On this and every anniversary of 911, I think of how we never know and how we all need to prep for the unknown. So many evacuating down the stairs would have loved to have a flashlight. I always keep a small one in my purse. Small things such as this are taken for granted until needed ..read more

Big Al here, aka Rice Paddy Daddy, aka Ricepaddydaddy. I heard about this forum merging with Homesteading & Country Living and I wanted to meet our new neighbors. I've been doing this forum thing since before Y2K when i joined Frugal Squirrels. I'm 75, wife is 77, and we have a small farm with a horse, 40 or so chickens, four dogs. I'm an old soldier, spent a year in Vietnam with the US Army ..read more

Hardening your home against attack

Our house is somewhat large at around 5k square foot. The problem is the number of windows. They're everywhere on the bottom as well as the second story and we dont have a room that would give you views front and back. On the plus side it's all brick construction. Our first thoughts are protecting our resources which would be the main goal. Other than boarding up all the lower windows we're kind of at a loss on how to go about it. There's the nail boards just inside the windows but... Read more ..read more

Even though I already have my Amateur Radio License, I still wanted something that I could give to friends or a trusted neighbor in the event of an emergency. This video is about the TIDRADIO TD-H5 GMRS Radio Overview and Programming. The TIDRADIO TD-H5 is a GMRS that comes preprogramed with 54 simplex and repeater channels. It also works on the FRS channels. GMRS does require a license from the FCC. however, there is no required test. You just fill out a form, pay your $70, at the time of... Read more ..read more

Looking for Communications Radio for Emergency

I am looking for information on 2way radios for my family to use in case the world goes totally 'south'. If our cell towers go down, I need to find something that I can communicate with my family. We are about 20 miles apart over flat terrain although there there many forests between us. Of course, should we have to 'bug out', I also need them to be hand helds. Will ham work? Will ham repeaters remain up even in a disaster? Are there other/better alternatives? I had one person suggest... Read more ..read more

ALCON, It's been a while since I dropped by, since I deleted my FB account and couldn't figure out how to get back into the forums. Well, I figured it out. I'm still around. Anyhow, now I can talk about GMRS for a little while. Bad news first: You need a license to operate on GMRS frequencies. Well, legally, that is. Good news: There's no test for you to take like with ham licenses. You simply pay your way in. If you've seen some of my other posts, I've been... Read more ..read more

What Ham Radio To Get?
Doomsday Prepper Forum

Hoping someone can guide me in this prepper question: I am looking for good communications in the event we lose our standard way of communicating such as an 'end of the world' scenario. In case we get hit with an EMP strike, or a massive solar flare, or a rogue government takeover and all cell phones, the internet, land lines, everything gets taken down, how can I ensure I know what is going on in the world and whom to align with (other than those I've already aligned with)? I have a... Read more ..read more
