I'm trying to transplant waterlilies into planting baskets so they don't take over my pond again but it's my first time using pond potting soil. I had to line the basket because particles were still going through the holes. (Is plastic burlap from feed sacks safe for this? ) After it wad submerged a day or so I noticed what looks like punk slime at the top...is that normal ..read more

Hi, I bought a tropical water lily which I am keeping in a large tub in the heated garage with a big grow light. It is growing well but starting to look tattered, it really needs to get in the pond. But I've never grown tropical water lilies, I know they like warmer temps than hardy obviously. What is a good temp to place the lily out in my pond? I'm in the southern coast of BC Canada, my temps dropped this week to highs of 62 during the day and lows in the high 40's. The pond water temp... Read more ..read more

Regarding water lily fertilizer, I have always used pond tabs which work well but are a bit pricey. I just planted a new yellow lily in an automotive oil drainage pan, sitting on 3 concrete building blocks. I've stopped worrying about the sludge on the bottom and I have two lilies growing in the bottom sludge, and if they do well, this seems a more natural way of planting. The fish fertilize the lilies. I also have a "small animal" electric wire around the pond to keep out those... Read more ..read more

Care to weigh in on cutting back during pond cleaning?

Hey, all! I'm going to do a spring cleaning on my pond today. I haven't done anything with it in about four years. I'm not a proponent of frequent pond cleaning but I really do need to do something this year. There is so much settled mulm on every surface, you can't see any rocks or anything. The question is: should I cut back all the plants really low, to make the cleaning process easier? And will they all come back up as the weather warms? The bacopa is coming back, but there is a... So…my pond does not have soil in the bottom and I can’t put soil in because the lilies have to come out in winter and be overwintered in my cold room. They are in pots. Using Aquascape Pond Medium and it has gotten crazy expensive this year and am wondering if anyone has ideas for me. Thanks ..read more

I would like to try some ferns either in the bog or pondside. Any recommendations? I have some that grow naturally here that I could try, but I also have some Cinnamon Ferns that I would like to try and I can't seem to find any info about how they might work. Thanks for any advice ..read more

I have a couple of cala lillies I planted in the bog last November. One of them appears to have good roots, the other one, eh, I don't know. Is it still too early for these to regrow? In zone 9b. Maybe I need to be more patient? Another canna just restarted, and the elephant ears are slowing coming back to life. CG ..read more

The bounty of bog plants so far this year

The first couple of years I allowed water above the gravel in the bog and had so much string algae that I could barely see the gravel, so this year the water is just below the surface (sorry frogs). I've been pleased to see how many plants have survived the winter - this was the first for the carnivorous plants and all seem happy. I have 3 types of pitchers, a sundew and a flytrap planted in peat. In the gravel I have 2 iris' with their first buds, one elephant ear, White Ginger, Luna swirl... Read more ..read more
