pretty good but needs some PEQ help above 10KHz to sound flat and crisp - Doubt it is useful with passive XO's but DSP/PEQ can bring this guy into competition with the Fountek Neo 3.5H ..read more

I'm not finding a member list, but I've been a lurker here and PETT for years. I know there is a guy near Minneapolis who goes by ANI???? who has been around for longer. I've got a proposal for some free stuff for him if he can pick it up in the south metro. I'll not get too into here before I hear from him. He comes across as a solid guy and I'd like to give him first crack. If you are him or can hit him up for me, I'd like start a conversation. This is a running out of time situation. Thanks ..read more

I have four Infinity 8" woofers, as some of you know, and I need to refoam 3 of them and one has a loose voice coil. The dust caps are concave and are polygraphite. Is there a way to get these off so I can line up the voice coil without destroying them? What glue should I use? Where do I find the shims ..read more

Cheap, simple, line level A/B switch box (2in, 4out)

In searching the web, I found several DIY style A/B switch boxes for loudspeakers, but none for line level preamp or power amp switching. Some use relays and remote controls. Others use a couple of DPDT switches and banana jacks. For my project, I decided to go with two DPDT switches and a bunch of cheap RCA jacks. Total cost: ~$30. The problem is this: When trying to compare the sound of two preamps (or power amps), the differences are very subtle. It is therefore extremely important, at least for me, to be able to switch back and forth quickly before my brain forgets what the other preamp so ..read more
