Best romantic films

What are your favourite romantic films? I love great films about love but I also find a lot of mainstream romcoms unwatchable, so I would love to discover new films to fall in love with. Some of my favourites: Summer’s Tale by Eric Rohmer - possibly the most perfect film about being young and smart and shy and feeling very confused about all the possible love options. Weirdly, I can identify with a male protagonist, perhaps his character is really kind of universal, he’s ridiculously charming and attractive but deep inside he’s a confused young human trying to navigate a very confusing world ..read more

I just watched "Kinds of Kindness"

My review won't have any spoilers. It was three different stories so I'll give three different grades instead of one universal grade for the movie. The first story gets a 5/5. It was interesting, dark, funny, the performances were great, the themes were very clear and it didn't need to be longer or shorter. It lives up to "Dogtooth" and "The Lobster" which are my two favourite Lanthimos and Filippou films. The second story gets a 3/5. It was fun but I don't get what happened at the end. This one needed a bit more expanding. But overall it was still fun. I had similar feelings about "The Killi ..read more

The First Clerks (1994) Truly Gets Better With Age

I just re-watched Clerks since the first time since my teens. I didn't have the same connection with Kevin Smiths work like a lot of people (especially the Gen X teens and twenty somethings who were there during his prime) as I mainly likes his films for his crude humor and pop culture references in my teen years. However, upon re-watching the movie for the first time in years surprisingly in the era where nerd culture and Clerks style of humor is prevalent in Hollywood sludge, Clerks still feels fresh. Its a story that directionless teens and twenty somethings of any generation can relate to ..read more

The Turin Horse - A Beautiful Apocalyptic Premonition

I'm glad my first tango with Bela's work went well. The Turin Horse is so incredibly gorgeous in its visual aesthetic, that it's hard to square with the ugliness of what's actually happening. What I admire about how this film was directed is that it avoids pity, avoids forceful social commentary. What we see on screen: it just is. But what if something is terribly wrong with just is? Should this be accepetable as a way of life. What I find striking about the timelessness feeling of this movie is that it's not far fetched to believe people are living exactly like this now, as if they're walkin ..read more

Who are your favorite detective characters in film?

My top 3 are: Detective Loki played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie Prisoners. I love how raw his character is. Straight to the point, no bullshit, highly competent. I love how professional he is when dealing with family of the victims; he is very graceful in how he approaches a delicate conversation and tries his best not to insult them when they are distressed, but he is also ready to put his foot down and ask tough questions or calm them down when need be. There's just something about his mannerism in general that I love. How he can laugh along when someone bullshits him and then gives a ..read more

In his documentary, Brian DePalma says that he uses a lot of Hitchockian visuals because Hitchcock invented a visual language and nobody took advantage of it. What other directors do you think have a specific visual language that could be reused?

My answer to this is Sam Raimi. Every time I see a Sam Raimi film, I am blown away by the sheer creativity of his transitions, his angles, his zooms and the just the sheer commitment of making a film that, in every shot, seems to ask "How can I make a scene people have seen before look more interesting?" I still think about that shot of Ash waking up in the puddle and the camera does that insane pull out with all the spins. I don't know how they did it, I almost don't want to know, it was magic. BTW I also understand that that kind of shot choice needs to be somewhat motivated. Raimi isn't ju ..read more

In Gladiator (2000) how did the Praetorian Guard reach Maximus’s family before him?

Rewatching it now for the 100th time, this always bothered me. They maybe had a 12 hour head start assuming they dispatched the order to have his family killed. But he b-lined it to them with two horses, on his own so technically he should have traveled MUCH faster than a group of Praetorians. They probably wouldn’t have known he escaped so they wouldn’t have traveled with nearly the same urgency as Maximus, there would be no reason to. The only plausible theory I can muster is that the Romans had their own version of the pony express. Otherwise I just don’t see how they could have reached hi ..read more

What would you call the area of film I'm interested in?

I'm kind of an amateur when it comes to all of this, so I apologize in advance. I'm interested in studying film, mostly for fun, but I'm also considering pursuing a minor in it (depending on the type of classes offered at my school). I enjoy analyzing the lighting they choose to use in certain scenes and the different ways they shoot the scene (like the camera angles and "filters" and stuff). I also love thinking about the colours used on the set background and props. And, of course, the clothing and makeup choices are probably my favourite parts. So, pretty much everything else that goes int ..read more
