Size of box for Hubbell HBL9450A 14-50 receptacle?

I have a client that is adamant about having a Hubbell receptacle installed for EV use using 6 gauge copper. From the mounting plate the Hubbell plug has a depth of just a bit over 1-3/4" inch and a plate diameter of 2.5 inches. It's a beast of a device. A stove box will not work with 6 gauge copper. What are my options without a stove box extension which I think will look horrendous ..read more

Any FL electricians out there? I am trying to figure out how to get back into the biz & do some side jobs. 1995-2000 I was active duty AF and worked as an electrician. Logged 8000 hours thru the Dept of Labor & received a Completion of Apprenticeship. Since then, I have done various side jobs but have mostly worked a corporate job. All I read online is that I need an Electrical Contractors license (6 years) & that a journeyman can’t start a business in FL, can’t pull a permit or even... Florida license ..read more

Something I hate about some clamp-meters

I have a bunch of clamp-meters. One of them is a Klein CL800 as shown below: This clamp-meter has a huge (for me) advantage over some other clamp-meters like this Extech that I also own: The answer is not, actually, the little bracket to hold a probe for easier two-handed operation (though I like that). The answer is have OFF at the BOTTOM of the wheel. Every time I try to turn this Extech off I switch it into... Something I hate about some clamp-meters ..read more

Cutting the ears off of regular outlets against drywall
Electrician Talk

I hired a guy from NY. He says he has always cut the ears off of the outlets. He says for 13 years he has done this. He said he has wired high rises in NYC and said he has always done that. My first thought was that this dude is crazy. Then I tell him he's violating the workman like manner code and the UL Listing codes. Can you think of any thing else? Or do you also break the ears off? He's done it like that so long I'm having difficulty convincing him that he's always been doing it... Cutting the ears off of regular outlets against drywall ..read more

Surge protectors (Canada)

So I was tought as an apprentice these are basically a scam. NEC adopting them doesn't necessarily change this, as we know how much afci protection was lobbied for, not always for the benefit of the end user. Recently I had a home owner ask me about them and I had to just tell them that I wasn't up to date on the information and had no opinion. Got me thinking it's time to revisit. I also have a new Eaton panel after 3 years of avoiding looking at my old fed pioneer **** box. So that means... Surge protectors (Canada ..read more
