Warmington Names Abortion Rights Her ‘Day One’ Issue At Filing
NH Journal – Politics

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cinde Warmington told reporters that her “day one” policy actions would be to advance the cause of “reproductive freedom,” a common euphemism for abortion. She made the comments as she formally filed her candidacy paperwork with the  secretary of state Wednesday. The only Democrat on the Executive Council, Warmington has made abortion the central issue of her campaign for governor. Her first TV ad featured her attacking Gov. Chris Sununu over the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade and returning the abortion issue to the voters. After l ..read more

Sununu: NH Is in Play for Trump, GOP in 2024
NH Journal – Politics
by Michael Graham

Outgoing Gov. Chris Sununu doesn’t buy the theory that Donald Trump’s candidacy is a lost cause in New Hampshire or that he’ll drag down the GOP down-ballot. And as evidence, he points to Democrats themselves. “If you look at the polls, Trump could win here,” Sununu told NHJournal on Wednesday. “It’s effectively tied in the polls, and that hasn’t happened in a long, long time. And I think what that says is people are looking at their situation today, and if they want to change, they’re going to vote for change. They won’t just stick with party.” That might also explain U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas ..read more

NH Journal – Politics

Former Executive Councilor Colin Van Ostern may be racking up endorsements within the Granite State’s Democratic establishment, but his primary opponent in the race to succeed outgoing U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster is bringing in some political heavyweights of her own. Former Biden administration official Maggie Goodlander showed up at the secretary of state’s office in Concord on Wednesday to formally file her campaign paperwork flanked by a group of supporters that included former Democratic U.S. Rep Dick Swett, former U.S. Ambassador Terry Shumaker, and Dr. Susan Lynch, wife of popular former Demo ..read more

POINT: Trump Prosecutions Should Be a Wake-Up Call to Conservatives
NH Journal – Politics
by Alex Xenos

For an alternative viewpoint, see Counterpoint: Trump’s Hush-Money Conviction Was Justice in Action. If prosecutors can bring unjust cases against a presidential candidate, they can do it to anyone. For years, a contradiction has existed in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. Conservatives have based their political philosophy and rhetoric on limiting and rolling back government power. They talk a big game when it comes to fighting tyranny. Still, there is perhaps no greater example of tyranny than the unjust use of prosecutorial power.  Yet, conservatives have refused to ..read more

COUNTERPOINT: Trump’s Hush-Money Conviction Was Justice In Action
NH Journal – Politics

For an alternative view, see Point: Trump Prosecutions Should Be a Wake-Up Call to Conservatives.   I have 40 years’ experience as an attorney, during which I represented criminal defendants in scores of successful trials, and I can say with absolute certainty, having closely followed Donald Trump’s hush money trial, that it was more than fair to the defendant. DA Bragg, contrary to Trump’s lie, did not campaign on prosecuting Trump. Bragg had already been the Assistant New York Attorney General in the case that had successfully dissolved the Trump Foundation for collecting donations for ..read more

Activist Who Won $2.1M in Boston Flag Flap Warns Nashua: Get Ready to Pay Up
NH Journal – Politics
by Michael Graham

When conservative activist Hal Shurtleff got the idea of flying the Christian flag, with its white banner and red cross on a blue field, at Boston City Hall in 2017, he couldn’t imagine the controversy that would follow. After all, Boston had approved the previous 284 applications to fly celebratory banners on that same spot. Five years, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruling (and millions of taxpayer dollars) later, Shurtleff and his Camp Constitution organization finally unfurled their banner in Boston on August 3, 2022. And now Shurtleff has a message for Nashua taxpayers: Be prepared to pay ..read more

Kuster Founded Pro-Women Candidate PAC, But Backs Straight, White Male Van Ostern for Congress
NH Journal – Politics

At a rally for Hillary Clinton in Manchester during the 2016 First in the Nation primary, Madeleine Albright called out Granite State women who were supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for the Democratic nomination. “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!” Albright said. U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster apparently missed that event. When the Second Congressional District Democrat announced her retirement, Kuster promptly threw her support to Colin Van Ostern, the only straight, white male in the 2024 Democratic field running for federal or statewide office. “I’m proud to ..read more

ANUZIS: Investigation Into Oil and Gas ‘Price Gouging’ Is Political Nonsense
NH Journal – Politics
by Saul Anuzis

Americans are facing a consumer confidence crisis as costs continue to climb and inflation crushes peoples’ pocketbooks. The 2024 inflation rate is still high at 3.4 percent, above pre-pandemic averages. And with federal officials making clear they plan to keep rates high and President Biden insisting he has already “turned around” the economy, it’s no wonder people are left scratching their heads. Americans with fixed incomes are particularly susceptible to economic dips, with inflation and costs at the top of their minds. However, the security of our economic future and c ..read more

Edelblut Critics Silent After Teacher Abortion Report
NH Journal – Politics
by Damien Fisher

Accused by media outlets of interfering in classrooms and spreading misinformation, New Hampshire Department of Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut’s public records release is silencing critics. For now. The cache of documents Edelblut recently made public includes the investigative report on a New Hampshire public school teacher who brought a student to an abortion clinic during school hours — and without notifying the girl’s family. The veracity of the abortion incident was questioned in The Boston Globe soon after Edelblut first made mention of it in an April op-ed.  “Was that accusa ..read more

Libertarians Gather to Protest Nashua’s Pine Tree Flag Ban
NH Journal – Politics
by Evan Lips

It’s a battle flag once again, and a group of Granite State libertarians brought the fight to Nashua City Hall Monday. The Pine Tree Flag, sometimes called the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, flew over the Battle of Bunker Hill as Gen. George Washington and American revolutionaries faced the British outside Boston. But when that flag was the subject of a citizens’ fly request, it was rejected by Gate City Mayor Jim Donchess. As a result, Donchess’ rejection may have brought more attention to First Amendment constitutional rights than he bargained for. On Monday, a group organized by the Libertarian P ..read more
