Reply To: Fundamental questions in plant science that synthetic biology can address

This is a key and difficult question, a question without a binding answer because synthetic biology emphasizes the use of mathematical modeling techniques to predict the behavior of the system and optimize its operation. Creating mathematical models describing the designed system allows you to predict its features, but only in theory. Unfortunately, as the complexity of the system increases, the computational complexity of the simulation and the degree of unpredictability of the system’s behavior increase dramatically ..read more

Very good words about a very important topic. I have personally experienced genuine gender discrimination many times. This may seem funny, after all, I am a white male from Europe. Unfortunately, in my country, but also throughout the European Union, the issue of women in science is excessively raised, which is of course extremely important, but it often leads to open discrimination against men, I have heard many times that there is no place for me in the team despite the high substantive assessment of me because places are for women, preferably for women from outside Poland/Europe. Sad but tr ..read more

Hello everyone! I wrote this note on discrimination in Academia. While I was writting it I learnt so much about sociology, stress, discrimination. Have you read it? What do you guys think about inclusion inAcademia? https://plantae.org/navigating-the-labyrinth-of-discrimination-a-call-for-inclusion-in-academia/ plantae.org Navigating the Labyrinth of Discrimination: A Call for Inclusion in Academia | Plantae Discrimination is not a new topic, we hear it on the news, we see it on social media, we have -hopefully- talked about it with our peers in conferences or during lunch. It might sound ..read more

Dr. Muhammad Awais Farooq completed his PhD at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan with a research focus on abiotic stress tolerance, particularly salt stress. He furthered his expertise during a research fellowship at Michigan State University, USA, where he contributed to genome annotation and the functional characterization of genes associated with salt stress tolerance. Subsequently, he engaged in a project at the Agricultural University of Hebei, China, “Transposable Elements: The saviours of Brassica genome ensuing interspecific genomic collision”. At UNIBO, he specialize ..read more

Can’t go to ASPB 24 (or even if you are)? Want to still present your research?

Who here would like to see the posters or talks from from Plant Biology 24 in Hawaii? If you are going and presenting your data would you be willing to record your talk or upload a pdf of your poster in a discussion thread here on Plantae? Or, even if you like to have gone but couldn’t, would you like to still present your work here as either a talk or a poster? Just wondering what sort of enthusiasm for a grass roots move to get meeting content on line ..read more

The Botany in Action Fellowship program at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens fosters the development of the next generation of plant-based scientists who are committed, first, to excellent research, and second, to educational outreach. Open to PhD students enrolled at US graduate institutions and conducting plant-based scientific research, the program provides each fellow with: 1) $6,000 for use towards research-related expenses at sites in the US or abroad*, 2) an all-expenses paid trip to Phipps, to engage in science outreach training and opportunities to translate and communicate th ..read more

Soil disaster

Hi, On throwing some water into my monstera plants today there was an awful stinking smell in the whole room. Lifted the plastic inner pot up from the ceramic outer pot, it was sitting in a few inches of brown water which was absolutely stinking like rotten eggs I took the whole plant out and the soil was completely wet and heavy. The roots were coming out the bottom of the pot a bit, it probably needed repotting anyway. I genuinely don’t water the plant often, every 2-3 weeks if I remember? seems completely healthy otherwise. It’s 1.5m tall with large holey leaves and more coming. Do you thin ..read more

For the manuscripts I contributed to recently, we have not received easy-to-spot-on AI-generated review reports. However, when I reviewed manuscripts and read the review report from other reviewers, I have encountered several times of AI-generated reports. One time it was so obvious that it even had a remark of “generated by ChatGPT” embeded in the texts, likely due to the use of ChatGPT through a third-party application. In all these cases, the comments were very general and vague, with no clear actions suggested. For example, if I ask chatGPT to write a review report for a “plant biology man ..read more

Successful peer review happens because of the scientists who consistently step up, share their expertise, provide constructive comments, and help to ensure the integrity of plant science research in Plant Physiology, The Plant Cell, and Plant Direct. Sending a huge THANK YOU to those who are part of the ASPB peer review community! How can journals show appreciation for highly engaged and responsive peer reviewers? Share your response here to be included in a future blog post or article! This discussion was modified 17 hours, 11 minutes ago by  Sarah Black. Reason: added tag ..read more
