Imported beef is to blame for a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 50 people, according to Danish officials. Since March, 51 people in Denmark have been infected with the same type of Salmonella, said the Statens Serum Institut (SSI). The Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak has sickened 31 men and 20 women. Patients are between the ages of less than 1 year old to 83 years old with a median age of 37. They live throughout the country. 18 people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been recorded. A Salmonella outbreak in Denmark has now affected 40 people with ground meat suspected as the source. In less than a month, at least 40 people have been infected with the same type of Salmonella, said the Statens Serum Institut (SSI). It was previously reported that 12 people were sick in the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak. Twenty people have fallen sick, and five have died in a Listeria outbreak linked to fish that has been ongoing since 2019. Most cases have been recorded in Denmark, but there are two in Italy and one in Germany. Sliced smoked salmon products are the likely source of infection. The latest illness was reported in March 2024 in Denmark. The German patient fell sick in 2022, and the Italian patients in 2023. A dozen people have fallen sick in recent weeks in a Salmonella outbreak in Denmark. During March and April, 12 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported, said the Statens Serum Institut (SSI). People were infected with the same type of Salmonella. According to the Danish food agency, there is still uncertainty among chefs and kitchen workers about the management of norovirus. A Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) control and guidance campaign targeted restaurants, kitchens, and shops that supply ready-to-eat (RTE) food. Scientists have provided information about the types of Salmonella and people infected by the pathogen over a decade in Denmark. They identified 9,944 Salmonella cases from 2013 to 2022. Results were published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.  The leading non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) serotypes were Salmonella Enteritidis, monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium, and Salmonella Typhimurium. Researchers in Denmark have shared lessons learned as part of work on national burden of disease estimates. The Danish burden of foodborne disease study ranks pathogens and chemicals.
