you all were so helpful on the train decision. We have decided to take the train directly from Quebec City after disembarking from the ship on a Friday, spend at least Saturday and Sunday in Montreal and are debating whether to leave Monday morning or leave Tuesday. What area would be central for our stay In Montreal and since our flight is early, thinking we should move to a hotel at the airport for one night. Any ideas? Thanks in advance ..read more

Driving VT to Montreal, what's in between?

Doing a driving trip from western Mass, western Vermont, to Montreal, probably Sept or early October. We have been to the VT/NY border and across Grand Island, North and South Hero and Isle LaMotte and will do that again. But what's immediately across the CA border to do or see? On my map is Saint Jean sur Richilieu, also Lake Saint-Louis, and Saint-Catherine, worth a stop, a stay on our way to Montreal? If it's scenic, we'd go slowly, otherwise the fastest. And yes, it's an American rental, going back to the US. Cross posting on the Vermont and NY forums - thank you all so much ..read more

Hi Fodor’s Yesterday, it looked like today would be free for most of the day so I made a last minute decision to hop on a train and head somewhere. I’d not been to Saint Hyacinthe before, a city with a population of around 60,000 on the Montreal-Quebec City VIA Rail route and it made sense as a day trip, taking the 8:45 am train in the morning and returning on the 3:15pm. It’s only a 45 minute ride from the Gare Centrale. The train station in Saint Hyacinthe is quite central and my first impression was quite positive with a pleasant park right by the stone ivy-clad city hall with lovely tuli ..read more

My husband and I will be is Quebec City in early June and then will travel to Montreal. We do not want to have a car in either city, but are deciding whether to rent a car for a day and drive or take the train. Is there any where that we would want to stop or see along the drive? What would our best option for a car rental be and what would it approximately cost? Thanks in advance ..read more

Hello, I'm hoping to spend a few days in Halifax early July (flying in and out) I love nature, walking, scenery, wildlife, but would also stuff unique to the local area, especially food. Looking for advice on whether to stay in the town, whether I would need a car, is a few days enough for that area? Suggestions for what to visit. I'm on a budget, but not wanting to miss out on stuff as I'll probably never go there again! Many thanks, Helen ..read more

Hi, we are looking for advice on June 2024 road trip thru the Charlevoix and Gaspe peninsula areas of Quebec, focusing on hiking, scenery, cute small towns, and maybe whale-watching. We are traveling as a couple and would welcome any advice (activities, lodging, etc.) on the rough game plan outlined below, and we’d also welcome thoughts on whether early June makes sense for this trip. We have been to Montreal and Quebec City, which are lovely, so our focus is elsewhere this trip. We are looking at travel the second week in June and we have two main questions: (1) are hiking trails in the Char ..read more
