Hey folks, So, I'm playing around with the G4 MDD. I'm coming across some odd little problems- 1) After getting the PSU back from repair and installing it in the G4, I booted it up once or twice-then didn't touch it for a week. When I booted the G4 up later, I got a blank screen. After doing some reading, I hit the PMU reset button on the motherboard. That worked..but then after shut-down I would get a blank screen after booting up once more and after shutting down I hit the PMU reset... Read more ..read more

Testing a Color Classic Analogue Board with no LB

Hi all, I am working on a CC in need of attention. Unfortunately it's been stored improperly. The good news is that the LB is not too bad. Usual leaky caps which haven't caused too much damage. The battery is intact. Now, there is capacitor leakage on the AB so I'm planning to fix that first. However, I'd love to test that power supply without the Logic Board. I see two scenarios online 1. The CC will NOT power up the PSU without the logic board as the "power on" pin must... Read more ..read more

PowerBook 3400 siren song

I recently got a PowerBook 3400 that would chime, then chirp and make some pretty crazy siren type sounds. The sound would go away and the screen would light up if I disconnected the hard drive. I assumed not enough power was getting to the HDD, so recapped the DC-board and MLB (just three caps) but it made no difference. I installed another hard drive and it booted just fine. I then gave the original drive a good whack on a desk and reinstalled it. It then booted just fine. So something... Read more ..read more

Hey folks, So, I need to get a USB card for my G4 MDD. But given the age of this machine-should I look on eBay for used cards, or can I get a new card that might be outfitted with USB 3.0 but settle for the slower speeds? Or is the plug-in slot on the G4's motherboard only meant for older PCI cards ..read more

Color Classic input voltage question

Hi everyone! This is my first post here. While I am still very new, I hope I'll be able to grow into a somewhat useful part of the community over time! I have a question regarding the input voltage of a Color Classic. As far as I can tell, these units were all (normally) multi-voltage, supporting 90-240v. This is mentioned on EveryMac and Apple's own documentation, as well as what's written on the bottom of the Color Classic I acquired just yesterday. For a bit of background:... Read more ..read more

TAM - Fatback - Printable copy & FatterBack maximum expansion Mod of baseline model?

From the pics I have on hand, in terms of size the two(?) parts seem easy enough to be printed? Repro FatBack would seem to be in some demand I'd think, many are missing and unavailable in the wild? FatterBack version would bow the curve of the hump out a bit - providing more overhead for my proposed TwinSlot Riser and depth for two PCI backplane panels, one full height, one possibly low profile? - housing for a large exhaust fan or two smaller fans would be... TAM - Internal PicoPSU - AUX Power for Expansion Slots

I've identified available cubic in the TAM for boosting its anemic power budget in the upper right hand corner of the red box: A PicoPSU will fit nicely mounted vertically to edge of the ComSlot2 standard riser with hot glue or socketed on a custom repro riser. Power supplied to the rails of a SATA Connector are a question mark, maybe, maybe not able to drive two PCI Cards off the cable? ATX connector may be required as source for slots? PicoPSU in... For those that are unaware, the TD Game server is run on a Dell R520 - as shown here: https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/tinkerdifferent-game-server-now-testing.2909/ In modern terms, it's ancient, was destined for the e-waste until i rescued it. I mean, who'd want a 10-core, 20 thread machine, it's SOOO old, right? Since then, thanks to @Bolle it's been upgraded to 192GB of RAM and i've replaced the battery in the H710 PERC RAID card and added a few more trays ready for 6x... Read more ..read more

ChatGPT-4o Mac fail

ChatGPT-4o is pretty impressive at identifying stuff from photos. So I threw it this: and asked "identify this computer". it confidently replied: This is an Apple Macintosh IIci, a personal computer introduced by Apple Computer in September 1989. It features a 25 MHz Motorola 68030 processor, 1 to 8 MB of RAM (expandable to 128 MB with later third-party upgrades), and typically came with a hard drive, as seen in the image (a Quantum hard drive in this case). The power supply... Click to expand... Read more ..read more
