What ‘Shipwrecks’ can tell us about the world
Boston Herald
by Ellen Atkins

David Gibbins’ “A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks” is also a history of the world in 270 pages, which is why, as you might imagine, the book is jam-packed with information — and why, as Gibbins explains, it is not the history, but a history. What Gibbins, a maritime archaeologist who has explored some of these shipwrecks, is trying to convey is “the immediacy with the past that wreck evidence can provide.” The 1992 discovery of a boat in Dover leads to reflections on seafaring, woodworking, trade, agriculture and technology in Bronze Age England — along with descriptions of the scien ..read more

Silverglate: Colleges must educate, not indoctrinate
Boston Herald
by Harvey Silverglate

The Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana might have been describing the current turmoil on our college campuses when he famously opined: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” College administrators have forgotten past decades when political turmoil reigned. Consider the decade of the 1960s and the Vietnam War. But it is insufficient to assess that national academic trauma without noting one reason why Vietnam-era campuses were roiling with protests: Faculty members, it was believed (and not without reason) were, to one degree or another, consultants to the D ..read more

‘Unsung Hero’ more like band merch than biopic
Boston Herald

Cinematic memoir can be a complex creative endeavor. Film is a collaborative medium, and memoir requires a certain acknowledgement of the author’s creation. Without that self-reflection, memoir can slip into murky, confusing territory. This space is where the new film “Unsung Hero” exists, which is billed as “A For King + Country Film.” If you’re not yet aware of the Grammy winning Christian pop duo For King + Country, comprised of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, “Unsung Hero” will introduce you to their folksy family lore, if not their musical successes. The film is a biographical drama abo ..read more

Boston’s Whale Jam concert blends great work, great tunes
Boston Herald

Coastal New England has so many seasons: Nor’easter season, boat season, cranberry season, foliage season and of course, whale season. With our impressive population of whales – including the annual pod of right whales – returning and whaling tours operating again, it’s the all about the cetacean. This year, Boston has a great way to celebrate them, thanks to the folks at Nantucket Crisps (nantucketcrisps.com). Whale Jam, a May 16 concert at Roadrunner in Boston (roadrunnerboston.com), brings together top musicians to perform in support of WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (us.whales.org) ba ..read more

Editorial: DC elites should try living on an average wage

When was the last time Joe Biden bought a loaf of bread? The president has people for that, and the wherewithal to cover the cost of even the most artisanal of brioches. Considering his long career in politics — nearly 50 years as senator, vice president and now president — the days where Biden had to work out a family budget are long past him. For Biden, and members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, the Beltway is a cocoon of privilege unknown to most Americans. DC pols get most of their health coverage paid for, make six-figure salaries, and the longer they’re in office, remain far rem ..read more

Dear Abby: My boyfriend is 18 years younger than I am. Our relationship hasn’t been perfect, but I love him to death. Unfortunately, I’m going through menopause and have all the side effects. Long story short, he found another girl. It was just supposed to be for sex, and he told me he wouldn’t get into another relationship or marry anyone but me. Well, he fell for her, which I warned him he was going to do. They are both at my apartment. I’m trying to make him happy by allowing this, but he can be so mean to me, and he’s so nice to her. He tells me how nice she is, etc. I told him it’s becaus ..read more

Patriots still looking to add offensive ‘weapons,’ O-line help
Boston Herald
by Doug Kyed
7h ago
FOXBORO — With the quarterback pick out of the way, now the Patriots need to build around third overall pick Drake Maye. And they can do that with their remaining picks in the 2024 NFL Draft by staying put, trading up or down or even dealing for veteran players. “I just think we need to support him in any way we can, on the field, off the field,” Wolf said. “We need to add some weapons to the offense. We need to shore up the offensive line. We have good players already at those positions but really just increasing the depth and the competition. Like Jerod mentioned, that competition is going t ..read more
